Very low standard now . Its a money making institute . Donation and recommendations are always preferred. Higher authorities are involved in the money laundering business for admission . Talking from my personal experience . They have brokers outside the school. And its like a chain system now . Donate money and admit your son there. Cant believe this standard . Please take good information about the teachers before you think to admit your son there because the standard of education has gone down .They dont even complete the syllabus .

For Class XI they take 50,000 donation.The commerce stream is worst of all. Mostly slum people goes. All yo will learn is some unspeakable slangs. And interestingly the teachers encourage those goons to use those words. Unbelievable.Then almost everyday there are numerous 0 period, basically free periods; when teachers dont show off. And those so called students makes the classroom worse than a fish market. No manners, no etiquette, no discipline. Well that is what can be expected from the backgrounds of where these non senses are coming from.Maths is an important subject and the lady teacher finishes 1/2 chapters in every single class!! Ridiculous! No explanation, nothing.If you still want to enrol your ward to this school, please do so in the SCIENCE stream. Which is good. But never ever to the Rowdy uncultured COMMERCE stream.

The origins of CBS are closely linked with the establishment of the Methodist Episcopal Churchin India. In January 1873, the Reverend William Taylor founded the work of the ThoburnMethodist Episcopal Church in Calcutta(Kolkata). He was succeeded by the Reverend James Mills Thoburn. The latters ardent preaching soon rendered the Entally Baptist Chapel unable to cope with the increasing number of converts.[2] In February 1874, a new chapel was opened at 145 Dharamtolla Street, built at a cost of 16,000 rupees largely due to the generosity of George Bowen of Bombay who donated 10,000 rupees.[3] Soon even this chapel proved unable to accommodate the growing congregation, until a larger church was constructed on Dharamtolla Street, where it stands today. The New Thoburn Church was dedicated on 31 December 1875. In 1888 Rev. James Mills Thoburn was elected Missionary Bishop of India and Malaysia - the first ever Missionary Bishop in India.[2]It was Bishop Thoburn who founded the Calcutta Boys School. First located at Mott Lane, and then later housed in a room on Corporation Street (known as S. N. Banerjee Road today), the school struggled for survival without a building of its own. It acquired a permanent residence in 1893 thanks to the generosity of a man who could be regarded as the chief patron of the school: Sir Robert Laidlaw.

One of the best schools in Kolkata with major admin incapabilities lately....nasty toilets, no proper drinking water(unpurified), the beautiful large field has been a complete mess for years now. Even students dont have proper classes to sit in and some of the classes are arranged in the corridors where there are no proper fans and sitting arrangements.The school admin must be much more proactive in solving these basic and daily problems immediately and keep up the fame of the school before they get too questionable.I am always been a fan of this school but really find it very strange to learn that these basic requirements are all being overlooked....

Thoburn who founded Calcutta Boys’ School in 1877. The school was first located on the rear veranda of the Thoburn Church Parsonage, then located on Dharamtalla Street opposite the Thoburn Church (currently the B.H. Smith & Co.) with its opening in Motts Lane, and then housed in a room on Corporation Street near Whiteaways. Later, the seat of learning was shifted to the room at the corner of Princep Street opposite Wellington Square while the resident students continued to live in the Parsonage.The school finally acquired its own building at the current location on S.N.
