Drepung Monastery is a must be visited place in Tibet. Drepung Monastery located at the foot of Mount Gephel, there are three monastery here, the other two are Sera Monastery and Ganden Monastery. Drepung Monastery is the largest of all Tibetan monasteries. In the past time Drepung was the largest monastery in the world, and housed nearly 7.700 monks.
Being here gives you a great view over Lhasa and its surroundings. I can imagine monks have chosen this place carefully to build the monastery. It also has a large assembly hall for the prayers. We were lucky enough to witness such a prayer, which was impressive. The people are utmost friendly.
It’s huge.May require whole day to explore.
This is one of the most beautiful Monastery in Lhasa region.
Beauty is a reflection in the eye and body of the beholder, once home to 6000 monks, its a place of history and spirit. Understanding appreciating the presence pure peace and joy.
Biggest monastery in the world. Beautiful and one of the attraction in Lhasa. Would not recommend if you dont have much time in lhasa
One of the best monastery to visit in Tibet
Disappearing authentic awesome Tibetan culture
Drepung monastery is considered to be of the three largest gelugpa monasteries in and around Lhasa.
Should not miss!
Lovely place
This is so freaking ugly
I need to be there.
Drepung Monastery, 10 km from Lhasa, is one of the largest of the Gelugpa sect, the Yellow Caps.It was built in 1416 by a disciple of Tsongkapa. Originally 10,000 monks resided there, today 450.In the monastic complex there is the palace, built in 1530, residence of the second, third and fourth Dalai Lamas, who were buried here. The fifth moved to the Lhasa Potala. .The great Meeting Room is carpeted with thangkas, monks robes, yellow hats. Upstairs there is the Hall of the Kings of Tibet, very high, with the statue of Jampa, the Buddha of the Future. There are four colleges to instruct monks in, inter alia, tantric studies and logic.Huge interest and suggestion; pity that you can not photograph the interiors.

Drepung Temple is located on the side of the Xigenpeiwuzi Mountain in Lhasa. 3800 meters above sea level. Built on the hillside, the environment is sparse, majestic array, densely covered with palaces. There are many sutra halls and Dhacang (monastery). Tourists do not have to worry about getting lost; if you visit in a clockwise direction, first Gandan is quite clear (the residence of Dalai V); follow the instructions, follow the flow of people, circle around, walk down and climb up; come to Cuoqin (meaning: Dafa Hall) The main hall is dedicated to the Jampa Buddha (Maitreya Buddha). Kaikuo Square outside the main hall overlooks the Yarlung Zangbo River. Go up to the Tantric Temple; down the mountain road also passes through the monastery, you can visit inside. The temples of Tibetan Buddhism are not built on a central axis like the Han Fus. There are many and scattered temples; there are bungalows or courtyard-style buildings with places of worship upstairs and downstairs. The stairs are steep. It seems to test the perseverance of believers. I admire the sincere pilgrims. There are elderly people, some with children, and there are babies in their arms. They work hard and dont miss every place of worship. Pilgrims put down some paper money every time they visit to show their sincerity. No wonder there are people holding large stacks of small banknotes in front of the ticket gate asking tourists and pilgrims if they want to exchange it.Make a circle like this, the fastest one will take 1 to 2 hours, and a closer look will take longer.Drepang means piled up rice. It was built during the Yongle period of Ming Dynasty. An important temple of Gelugpa (Yellow Sect). The Fifth Dalai Lama did not move to the Potala Palace and lived in Ganden Phozhang of Drepung Monastery. From there, he held the power of politics and religion. Therefore, Ganden Phozhang became synonymous with the local government of Tibet.Drepung Monastery is on the mountainside, but you need to buy a ticket at the gate at the foot of the mountain, and you must check the ticket when you arrive at Drepung. It takes about 30 minutes to walk from the mountain gate at the foot of the mountain to the Chebang Temple. After passing the mountain gate, there is a private car to take guests to the temple, RMB 5 yuan. To walk to the temple, in addition to the mountain along the car road, you can also follow the mountain road, and the distance is shorter. There is a small temple near the foot of the mountain, Qiong Temple, which can be reached along the mountain road.Tickets: RMB 60 (2018)Transportation: Bus No. 16 can be used. Get off at Drepung Temple Station. After visiting Drepung Monastery, if you plan to go to Sera Monastery, you can take number 16. The terminus of Sera Monastery. The journey takes about 40 minutes. But note that there is no stop sign at the station, so it is not easy to recognize it.
