A past that was much slower in pace than today, much more contended with much lesser means, when food played a major role in everyday life. A past that also had vegetarian restaurants where only brahmins were allowed, gradually expanding to more upper castes, and yet having an exclusive brahmin eating space inside - later outlawed by a progressive DMK government.Food is really good, prices are reasonable (with an exception to be covered in the minus section below), customer service is much above average. Except for a dour faced young man at the cash counter. But maybe he had a bad start that day, who knows?Location - heart of historic Kumbakonam, inside temple precincts. Lots of knick knack shops all around.MinusesDuring this Corona age, stifling crowds, total lack of personal space (before entering the restaurant. Inside the restaurant, it is well spaced).Parking of any kind of vehicle is a night mare. Walk to this place, after parking your vehicle somewhere far away.Outrageous degree coffee price, when compared to similar rated hotels! They have two types of coffee - normal and degree. This degree is ₹35 per serving, not justified by any rationale! Taste is good, but similar tasting coffee is ₹20 at Muralis cafe!

Such a divine feeling while entering into the restaurant which is 100+ yrs old. The veg meals costs 75 rupees and they serve unlimited, You will surely get heart felt by the way food is served. The most famous thing here is the Kumbakonam degree filter coffee, which is good in taste and this is the place it is originated.

One of the best hotels Ive even been in my life... Wonderful hospitality and service...I had fantastic degree coffee, which was the most special, as the name says... since they own this shop for more than 100 years... And I had idli and dosa... Every server takes up so much responsibility and care to ensure you eat as much as possible and you leave stomach and heart filled...For the owner... You are simply amazing sir... Hats off... One simple example -I had asked for hot water to drink... The owner ensured they didnt give water that was already kept and asked them to heat water n give separately... That much in detail...Totally worth giving it a shot... I bet you would never regret...

Dishes are too good and budget friendly too...this hotel brings traditional flavour in their dishes than adding masala powders...unbeatable taste...the servers working here were friendly and kind enough...overall loved the hotel

It’s a very old traditional restaurant since 1914. The restaurant is like a time machine and walking inside, you will be transported to the previous era. The walls and windows reminded me of my childhood days at grandmas house. Even the painting style evokes a nostalgic memory! The menu is a simple no flair menu. I visited here during the COVID lockdown and didn’t get to dine in. The prices were not so low but pretty moderate with any tiffin item costing less than 50. Though the restaurant made every effort to catch up on changing prices, it doesn’t seem like the case when it comes to taste and quality. I had parotta with kuruma and the taste was normal to subpar. I also felt a lot of hard stone like granules caught in my mouth often which made me wonder about their quality. Over all you can visit here once and get transported to the old days but eating here repeatedly will not be my recommendation.

Leave the ambience and commercial /professional aspects aside.. Just go and have the homely food... Limited menu.. But they make it good.. Really good.. My fav is adai aviyal.. Less expensive price.. 100/person..meals is good at 75.. Curd extra 8rs. I had nearly all my food during my stay for 4 days.. Their coffee is too good.. Service by those mama and Mami is very welcoming..

Was worth every recommendation. Had lunch and it was simple and homely but really tasty. And had coffee which was out of the world. For a taste of real South Indian food and kumbakonam degree coffee, this is the place.

This is truly a place of historic importance. The restaurant has been there since 1914.Staff is very polite ans nice.Food is fantastic.To reach, its inside the temple shopping area, not visible from outside.

Had breakfast here, it was tasty and really enjoyed the food with family. One disappointing thing the so called famous degree coffee was so bland. It wasnt good. Too much water in milk. It literally tasted like hot water. Never expected this.

Had a heart warming experience in this famous outlet which resonates the essence of this culture rich city. A Must visit place for all food lovers . Degree Kaapi and Kadappa are must try . Check with hotel as Kadapa is served only once a week. All food served here are drool worthy . Cost wise very nominal.

Meals was good devoid of any spiciness. Staffs were very polite and were frequently checking and served us with rice and sides whenever they were about to go empty and as per our preference. Even though we had a heavy lunch, it got digested easily.Icing on the cake was they agreed to charge one meals price for the food served to two kids.

A place for all authentic delicacies of South Indian served on plantain leaf We tried vada, Pongal, Rava Onion Dosa, idli and coffee. Everything was very delicious, without much oil or any soda. Try once when In Kumbakonam. Friendly staff welcome you throughout. Pongal was so authentic, hadnt tasted such origanality in years. Thanks to them.

Highly overrated, both the quality and experience. While the quality and taste of the standard Tamilian vegetarian fare are just OK, the taste of the main side dishes especially the sambhar is below par. The rava dosai here is quite sad. More importantly the ambience and hygiene standards are pathetic and at least for that this place is best avoided. The person who clears the leaves and cleans the table also serves drinking water. Best avoided, given the better options available in Kumbakonam.

Searched online when traveling to kumbakonam and was hard to find the hotel as it was very small. Once visited , next time when visited kumbakonam we could easily find. Had dosa with kodsu. Everyday different menu . Food Was really tasty . And they also provide parcels for ppl traveling to other cities like puli sadam,podi idli etc., Gpay accepted. Reach at 7 or so if planning for dinner on weekends . Will be crowded by 8 or 8.30. you will surely enjoy the authentic taste of the food

Amazing home style food 🙌🏻 we were asked to try this place out by locals. The place is quite small with limited seating. However the food is truly great. They have a variety of unique dishes that are hard to find outside and the taste is amazing. Personal favourites were arisi upma, Adai Avial and godhuma barotta. The coffee is also very good here. They serve Kadapas only on Thursday’s so we missed having the same. A must visit place.

A very old restaurant, located on the way to the temple. To tell about the food its Okay, the reason why i say okay is, the food tastes when all the elements come in a perfect balance. For example if a you are having a Dosa or idly, the sambar and chutney accompanying it should be also good then only the dosa and idly tastes good. Not everyone will like the taste served here. Coffee, that was perfect one, i loved it.

This is the original Mangalambika hotel from 1914, please dont be fooled by the other fake place which pays commissions to auto guys to take people there!!The food and coffee was simply superb here, sadly we reached a bit late so the sweet owner Uncle even asked us to come back next day so that he could offer us more variety. Please visit this place if in Kumbakonam for some amazing food and cultural experience.

Very Authentic, Traditional Tamilnadu food. Good service. Very homely & Hospitable. The best part is they have Arisi Upma also for dinner. (People with senior citizens in the family who have food restrictions, will understand the significance of this). I would recommend anyone who visits Kumbakonam, to visit this place.
