Some of the sculptures are fabulous. The gardens open from 0530-6 in the early morning and that seems to be the best time to go nowadays. The sun is up and its cool. The entry to the garden is Rs 20 per head.Toilets inside are well maintained. Lots of trash cans around to help people keep the gardens clean. The museum opens at 11 am.Ive put lots of snaps.

It is also a great photogenic place and hence draws the attention of many photographers. There is a security check at the entrance which ensures the security of the visitors. The reflection of the museum on the lake provides great photographs to the visitors. I would definitely recommend you to visit Victoria memorial at least once if you ever come to Kolkata.

One of the landmark structures of Kolkata. Built in memory for queen Victoria over the span of 15 years from 1906-1921. Built completely in Makrana marble mined in Rajasthan. It comprises a memorial building and museums. Museums explain about the history of Kolkata and British colonial exploits over them. Total atmosphere is very calm and peaceful with meadows and lakes around it. Worth to spend a day with your family. It requires a entry ticket which is very minimal. Must visit place in Kolkata.

I had gone there during the day and mostly found tourists and couples hanging out there. And since the pandemic, its not that crowded now. You can easily sit on the benches provided or walk around in the garden maintaining social distance. This is also a good place to chill and relax.

I am a huge fan of places that have a background of history to it. One of such places is The Victoria Memorial. It is a fine depiction of the Indo-Gothic architecture. I love the fact that it is made completely out of Marble and that its white hue still amazes you till this date. After the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, the British government gathered the reins of control of the country directly, and in 1876 the British parliament made Victoria the Empress of India. The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, which was built between 1906 and 1921. It is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria, then Empress of India, and is now a museum and tourist destination under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. The memorial lies on the Maidan (grounds) by the bank of the Hooghly River, near Jawaharlal Nehru Road (better known as Chowringhee Road)In front of this , there is a park for all. One can spend time with charming calm environment in busy Kolkata. The Victoria Memorial has 25 galleries. These include the royal gallery, the national leaders gallery, the portrait gallery, central hall, the sculpture gallery, the arms and armoury gallery and the newer, Calcutta gallery. The Victoria Memorial has the largest single collection of the works of Thomas Daniell (1749–1840) and his nephew, William Daniell (1769–1837).It also has a collection of rare and antiquarian books such as the illustrated works of William Shakespeare, the Arabian Nights and the Rubaiyat by Omar Khayyam as well as books about kathak dance and thumri music by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. However, the galleries and their exhibitions, the programmatic elements of the memorial do not compete with the purely architectural spaces or voids.

Victoria Memorial Hall is a good attraction in Calcutta. The building and grounds are impressive. The architect did a good job at design and positioning of the building. Although you do have to look past the deferred maintenance on the grounds. There is a fair amount of rubbish scattered around the park and there are plenty of missing chunks out of the sidewalks and pathways. In general, the grounds appear to be minimally maintained. As to the interior, there are two temporary and one permanent exhibit on display. The first of the temporary is a rather mundane collection of art showing the early days of the British settlement. It is very poorly lit making it hard to see the art which hangs on painted plywood walls. The second temporary exhibit is a terrific collection of Calcutta photos from the period 1940 – 1977 by Jayant Patel (note here: this is NOT the Jayant Patel who was the doctor arrested in 2005 in a giant international health scandal. This Patel is a noted Bombay photographer.) In any case, the photo collection is superior and has many interesting photos of that era.The permanent collection is a well done story of the founding and development of Calcutta. It provides a wonderful education in the history of the area. All in all, a nice place to spend part of a day (but be mindful there are no toilets in the building although there are a few at the far corner of the grounds.)

This is a grand old colonial style palatial building. It is completely made of marble, just like the magnificent Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The architecture reflects a fine mix of British and Indian architectural styles blended with Mughal and European styles. The domes and minarets, the arches and pillars, the Angel of Victory atop the central dome – all make this building an architectural masterpiece. The place encompasses a magnificent museum spread over about twenty to twenty five galleries. The Royal gallery displays the life and works of the British royals while the Calcutta gallery showcases the history of this lovely city.Last but not the least, the place boasts of an amazing garden sprawling across acres of land.No doubt, the Victoria Memorial is one of the most sought-after destinations in Kolkata.
