According to Vakhushti Batonishvili, a silver icon of St. George was kept in this church, which is currently kept in the Georgian Art Museum. [2]By the relevant order of Nikoloz Antidze, Director of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia in 2019, it was granted the status of a real cultural heritage monument. [3]The church is a three-aisled basilica, close to the square in plan. It is built of natal with different colors of tuff and sandstone. The temple has a semicircular apse to the east. The walls were finished with a sculpted lavgard (fragments are preserved in the Shalva Amiranashvili State Museum of Art), which was replaced by a simple shelf cornice during the restoration of the temple. The St. George Cathedral was built in the sixth century and is located in the Lower Golden Mount Bolnisi near the Bolnisi Sioni. The church was restored about fifteen years ago and is preserved by UNESCO. Around the monastery is inhabited by ethnic Azeri population. On the opposite side of the monastery is a mosque. From the courtyard of the temple, it is seen both the Sioni Bolnisi built in the 5th century, and St. Georges Cathedral in Tsugashasheni, built by Lasha George and St. Peters-Paul Cathedral on Mount Elias, which was completed several years ago. About thirty kilometers from the monastery is the small town of Kazreti, where there is a famous gold mine.
The amazing sixth-century St. Georges Cathedral on the Georgian land of Lower Bolnisi, where the Georgian population does not live, was restored 15 years ago and protected by UNESCO. All Christians are advised to visit this place at least once.
