If you are looking for very light food then this could be your destination. Foods are awesome, they dont even use onion/garlic in any dish which makes all the dish very light. But if you think it will be cheaper like other pice hotel then you might be wrong as they charge individually for each dish you ordered even for the banana leaf as well. But you want to taste homely food in a environment like 70-80s Kolkata then you must visit this place once.

Today we visited Hotel Tarun Niketan which is a located near Lake Mall at Kalighat. We ordered bhat/rice, aloo bhaja, dhokar dalna, rui maach and golda chingri. The food was absolutely delicious with reasonable price. Hotel Tarun Niketan is known to be a 104years old pice hotel in Kolkata where time stood still. If you ever want to taste that solely bengali cuisine within affordable price this is the place you are looking for..Follow us @what_bengalis_eat on instagram for more such food contents.

The place , famous for its bengali traditional food and also a paise hotel in nature is found to be bit shaded these days if to be compared in terms of price. Although I feel good enough if I put price tag aside.Place is very near to Kalighat metro station, right hand while facing towards Garihat.

I dont know how to explain this but the satisfaction I get after having a meal at a proper Pice Hotel is way more than a high class restaurant. Probably because my love towards authentic Bengali food. The old Calcutta vibes and feel in such places gives a different pleasure all together. Being a proper Pice Hotel Torun Niketan excels in all these points.I took Rice, Ucche Pepe Moong Dal, Aloo Bhaja, Khasir Mangso and Tomato Khejurer Chatney. Everything was served on a Banana Leaf. All of the dishes werent very spicy unlike other places and homely made.On my second visit I was blown away by their Macher Tel Chocchori and I highly recommend it with plain rice. Try their fish items that tastes very unique. Prices are very reasonable and that old Calcutta ambiance, youll seriously get a different experience at Tarun Niketan. It will stay one of my favorite Pice Hotel for long time.

I am visiting this place for quite a long time now whenever I come to Calcutta and am near Rashbehari Area I surely eat out here. Typical bengali flavour, spices are mild compared to Swadhin Bharot, great variety. I love simple homestyle mutton curry here although they have lots of fish also available.

First of all, do not and please do not believe the reviews or videos that you see about this place on social media or videos. There is a huge difference in what was shown and Reality. I start with very basics when I visit a place to eat. I ordered Fish ( বোয়াল মাছ ) and Rice to start from here and a takeaway so I can understand the regular approach by the place. The Rice is normal grain and sufficient for me - hence focused on fish. The container contains two small hairs ( as shown on picture ), found the first one after opening the container. Next one came within the gravy while eating. The gravy is a common for other fishes too... Ive experienced two-three different kind of smell of fish from the gravy, so its a common bowl for the fishes and the small hairs too. 80/- INR for one piece of fish and gravy is acceptable but the gravy is oily, rich in spices (red chillies specifically ) and not at all good in taste. Being a bong, i grew up with Rice+fish bonding.... And this gravy is worst... Ever. Not at all recommended.... Hence single Star.

A 105 year old Bengali hotel, with lots of option. Food are less oily. They serve basmati rice as white rice. Food will be served on banana leaf. Vetki paturi, macher dimer Baja, ilisher matha die Kochu saak, ucche aloo vaja, Amer chatni. All of those items are really good. It cost 800/- for 3(as some of the items has been reordered. It was really worth paying. The only con is salt was not added properly to the fish items. However that can be ignored. Okay those who are looking for recipes without onion and garlic they can give a try here.

This is an age-old Pice Hotel, serving good quality traditional Bengali cuisines at affordable prices. If food is your Only priority and you are happy to ignore the shabby ambience, then I would suggest you to visit this restaurant. The chicken & the mutton items were extremely non-spicy and easy to digest. Foods are served on fresh banana leaves and the serving quantity is decent. This place is very popular and you can see several newspaper cuttings pasted on the walls, bearing the name & review of this Pice Hotel. However, I would like to suggest the management to focus on their kitchen hygeine, because hairs were found in the chicken curry. Overall, its a good experience. Recommended. 👍

#Picehotels have a long history attached to them in Kolkata and the rest of Bengal - it is said that this genre came to existence when a full meal used to cost 1 paisa only - good old days.. My tryst with these kind of restaurants started during my early school days when my parents sometimes used to take me for a meal at few of them instead of the usual Park Street favourites which we used to frequent more often..It was a filling meal alongwith great adda with an eminent fellow blogger from Hyderabad - what else does one want on a Thursday afternoon!!Service was super prompt & the place was neat & clean contrary to common perception that such places are not hygienic.. Please go through the snaps for more on what we had..And yes, the meal doesnt cost #1paisa anymore but its still an extremely economical deal considering all that we had came down to only 200 bucks per person.. That was sheer bliss!!Journey of an Epicurean Cine Trotter (BLOG/FACEBOOK) continues..My journey can also be tracked on INSTAGRAM via @epicureancinetrotterBy the way, have you joined Kolkata Food Trotters on FACEBOOK yet??Do you have a similar pice hotel story to share??

One unique feature of this restaurant is that the vegetarian dishes are prepared without the use of onion or garlic. Its a paice hotel (means only rice servers unlimited here). Foods servers here on banana leaf (they count the cost of Banana leaf and glass for drinking water, who did that?😂😂😂). Foods are just ok. Less salt and spices. Ideal for people suffering stomach diseases. Having tradition over 100 years but still very untidy. Table and chairs are so small you cant sit here comfortably. Wash basin is the worst. Smelt so bad you gonna vomit there. I think if they want to keep there tradition they need will power to keep it going.

In my attempt to revisit the iconic restaurants of Kolkata (preferably 100 year olds) I went to a pice hotel named Tarun Niketan at 1B Rashbehari Avenue ..Pice hotels are eateries where each item is individually priced from the banana leaf on which the food is served to the lemon wedge along with the food items that you order ..Tarun Niketan was established in 1915. Time has stood still here since then. It is a humble, nondescript hotel serving extraordinarily low-priced, home style authentic Bengali food to a vast range of client base, from various strata of society. We had ordered aloo uchchhe bhaja, bok phooler bora, machher dim er bora, chingri maacher bora, katla machh bhaja, mushurir daal, bhetki machher paturi, ilish machher jhol, pathar mangsho and paid around ₹680.. the ‘machher dim er bora’, ‘chingri machher bora’ were as large as the palm of my hand .. the mutton was soft, succulent with a big piece of potato exactly like it is cooked on Sundays in a typical Bengali home .. had to skip chutney since we were too full ..There were many other items for which we will have to visit again .. like aloo posto, ilish machher matha diye kochur shaak, peyaj koli diye morola machher chochhori etc etc..Hotel Tarun NiketanLocation: Beside a fruit stall, few steps after the first lane on the right, while going from Rashbehari More to Lake Market is the entrance of the hotel on the main road with the name properly displayed, though the actual hotel is a bit inside
