Marrakesh is the fourth largest city in the Kingdom of Morocco. It is the capital of the Moroccan region of Marrakech-Asfi. Marrakesh grew rapidly and established itself as a cultural, religious, and trading center for the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa. Today it is one of the busiest cities in Africa and serves as a major economic centre and tourist destination.
The most iconic landmark of Marrakech if not the whole of Morocco. A beautifully constructed mosque just off the jma el fna square. In the evenings, it has a nice buzz on the grounds outside the mosque with plenty of locals and small children sitting and just enjoying the vibe. Definitely a place to visit just to absorb the atmosphere.
Its a mosque, one of the most important in MarrakechIts an old but very interesting church for daily praiers.
Food is good, only it took a bit long to wait for some food
So clean And its safe u can walk safly
One of the oldest mosques in Marrakesh. It has an interior with arches throughout. During covid all ablution areas are closed and mosques are mostly empty.
Lovely old mosque, inside is amazing and one gets so much peace and lovely feeling.
You should visit koutoubia at least 1 time in your life
Considering it’s cultural and historic significance, it would be nice for a tour to be offered to explore the interior of this marvellous building. Nevertheless, it’s exterior is still impressive. I really enjoyed hanging around the square toward sunset as the locals pour onto the street and vendors set up shop
It is a nice mosque, but you cannot visit it, only look from the outside
A very beautiful Mosque and monument in Marrakech, you can get lots of unique insta and memory pics. It is literally a minute walk from the square.Watch out for the beggars, they are harmless but content.
Five times a day, one voice rises above the din of Djemaa El Fna as the muezzin calls the faithful to prayer from the Koutoubia Mosque. The mosques minaret has been standing guard over the old city since the Almohads erected it in the 12th century. Today its Marrakeshs most famous landmark. The tower is a monumental cheat sheet of Moorish ornament: scalloped keystone arches, jagged merlon crenelations and mathematically pleasing proportions.Koutoubia Mosque architectureThey say imitation is the greatest compliment, and the 12th-century 250ft-high minaret has quite the reputation as an architectural muse. It’s the prototype for the Giralda in Seville, Spain, and Le Tour Hassan in Rabat, the capital of Morocco. Unlike Middle Eastern mosques, which have domed minarets, the Koutoubias square design is an Amazigh trademark.
Mosque from 12 sentry by almorvid dynasty. The mosque is a twin with lajiralda in Spain and Hassan in Rabat
The Koutoubia mosque is amazing piece of architecture, it is simple yet elegant. The mosque is surrounded by big gardens which are a great place to get away from the scorching sun. The inside of the mosque is also amazing. Pity that like most mosques in Morocco this mosque is also not open for the tourists and one has to be a Muslim to enter it.Despite this it is a must visit to see it from out and sit in the garden.
Pretty incredible pictures can be taken here, for example I think I did a pretty good job. (These were taken first thing in the morning).Tips:1. It is very close to Jama Fanaa so you should try to merge both things together and do on the same day2. I don’t think you can pray here. Some people might think it’s possible to pray, I don’t think so3. There are large gardens surrounding this, so you can spend time around it
Beautiful mosque with lovely interior. I was amazed to see so many people sleeping there, because inside the mosque weather was much cooler than outside. To my surprise, there were no fans or air conditioning inside the mosque, it was all cool because of architecture of the mosque. I really enjoyed my visit to the mosque, there a nice park beside the mosque and its right in the city centre.
The place is mind-blowing from the distance and even so as you get more close to it.You cant get to the inside but can see it from the outside. If you want you can even cross the street and have a nice walk at the park and seat at a bench and enjoy the view. Its even better when the sun is going down.
The Koutoubia Mosque is considered one of the most important mosques in Morocco. It has exceptional large dimensions, it occupies an area of 5300 square meters and consists of 17 wings and 11 domes decorated with reliefs. In it, the majestic decisions of the sultans were announced and major events took place. The mosque and its minaret, decorated in its upper parts with a ceramic frieze painted in turquoise, became a symbol of the city. As for the great Koutoubia platform, it is equipped with an automatic movement system that is considered one of the masterpieces of Islamic carpentry. This pulpit was made in Córdoba at the beginning of the twelfth century at the request of the Almoravid prince Ali ibn Yusuf ibn Tashfin for the mosque that he finished building in Marrakech. Transferring the pulpit to the Koutoubia around the year 1150 ADThe mosque has an ancient history from the era of Fint civilizations, and it remains a witness to its history. The first Koutoubia Mosque was built by Caliph Abd al-Mumin ibn Ali al-Kumi in the year 1147 CE on the ruins of Al-Hajar Al-Marabati Palace, whose buildings and architectural components were revealed by archaeological excavations. As for the second mosque, it was built in the year 1158 AD, and it is similar in size to the first building, and is organized in a rectangular prayer hall with seventeen porticos directed perpendicular to the qibla, carried by symmetrical columns and arches and unique capitals reminiscent of those we find in the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque in Fez. The confluence of the Qibla portico with its five domes and the axial portico is a design faithful to the characteristics of the Almohad religious architecture that had a great influence in the various parts of the Islamic West. The owner of the al-Muashiyyah, in mentioning the Marrakesh news, says: “Abd al-Mumin built another mosque in Dar al-Hajar, in which he gathered Friday prayers, and proceeded to build the Jama Masjid, and demolished the mosque that was below the city that Ali bin Yusef built
Beautiful mosque mashallah... lovely place to visit
The best second things in marrakech
As always, best place to sit down and enjoy your view
The Koutoubia Mosque (Arabic: جامع الكتبية) is the largest mosque in Marrakesh, Morocco. Its beautiful from inside and outside. A must visit place in old city of Marrakesh (Madina). The atmosphere is so peaceful at day or night.Nearby park is pretty and the old market (souq) is close-by.Highly recommended place to visit.
A beautiful area of the city and plenty of places to sit in the park near the fountain.
I like the view and the architecture of this historical mosque next Jamaa El Fna place
The Menara Gardens in Marrakech is one of the most amazing natural attractions in Marrakech and one of the distinctive gardens in the Moroccan Kingdom, and it enjoys stunning green spaces and wonderful water bodies, and it is located near the green Atlas Mountains. The establishment of the Manara Gardens in Marrakesh dates back to the twelfth century during the era of the Almohad state, when King Abd al-Mumin al-Mouhdi ordered their establishment to be a place to train soldiers to swim, and a place for residents to benefit as orchards for agricultureToday, parks become one of the biggest tourist attractions in Morocco, which constitute a natural outlet for tourists and locals away from the citys heat and bustling weather. The lighthouse gardens in Marrakech include groves planted with olive trees and palm trees, orchards of fruit trees, green plant gardens and beautiful colorful flowers, and in the center of it is a huge lake with a circumference of about 510 meters, fed by water from sub-rivers flowing from the Atlas Mountains, and connected to irrigation channels for orchards and gardens. The gardens also include an old heritage house in the Andalusian style, you can enter it and climb to the top and watch a very wonderful panoramic view of the garden with its orchards and its lake, and in winter you can see the charming white Atlas Mountains covered with snowThe Menara Gardens in Marrakech are located 3 km from the old city wall of Marrakesh, its wonderful historical and architectural monuments and its distinctive tourist places, and near it there are many restaurants
Koutoubia Mosque is the largest mosque in Marrakech, Morocco. The mosque is also known by several other names, such as Jami ‘al-Kutubiyah, the Kotoubia Mosque, the Kutubiya Mosque, the Kutubiyyin Mosque and the Booksellers’ Mosque. It is located in the district of the south-west medina of Marrakech.
Unfortunately only able to view this magnificent building from outside. Beautiful example of Arabic architecture that had influence on Moorish architecture of southern Spain.
Perfect place i love it ❤️🥰
One of the oldest (built in 1199) religious buildings to be visited in Marrakesh. Nice original athmospere inside. The munarah is extraordinary one and astonishing with its size and architectural state. Its a must to see for all tourists.
Nice ancient place...Middle of the city
Perfect landmark for directions in Marrakech and nice to walk around!
Beautiful architecture, I would recommend you visit here if youre in Marrakesh. Good vibe all around, lots of tourist taking pictures, families sitting around just enjoying themselves. Inside the Mosque is beautiful
Beautiful mosque in the centre of all the hustle & bustle. We were there during Fridays prayer time and it gets packed with hundreds of people for prayers. We were unable to go to the top of the minarat since the access was closed off but a peaceful place to pray, relax and reflect on life.
Very big masjid. An open space with a large water facility at the back, centre of the masjid is provided to preform ablution.
Beautiful building, the tower is lit at night and can be seen from the Medina. As a non Muslim I could not visit inside the Mosque but the surrounding gardens are free to visit and open permanently with a mixture of planting, promenades and squares with seating and fountains. A peaceful little haven if you feel the need to take a rest from the hustle and bustle of the Medina. The call to prayer is announced from this Mosque and can be heard throughout the Medina.
Great place
A mosque of majestic grandeur, its minaret is the emblem of Marrakeshs identity.Koutoubia is surrounded by lush gardens, springs and fruit trees. Its exterior boasts Moorish architecture from the 15th century. Fruit juice vendors, merchandise and other miscellaneous goods are sold in the mosques vicinities. As a Muslim visitor, I had the privilege of praying inside and exploring its beautiful halls. There is also a small terrace inside where people are able to perform whudu - the ritual wash before prayer.
On of the best monument in Marrakech near sahet El fnaa
Amazing time was beautiful the views were spectacular great trip out
An astonished monument to visit in Morocco 🇲🇦 still standing more than 1000 years.
Nice view i didnt go inside but really cool to see
12th century mosque with beautiful garden. Lots of history - a must see when you in Marrakesh.
Dates back to the 12th century. Such a Berber piece of art. The largest mosque and the tallest building in Marrakech
Nice place to visit. Great architecture!
Very interesting place not only for the religion but for the history too.Nice location next to the public market and the city center. In the sunset it is more interesting to see the sun in the back part.
Nice place to visit. It is located near a botanical parc. Loved the smallgarden with orange trees 😎👍
Very interesting place. Nice garden out back!
This is a beautiful historical mosque. I marveled at its size and intracate design. A few minutes walk from the hostels in the Medina. People gather here at night to listen to music and enjoy the night air. I would recommend it as a must see to any visitors to Marrekesh.
Very nice place just for Muslims
The Friday sermon in this mosque is usually good.
Interesting history, historic treasure
Really big and nice mosqur in center of Marrakech. Clean park, nice view from the ground.
I highly recommend you to visit this really calm place.
The Koutoubia mosque is still relatively quiet on the park side and is a 12th century well-kept and lovely mosque. The other side towards the large Marrakech medina becomes a lot busier and the salesmen are everywhere. Lovely on the park side, a bit too busy on the square side.
It is such a great sight for pictures and to aprecciate all its beauty and glamour. A little busy and crowded. But it was fine.
We enjoyed the lovely mosque, the walk around it, and the large pack beside it. The sad thing is that non-muslim are not allowed in. The architecture is charming, and influenced by the Moorish construction.
Nice grand mosque however a little run down and surrounded by persistent street sellers
Beautiful mosque 😍
Soaring over Marrakesh and the meeting point in the heart of the city, the Koutoubia Mosque was built during the 12th century by the Almohad dynasty. Today, at 70 meters high, the minaret remains the highest structure and the Koutoubia Mosque the largest mosque in Marrakech. Local laws restrict any new building projects from exceeding the height of the minaret, providing a focal point for all to enjoy. While the المؤذن (Muadhin) calls the adhan (call to prayer) five times a day over the city, the mosque is off-limits to non-Muslims. But it’s worth it to wander around the base of the building, seeing the ruins and the cisterns if they are open (during special events only), as well as the lovely gardens. The mosque is open to Muslim visitors during prayer times.
Nice place, of course non Muslims cannot enter the mosque
Very beautiful and cultural place, not far from the medina of marrakech, the minaret of the mosque is the highest builing in marrakech.it would be good if we could go and see the building from the inside, but its allowed only to muslims.
Dont wanna be missing out on not seeing this place only thing about it is its only opend at pray time . But you still can enjoy the view from the out side
Beautiful Hotel, 3 swimmingpool, great Bar, but the view at sunset and night of the 3 floor Indian Restaurant was amaizing , the personal Attention and The French Manager Superb...
Historical site with lot of spirituality and good for photos
The city of Marrakesh is not mentioned except with the Koutoubia Mosque, which is one of the most ancient monuments of the Red City and its most famous cultural landmark. Northeast of the mosque. Its length is seventy-seven meters, its base is square, and the length of each side is 12.80 meters. Its four facades are distinguished by geometric decorations of turquoise-dyed ceramic frieze.Ibn Battuta narrated that he climbed it and saw the whole city, and said: There is nothing like it in the Islamic world. The Koutoubia hermitage was built with laminate sandstone, which was brought from Mount Gueliz (currently downtown Marrakesh), while its top was built with small stone and brick in its upper part to reduce its weight and preserve its steadfastness. It was built on the example of the two minarets of Hassan in Rabat and the minarets of the Giralda Mosque in Seville. The Koutoubia Mosque, which was known as (Koutoubia Mosque) - in reference to the souk of booksellers and calligraphers in which booksellers and calligraphers used to work in the vicinity of the mosque - is one of the most prominent cultural monuments in Morocco, and the icon of the city of red palms. Its construction began in 1070 AD, four years after the establishment of the Almoravid State (1147/1042 AD), while it was built in the form it is today, during the reign of the Almohads (1125 AD - 1269 AD) in the year 1158 AD by order of the Almohad Caliph Abd al-Mumin bin Ali al-Kumi (487 - 558 AH), the founding caliph of the Almohad state.
Impressive building, the highest in Marrakech.
Best historical and popular where I’ve visited in Marrakch
Non-Muslims cannot enter this mosque, but it is a fantastic landmark which you can see from all over Marrakech. And it is a moving, awesome experience to be mear it during Ramadan when thousands pour here to perform the nightly Tarawih prayer in the square outside
Went for Jummah in August. Kuthba at 1.45 and salat at 2.00.Plenty of space to read salat, people came quite late and still space.Nice garden if you want to sit around afterwardsJust to note the masjid closes after salat and opens when the Adhan is called.
A very spiritual and sacred place
Beautiful place and very tranquil. I gave it five stars because I like this sort of thing. But if you enjoy something more entertaining you may wanna skip it.
Great structure. Beautiful and relaxing place
