The Teresian Carmelites had established themselves in Goa and in Kerala in the seventeenth century. And since the region formerly known as the Carnatic, lies between Goa in the north and Kerala in the South, the Carmelites had inevitably to pass through Karnataka when proceeding by land from Goa to Kerala. And it is not surprising to find them residing at least on a temporary basis, in places like Bijapur, which form part of todays Karnataka. In his ‘Viaggio alle Indie Orientali’ Fr. Vincent Mary of St Catherine, has left us interesting descriptions of the beliefs, customs, feasts of the Canara of his time, and even of the scenic beauties and the cultivation and other aspects of life. But he found the Christians greatly neglected. And, on his reporting the need of the Canara Christians to the Holy See, Mangalore secured its first Vicar Apostolic in 1677.

Infant Jesus has been honored with a magnificent shrine at Carmel Hill, Mangalore. It has a rich symbolic meaning and significance derived principally from Biblical themes, of both the old and New testament.Symbolism:The basement surrounded by the five huge columns is intended to represent the palm of the hand of God, in accordance with the text of Isaiah, I have carved you on the palm of my hand. And the five columns represent the fingers of this Hand converging towards the overhead globe which obviously symbolizes the universe. The Cross atop the globe is an indication and symbol that Gods love has redeemed all humanity through Christ.The Sanctuary:The Attar: The frontispiece represents the hands of God, sustaining the universe and the Cross marking the globe symbolizes the sacrifice that is celebrated on the altar for universal redemption.The Crucifix is not elevated above the ground but planted on the floor of the Sanctuary to indicate God with us. The image of the Crucified is a carving, all of one piece of teak. To the right of the altar is the Tabernacle and to the left is the Bible, symbolizing Gods presence among us, in word and sacrament respectively. The ambo and the tabernacle are cast in heavy metal, the latter displaying modern artistic forms representing life and light.There are two niches, one on the right and one on the left, for the statues of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and of the Infant Jesus respectively.As the star guided the Magi to Jesus in Bethlehem, so may this shrine draw people from East and West, North and South, over land and sea, to the Savior and Creator of mankind. Amen

One of the best places to visit in Mangalore. Theres peace and tranquility here. The Church itself is beautiful. Do note that you will have an uphill climb for about 300mtrs if coming by bus. It gets very crowded on Thursdays and Sundays.

This place is situated on Carmel Hill, and is full of peace, calmness and serenity. The Shrine has people coming from many places and offering their prayers and gratitude. The annual feast is celebrated in the month of January along with 9 days of Novena starting from January 5th most of the time. Many parents visit this shrine along with their children. Each day of Novena is dedicated to a different cause. There is weekly novena mass on Thursdays. People of all ages visit this Shrine with utmost devotion and faith.

This is one of the most blessed churches Ive visited ever.The peace, the calm.. everything adds to the serenity of the place.Id also say this is a place of miracles.. and my friends would agree to the same as well.The church is located on top a hill, and hence you always have a nice cool breeze which adds to the peaceful feeling when you visit the outdoor chapel and the small shrine which is also present.

I visited the shrine on the 14th of Jan,2019 it was the feast. There was an open air mass at 10.30am there was a very big crowd gathered. The arrangement was well organized, there were volunteers to guide the people to find seating places. People of different religions come to this shrine. Some people bring offering like rice, coconut, fruits,etc. Many people who visit this shrine feel there is so much of change in their lives. If they pray for a job they get the job they deserve. If a woman is pregnant she will pray for safe delivery. Families pray asking for peace in their home. Business people pray to have success in their business. In the evening I attended for holy hour adoration where the blessed sacrament is exposed. This shrine is very spacious, ample space for car parking. The surrounding area is good. This is a shrine you should not miss.

What a peaceful place!!! Nothing great to specify , but the feeling that you get is not something that cant express. From this church we can see another church too ... Shrine is well maintained. Its clean. Natural beauty is also something that needs to be pointed out.Overall its really really good. If you are in a position to be calm and want to feel peaceful,I suggest you to go here....
