The Bara Imambara of Lucknow is one of the most famous monuments of the city. Also known as Asfi Imambara, after the name of the Nawab of Lucknow who got it constructed, it is an important place of worship for the Muslims who come here every year to celebrate the religious festival of Muharram. The Imambara is primarily known for its incredible maze, known as Bhul Bhulaiya locally, which is located on the upper floor of the monument. It is said that there are 1024 ways to get inside the maze but only 2 to come out. There are religious centres like the Asifi Mosque, Shahi Bawali, Rumi Darwaja, etc., are also present for one to explore. The Bara Imambara has a unique style of construction. You can opt for buses, taxis, auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws to reach Bara Imambara from any part of Lucknow. The local bus can be taken from the Alambagh bus stand which will directly take you to the Imambara.- Being a religious place, tourists are expected to cover their heads with proper clothes before entering the Imambara. These cloths are available at the main gate. You also need to take off your shoes before entering the shrine.- Carry a torch with you for exploring the baori and the Bhul Bhulaiya.- It is advised to hire a guide to prevent from getting lost in the Bhul Bhulaiya. The guide will explain each structure in great detail. Thanks for reading :)

Shia Muslims come to mourn in the month of Muharram. The monument has two levels of entrances, a large, courtyard, and many gardens. There are two magnificent entrances which are triple arched. The main building is constructed on a high platform and has three storeys.Central HallThere are nine halls in the monument and the central hall is the largest. The hall has the length of 50m and width of 16m. The ceiling is constructed at the height of 15m. The main feature of the ceiling is that there are no columns to support it. Also, no beams, iron rods or a girder were used to support the ceiling. The eight other halls are small and surround the central one.Bhul BhulaiyyaBhul Bhulayya is a part of the monument that has a network of walls. Tourists, who go to see it, must take a guide with them in order to enter and exit bhul bhulayya. The bhul bhulayya has 1000 passages and many of them are dead ends.Baoli and Asafi MasjidThe monument has a five-storey baoli or step well and is also known as Shahi Hammam. The step well is directly connected to Gomti. Out of the five storeys, three are submerged in water while two are above.Asafi Masjid was constructed inside the bara imambara by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daulah. No iron material was used in the construction of the mosque. The mosque is located to the right of the bara imambara’s gate.

One place in Lucknow which is worth visiting is this place. Amazing architecture! The entrance fee is 50 comprehensive for the chotta, bada imambara , bhool bhulaiya (labyrinth) and baoli. The bhool bhulaiya is amazing within the walls of the building and you require a guide to take you through it all. It is told that once 150 British soldiers went inside the walls in search for treasure and never managed to come out. There are 1024 ways and only one way is the right one. Scary no...at least it makes you sure that a guide is taken lest you might be sitting and having high tea with the ghost of a dead soldier ;)The bottom line is that I havent seen anything like it and it is worth the money and time. The architecture itself is amazing and for a photography enthusiast a treasure..The baoli or well too is an architectural marvel..I would rate this as 5....and I again drove 14 Kms to see it again at 6 am. However the guy with keys was nowhere to be found ... this is the best place in Lucknow. Period.

The Asafi Imambara, also known as the large Imambara or Bara Imambara is a mosque (although in India, because it is Shia, it would be called a Hussainiya ) complex in Lucknow, India, built by Asaf-ud-Daula, Nawab of Awadh, in 1784. It is also called the Asafi Imambara. Bara means big, and imambara is a sacred hall built for the purpose of Muslim rituals surrounding Muharram, known locally as Azadari, the major festival of mourning for the death of Hussein in the battle of Kerbala. The Bara Imambara is among the grandest buildings of LucknowConstruction of Bara Imambara was started in 1785, a year of a devastating famine, and one of [Asaf-ud-Daula]s objectives in embarking on this grandiose project was to provide employment for people in the region for almost a decade while the famine lasted. It is said that ordinary people used to work in the day building up the edifice, while noblemenand other elite worked at night to break down anything that was raised that day. It was a project that preceded a Keynesian like intervention for employment generation. Construction of the Imambara was completed in 1791. Estimated cost of building the Imambara ranges between half a million rupees to a million rupees. Even after completion, the Nawab used to spend between four and five hundred thousand rupees on its decoration annually.

Bara Imambara is a historical heritage of Lucknow, it is also called Bhool Bhulaiya, it was built by Nawab of Awadh, Ashifuddaula (1784-94) It is also known as Bhool Bhulaiya. Under the relief project. This huge domed hall is 50 meters long and 15 meters high. It is estimated that at that time it cost five to ten lakh rupees to make it. Not only this, even after the completion of this building, the Nawab used to spend four to five lakh rupees annually on its decoration, this huge domed building of Iranian construction style is worth seeing and feeling. It has been built in memory of the martyrdom of the late Hussain Ali. There are 84 steps to reach the roof of the building, which go in such a way that any unknown person can be confused so that the unwanted person wanders in it and cannot get out. Thats why it is called a labyrinth. The design and workmanship of this building is amazing. Such windows have been made where they can be seen by everyone entering through the main gates while the person sitting in the window cannot be seen by him. Such arrangements have been made in the narrow passages to the top so that the wind and the light of the day keep coming. The walls have been made with this technique so that even if someone talks in a whisper, that voice can be heard clearly even at a distance. Standing on the terrace, the view of Lucknow is very beautiful. If you ever go to Lucknow, then definitely see them, they are fantastic. There is also an Asafi mosque in this imambara where non-Muslim people are not allowed to enter. There are two high minarets in the courtyard of the mosque complex. The world-famous labyrinth has been built in it, which prevented the unwanted entrant from forgetting the way. It was built by the Nawab to deal with the famine lying in the state. It also has a deep well.
