In 1900, the electrification of the tramway and conversion of its tracks to 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in(1,435 mm) (standard gauge) began. The first electric tramcar in India ran from Esplanade to Kidderpore on 27 March 1902, with service from Esplanade to Kalighatintroduced on 14 June of that year. The Kalighat line was extended to Tollygunge, the Esplanade line to Belgachia (via Bidhan Sarani, Shyambazar), and the Esplanade to Sealdah route (via Binay Badal Dinesh Bag, Rajib Gandhi Sarani and present-day Mahatma Gandhi Road) opened the following year. In 1904, the Esplanade to Bagbazar route through College Street opened. In June 1905, the Howrah Station to Bandhaghat route opened and the electrification project was completed. In 1906, the Bowbazar Junction to Binay Badal Dinesh Bag and the Ahiritola Junction to Hatibagan Junction routes opened.

At least few dust control activities with proper cleanness need to focus by the competent authority. After all, it has historical value and CTC is still functioning as alive as paid transportation for public.

One of the oldest tram Depot in Kolkata and have the old rustic feel to it. Trams are after 30 mins heading towards Shyambazar and Gariahat, they are developing new concepts like Book Library, Jute Tram and so on. Also AC Tram has been introduced to make more accessible and comfortable but ride is really slow would only recommend this mode of transport only when you have time and patience, there is new tyre themed park beside tram depot.

Its a good place to spend time in the evening with lots of trees and you also have darces lane just opposite for food

Just loved it. What a ride from Esplaned to Belgachia. It was the unique and mesmerising trip for my family. Its a pride and heritage of Kolkata. Fare is also very very cheap as compared to others. Yes its time consuming but enjoyable especially for visitors. And Im sure childrens will love the ride.

The Esplanade Tram Depot is situated in Central Kolkatas Dharmatala Area. I had once travelled by tram from Rash Behari Avenue to Esplanade via Kalighat - Hazra - Judges Court Road (Gopalnagar) - DH Road - Khidirpur - Hastings - Fort William Route during my schooldays. This tram depot is accessible from various areas like BBD Bag, Wellington Square, Park Street and Chandni Chowk :)
