CALCUTTA BRANCH of Oil India Limited [the then Burma Oil Company (India Trading Ltd), incorporated in Great Britain & Assam Oil Company, incorporated in Scotland] operated from Victoria House, Chowringhee Square ,Calcutta. It was principally responsible for the import clearance / shipping function of these two companies. Head of the Calcutta Branch activities was called Agent.Oil India Limited was incorporated in the year 1959 as a rupee company with two-third shares owned by BOC of UK and one-third by the Govt.Of India. From 1962, Burma Oil Company (India Trading Ltd), incorporated in Great Britain was undertaken by Govt. of India with proportionate holdings and named as OIL INDIA LIMITED. However, the Assam Oil Company, incorporated in Scotland remained as separated company (not undertaken by the Govt. of India). CALCUTTA BRANCH of Oil India Limited was responsible for import clearance / shipping function of both the companies. Since then the Head of the Calcutta Branch activities was called Branch Manager.Till 1980, the procurement of imported materials (i.e. against the orders, placed by Oil India Limited & Assam Oil Company) were first consolidated in London by Burma Oil Company for which they used to take a procurement charge of 2% of total invoiced value of each consignment, supplied by the overseas suppliers to Burma Oil Company, London. After consolidation, the consignments were shipped (by sea or air) by Burma Oil Company, London to Calcutta for clearance and dispatch to the respective locations (except the bulk cargoes). After clearance of materials through customs, consignments were sent to RSN Company at Surinam Ghat and Brooklyn Godown (depending upon the volume of transportation) for onward dispatch to Duliajan & Digboi. From Surinam Ghat, some of the voluminous materials were loaded to steamer boats for inland water transportation up to Pandu Ghat in Assam from where the materials were re-transported to the destinations by rail or road. Rest of the materials were booked through railway up to New Bongaigoan and after transshipment, those were sent to the destination by rail.During 1960, all the shipping activities were controlled by a very unique system called CARDEX, already implemented by Burma Oil Company long back. This system can also be called as COLOUR STICKER INDICATORS of the different actions (with different colours) taken against each order from the date of receipt of order copy (from Duliajan & Digboi) till its physical clearance.Shipping Department was responsible for processing all types of formalities and follow up of export of WAX, received from AOC, Digboi. Exportable wax were sent by AOC, Digboi direct to Budge Budge by road and after completion of processing relevant export documents and formalities, these were exported through a Clearing House at Budge Budge. This system of exporting wax of AOC, Digboi continued till 1980/81.Materials supplied by all Indian vendors (out side Calcutta) against different orders, placed from Calcutta, Digboi and Duliajan were received in either Howrah Goods Yard or Sealdah Good Yard or Shalimar Goods Yard. Then all the consignments were consolidated and sent to the respective destinations by road. This system of consolidation & dispatch of indigenous materials from Calcutta continued till 1980/81.The same office was shifted to the present address -India Exchange Bldg,4th floor India Exchange place ,Calcutta-1 w.e.f 01/09/1955.The Head of OIL Calcutta Office was designated as under- Agent from 1955 to 1962.- Branch Manager till 1991- Chief Manager till 2005.- Head( CB) w.e.f 2005.
