Take into account that you need to pay first and then wait to be seated. Your table choice may be on the street or inside. The waiters will put you on a table waiting list. Hand out your receipt to the waiter once you get your table. Always take your ticket, you will later give it to the waiter to get your order. If by any chance, you want something extra, youll need to go back inside to order. The churros and chocolate were delicious. They were worth the protocol we followed!
Really good address for churros lovers. The place was nice and soothing. Tables inside look chic and the wooden and glass cabinets housing the cacao products are classic. I ordered a good lemonade slush and a couple of churros with a side of chocolate sauce. The service is quick and responsive. It’s just a great place for a pause on the go if you’re touring Madrid for shopping and tourism goals.
A rich and delectable treat - the hot chocolate is quite thick and sweet, which pairs well with the churros. There was quite a long wait for seating, and the prices are a bit on the higher end compared to other cafes nearby (justified by the fact that this is a well known location). Just six churros is enough to fill up your stomach!
The churros tasted good and the hot chocolate was amazing. A lot of people visiting this place so if you want to sit down, expect to have to queue. They do have a separate queue for take aways that usually is much shorter, so a hot tip is to grab it as take away and enjoy it at Plaza Mayor a couple of blocks away!
Theyve been doing this a long time. Efficient service and tables no matter how busy. Of course it is still the pandemic season. Then again we were here a few years ago and it was handled then during peak season. See photos of downstairs, thats an option.
Serving Chocolate con Churros since 1894 The Chocolatería San Ginés has earned enough notoriety to stay open 24/7, its central location in an alley near the namesake Church frequently sporting long lines awaiting a table thanks to the somewhat confusing ordering process.A “do one thing, do it right” place, though Coffee and a few other items are offered, it is with receipt in hand that guests wait outside a space filled by marble plus velvet, items only expedited after a seat opens in order to assure freshness.Ordering almost the same thing as everyone, it was after twenty minutes of watching servers direct traffic that cut-to-length Donuts were delivered, their texture light and crisp but each mostly flavorless until dunked in stick-a-spoon-up-straight Chocolate with floral aromatics.
Very nice way of handling the rush, first place order and then find a seat, and use the receipt to tell the waiter of what you want. The hot chocolate Was very nice but it was too thick for my taste, I would prefer a little less thick one. The chocolate powder they sell was much better because that way I was able to make hot chocolate with my preferred a out of chocolate. The churros were perfect on the other hand. Staff was nice, and vibe was very chill and relaxed. Good place to go for breakfast.
Always a must in Madrid. The churros here are not very different from what you’ll find in other places in the city but what really sets this place apart is it’s hot chocolate and porras. This may not seem out of the ordinary for a foreign visitor, but unlike most cafes in Europe they do require that you order and pay in advance before being seated. Also, waiting for an outdoor table can take a bit of patience when the weather is nice out but they have plenty of indoor tables if you’re not up for a wait.
Seriously phenomenal churros, lives up to the reviews. My friends told me the churros here were not sweet and they didn’t think much of them, but the restaurants gives you sugar to add to the churros so you can decide how sweet you like them (just sprinkle as much sugar as you like!). I think it’s a great way for people to pick how sweet they want it to be.The hot chocolate serves more as a dipping sauce and is rather viscous (too viscous to drink on its own for people who don’t have a sweet tooth). It actually tastes a lot like snack pack pudding for those coming from the states, but is a perfect pairing with the churros.Their lattes are also good, and the bitterness of espresso really complements the sweetness of the churros.
Awesome place with history. Although, waiters could be nicer... specially the one on payment zone
Must see place for chocolate con churros lovers. Gorgeous classic style interior. Highly recommended.
Come here for classic Spanish 🇪🇸 churros ! Have been making them since 1800s so can’t go wrong. Lovely indoor decors that brings you back in time. Slightly on the pricey side as you pay more than €4 💴 for churros and 🍫 . Open till late! Great for after dinner chats ! Have it on the streets if you prefer because it was charming when I had mine outside when it was twilight!
I would say, that this place has turned into a tourist trap. I felt like they just try to ‘process’ as many people as they can with zero friendly approach. I really don’t understand why it’s recommended for a visit. Not to mention that my coffee tasted more like a soup. Also, at the beginning the waiter tried to send us to the bottom part with no windows - looked like he is sending there foreigners only.
There is absolutely nothing worth a visit there. It is a place that is famous but there is nothing interesting about the fried churros with chocolate. You can find the same anywhere. Tourist trap.
Yes the churros are good and so is the hot chocolate, but the service is dismal and the staff overcharged for the order. The quoted price was not actually the price that was charged. Further they didnt give me the credit card receipt from the terminal (which normally I wouldnt mind). When I received my statement I realized that the price they had charged me didnt match the transaction receipt that I was given. Overall yes, its a good place to get churros and hot chocolate but beware of the payment, especially when paying by credit card.
This is the oldest and best Chocolate and Churros places in Madrid and amongst the best in Spain. Do go there it is not to be missed and btw Opera and Sol.
If you are a tourist, avoid it. Churros are cold and expensive. Good places shouldnt survive just because they got famous. They should offer good quality in product and service non stop. That is it.
Great churros & chocolate. You wont be disappointed 🙂
The churros and chocolate tasted great, but the place smelled of wet carpet. Im sensitive to smell and found it uncomfortable, especially while eating.
It’s one of the oldest Chocolateria in Madrid. We heard stories that there were always a long line but when we got there around 9PM from a long day of sightseeing, there was none. When you first arrive, you will be greeted by the cashier and staff. You will promptly be told to order in which they will give you your ticket number and receipt. Then, just give your receipt to the waiter and find a seat.Smelling all of the flavors in the air was marvelous, and when the Hot chocolate and Churros arrive,You will know that you are in heaven. The churros were crispy and not too sweet while the hot chocolate was thick and creamy.A perfect harmony.
I believe this is the Bethlehem of Churros. If you are visiting Madrid VISIT HERE AT ALL COSTS! This is a wonderful place and the cuisines they serve here are amazing! The service here was fast, prompt and efficient! There is not much to say except you will regret it if you miss the opportunity to not come here before leaving Madrid.
Madrids most famous Churrería, you order and pay in advance and then wait for a free table, normally not more than 10 minutes. Once seated is very fast. I prefer the porras Wich are bigger than churros, one porra with chocolate should be enough. You can ask for tap water once seated.
Of course one of the MUST-DO in Madrid. This is a great experience to share with friends and family. What a pleasure to taste non-oily and fatty churros. The chocolate is intense but tasty and some sugar is given to soften it.Not that expensive and served in a typical bar.
Great place with peace of historical visitors , magic atmosphere.
Good but not the best I’ve had.
Famous hot chocolate and churros, operating since 1894! I found he chocolate a bit artificial, when I like the hot chocolate I usually finish it all, but I couldnt drink it here, it might be a matter of taste and preference, but Ive had better ones in my hometown Las Palmas. The churros were good and warm, but I mostly eat churros with chocolate for the chocolate itself ^^A bit pricier than regular joins (4.50€ for a choco cup with 6 churros), I ordered only half churros with the choco and it was 4€.
Amazing chocolate great place to take a break.
Everything was good except dirty toilets :D
I would like to be asked where to be seated. They put us inside to a dark place just to eat without enjoying! So fast food type! I would not recommend the place. It was so so.
Great experience, great and quick service, awesome flavors... Love it!The restaurant has character and the ambience is really nice.
Great Churros. This was the first time I had some. You do need to order inside and sit outside
