Dutch presence in Indian history is small but very significant. Dutch had set up their presence in Hooghly by the river side. But due to many reasons they did not take root. Their settlement fell into disuse. The Dutch Cemetery was constructed on the order of the director of the Dutch East India Company in Bengal Louis Taillefert. The cemetery is now maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. Only recently with the help of Dutch government, Presidency University and ASI restoration has been done. This Dutch Cemetery reminds the presence of Dutch to the visitors.

A forgotten bygone era, when many foreign sailors set sail for India, and established bases here in Hooghly-Chinsurah and trade flourished, The Dutch were here in the early 18th century through the 19th century. A cemetery stands the testimony of their glorious past.

A suburb of Kolkata now, Chinsurah was an erstwhile Dutch colony. A flourishing port during the 17th century, the town has a distinct Dutch influence and is again about 60 km from Kolkata. One of the main attractionsof this tiny city is the Dutch cemetery located in the centre of town. Built by Louis Taillefert, a former head of the erstwhile United East Indian Company (referred by the Dutch as VOC or Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie), the cemetery has graves of Dutch citizens, who died between 1743 and 1846. The oldest tomb is that of Sir Cornelius Jonge, who passed away in 1743. The graves include that of the former Dutch governors and other prominent personalities during those times. The tombs are varied in size, some of them being rather large. Maintained by theArchaeological Survey of India (ASI), this place is now a heritage site though still relatively unknown and less-frequented by tourists. Set amidst greenery with the tombs interspersed with walkways, the place certainly has mysterious appeal to it apart from its historical significance.

An area under the surveillance of The Archaeological Survey of India. There are about 190 Dutch and British tombs.Largely unknown to the world, here one finds the beginning of the stories of womens education in India, the Dutch General who fought in the Maratha army, the Freemasons in India and the lady who inspired the bollywood blockbuster Saat Khoon Maaf.Initiatives have been taken by the Embassy of Netherlands and also the Presidency University to preserve its heritage.
