Mahabodhi Society is at 4A, Bankim Chatterjee St, Kolkata-700073 near College Street. This South Asian Buddhist society founded in 1891 at Colombo by Anagarika Dharmapala, a srilankan and a British journalist Sir Edwin Arnold with the aim of restoration of the Buddhism and Buddhist temple in India, specially at Buddha Gaya, Sarnath . Today this is the head quarter of Mahabodhi Society of India.

The Maha Bodhi Society is a South AsianBuddhistsociety founded by the Sri LankanBuddhist leader Anagarika Dharmapala and the British journalist and poet Sir Edwin Arnold. The organizations self-stated initial efforts were for the resuscitation of Buddhism in India, and restoring the ancient Buddhist shrines at Bodh Gaya, Sarnath and Kushinara.Although some Indians had remained culturally Buddhist for centuries after the decline of Buddhist philosophy, they did not self-identify as Buddhist. The place is very peaceful . If you want to come come during the meditation time. The meditation time is Saturday. The 1st Saturday of each month for minor meditation and 2nd Saturday for adults meditation.

The Mahabodhi Society at 4A, Bankim Chatterjee Street, Kolkata - 700073 is a very important landmark. In fact it consists of two buildings that houses the Head Quarters of the Society, a beautiful Buddha Temple, Society’s book shop, a guest house and some miscellaneous departments. It was founded by Anagarika Dhammapala in May 1891 for the purpose of resuscitation of Buddhism in India and for restoring the ancient Buddhist shrines at Buddha Gaya, Sarnath and Kushinara. Anagarika Dhammapala established the Headquarters in Calcutta (presently Kolkata) as he wanted to pay full attention to the restoration and revival of the glory and sanctity of Buddha Gaya. For this he founded the first centre in Buddha Gaya and then followed it up with centres in Sarnath, Sanchi, etc. In front of the red and yellow building of the Society, on the eastern side gate is a full scale statue of the founder. This building houses the book shop containing a huge collection of books, some of them rare, on Buddhism. On the back side of the building on the second floor accessible by a staircase is a beautiful bust of Anagarika Dhammapala. From the third floor balcony the visitor can reach the beautiful Buddhist temple which among other statues there are Buddha Statues received from other countries. There are two columns in the middle of the hall and walls are adorned with beautiful colour and fresco paintings on the life of Buddha. The ambience of this temple is out of the world and will fill you with peace and joy.

Parking is a huge issue! You would not want to take your car here. And if you reach by cab there is every possibility that the driver cant reach till the gate because of the thick crowd. Otherwise its a good place once you reach, also, it has a lovely Buddhist temple at the top floor, you wouldnt want to miss!

Their guesthouse is a descent place to stay at a cheap price. Sure you cannot drink and stuff. But the location is good enough if you dont care about the noise.Basic amenities are available.

Dormitory and rooms are available. Some rooms have attached bath some dont. Dorm rate is nominal( Rs 150/night). Room rates are higher compared to facilities. Common areas are clean enough, but bathroom and rooms need more cleaning. You can book only by physically being there.

Noisy for a seminar

After renovation it has become excellent. The evening prayers do not cause any disturbance. There is scope for improvement in sitting arrangement.

Ive never gone in but from outside its spectacular architecture amuses me everytime I have a glance on it. Its one of the oldest buildings of Calcutta bearing its contemporary retro classical artistic architecture and spells over the beholders. Its no doubt an heritage building reflecting its century long dignity.

Mid place of college square. 5 to 6 colleges surrounds this society. Presidency university just beside this society. Swimming pool is present just front of this. Its a beautiful history i.e it was established by Anagorik Dharmapal followed by the support of Rahul Sankrityayn. The todays Buddha Gaya is felt the contribution of the Mahabodhi Society. It keeps about all types of Buddhist philosophical books . Rest you get at the Buddhist Society at Buddhist Temple Road near Bou bazar PS , Kolkata. Both have guest house. The former one is at College St, near Calcutta University. One can come here for tour purpose. Since the College St is nearer, one can search all types of book here. Frequently, the foreigners are come here. In the distance of about 10 km, at Dhakuria, near Jadavpur, a monastery is existed there.

Very good place to visit

A worth visiting place in Kolkata for experiencing the timeless history of British Indian architectures around the street filled with modern day book shops and old style restaurents. But most importantly, its the place where Buddhism and Theosophy flourished during the early 19th and 20th century British India and several such intellectual and cultural movement was initiated on these so called present day College street.
