An age-old temple, standing tall in the heart of Kolkata for over three centuries. Even though this temple is small in terms of size, but its popularity is equivalent to that of the revered Dakshineswar & Kalighat Temples. Everyday hundreds of devotees offer prayers at this sacred site, after purchasing the puja materials and flowers from one of the several shops lined up outside the temples complex. Please keep in mind that this temple is situated in an extremely crowded & noisy area, near College Street. So, if you are looking for a peaceful & tranquil temple environment, then its not the perfect place to visit. Recommended. 👍🏻
Kalibaris of Bengal: The historic and famous Thanthania Kalibari is the temple of Maa Siddheshwari Kali. The temple is more than 300 years old and the deity is over 500 years old. The present temple was estabilished in the year 1803 by Sri Shankar Chandra Ghosh..It is said, the area was once covered in dense vegetation and frequented by dacoits. To warn the nearby settlements a bell was installed and it was rung when dacoits attacked. The ‘than, than’ (ঠন ঠন) sound of the bell may have been replicated and used in nomenclature of place as ‘Thanthania’.
My go to place to calm myself down, whenever I am going through any stress.

When my friend wanted to visit a Kali Mandir , my 89 year old mother suggested to take her to Thanthania Kali Mandir. This was visited by Ramakrishna .Generally this place is quite easily accessible and the view of the idol is clear as the photos will suggest. The place could be kept a bit more cleaner but overall quite good

Thanthania Kalibari is a Kali temple on Bidhan Sarani in Kolkata. The deity in the temple is known as Siddheshwari. The plaque on the top of the temple dates the temple back to 1110 Bengali Year (১১১০ বঙ্গাব্দ) or approximately 1703 AD. A marble tablet installed on the inside of the temple reiterates the above date and credits Babu Shankar Ghosh for the erection of the temple. On the contrary, as per HEA Cotton’s Calcutta Old and New (P 981) the Siddheswari Kali idol at Thanthania in Cornwallis Street (now renamed to Bidhan Sarani) was established by one Brahmachari named Udaynarayan .Babu Shankar Chandra Ghosh of Thanthania erected the present temple in 1210 Bengali Year approximately 1803 ADThe idol of the presiding deity Siddheshwari is made of clay and the idol is painted every year with the colors red and black. Tuesdays and Saturdays are considered auspicious for a visit to the temple. The temple is 300+ years old, and the idol is even older. Must have darshan

Its a very popular temple Thanthania Kalibari is a Kali temple on Bidhan Sarani in Kolkata. The deity in the temple is known as Siddheshwari. On the occasion of Kali Puja, devotees gather at the temple for worship.
Very famous temple of Kolkata l, people used to come here from everywhere. Its a temple of Goddess Kali. The place has become very dirty and poorly maintained..and thus the popularity had fallen a bit now days. But you could see regular college students coming here to pray..
Very good place. From there all connectivity available. Be it tramp( a road train) or local bus etc
It’s full of faith and have lot of respect in Kolkata. Not very crowded, so you can have Darsan very comfortably.
A place where one can calmly sit down and pray. Place is good enough. Well maintained temple. Only drawback being the outside which is congested with people and families of the less fortunate who stay just besides the temple gates thus generating obvious waste and scraps. Someone should look into it and help relocate those people to a decent place and clean the temple outsides as well.
Place with spiritual calmness. House of Maa Kali. Everyday many people visit here to pray to goddess Kali and to pay their gratitude.
This Temple is very old, in fact older than our city itself. It one of the iconic landmarks of this city. The Goddess Kali reigning here is most revered. She is here with the God Shiva who is enthroned in His own room within the temple complex. This place is visited by hundreds daily. On auspicious occasions the number swells to literally thousands. My only regret is that, in the name of renovation, the traditional beauty of the ancient building has been ruined by an outer layer of deep maroon, modern tiles. I wish that the Sebayats had consulted someone knowledgable before commencing on the act.
Nice
Very old and famous Kali temple. Fortunate to visit and view the same.
One of the famous kali mandir around kolkata. Great place for prayer
Easy to locate.. Ram Mandir is a nearby place. Also the college Street crossing is just 200 metres away.. Bata showroom is also close to the temple..
Very old renowned kali mandir with Kolkata history.Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa (রামকৃষ্ণ পরমহংস) is said to have frequented the temple when he was staying close by at Jhamapukur Lane, at Shri Ramprasad Mitra’s house sometime around 1853 AD.
The ambience says all. Visit yourself to experience the thrill of standing in front of one of the oldest dieties of Lord Kali in Kolkata.
Holi place. Well managed by police in view of no of devotees visiting. Well maintained.
A small but historic temple located between college street and Girish park. The temple is dedicated to goddess Kali and has a thick surge of devotees throughout the day. The place is bustling and synonyms with what one experiences in the North half of Kolkata. Beautiful ambiance and blessed to have gone there.
Nice temple. You should visit in the evening time when arati happens. Though there is problem with beggars and heap of garlands infront of the temple creating nuisance
Holy place makes you feel differently. There is calm and sense of relief as soon as you enter it!
Wonderful place. Went early morning with my 87 years old mom. All the staff members including police personals helped to pay homage to the goddess kali. It was quite crowded due to Bengali New Year. But the experience was really good.
