Metro Railway has requested the Calcutta airport authorities to allow the existing Biman Bandar station to be shifted near the integrated terminal building that is being built, to facilitate the smooth transit of passengers. The existing station is around 200 metres from where the integrated terminal building is coming up. Metro rail officials also requested the airport director, R. Srinivasan, to allow the installation of a walkalator between the terminal building and the station. “We have received the request from Metro rail and the matters will be discussed,” said Srinivasan.Metro officials said the existing Biman Bandar station is the terminal station for the ill-conceived suburban rail service from Dum Dum, which has been running practically without passengers for the past three years.Recently, the Railway Board had sanctioned a project to convert the Dum Dum Cantonment-Biman Bandar suburban train service into Metro rail. “The elevated tracks that were laid for the suburban rail service can remain since Metro rakes run on broad-gauge tracks but the overhead power supply line needs to be replaced with a third rail,” said an official involved with the project. The elevated tracks will merge with the suburban line near Dum Dum Cantonment, providing passengers a viable option for reaching the city and its suburbs. Walkalators would be installed at Biman Bandar station and the airport to spare passengers the trouble of walking the distance with luggage. However, the availability of space has to be considered before the station can be relocated, airport officials pointed out. “The land availability near the terminal building has to be looked into before permission for shifting the station can be granted. A number of power sub-stations have been planned for the area,” said a senior airport official. The existing 3.8-km stretch, of which 2.8km is elevated, was commissioned on July 29, 2006, by the then railway minister Lalu Prasad. Eastern Railway had tried to popularise the service by increasing the number of trains to eight pairs a day but even that failed to increase footfall.“One of the main reasons why the suburban train service has not taken off is the elevated station. The distance from the terminal buildings doesn’t help either,” said a railway official.Under the new Rs 300-crore plan, Metro rakes will ply between Noapara and Biman Bandar. Passengers from northern and southern suburbs will have to change trains at Noapara.

Kolkata airport traditionally served as a strategic stopover on the air route from Europe to Indochina and Australia.[5] Many pioneering flights passed through the airport, including Amelia Earharts in 1937.[6] In 1924, KLM began scheduled stops at Calcutta, as part of their Amsterdam to Batavia (Jakarta) route.[7] The same year, a Royal Air Forceaircraft landed in Calcutta as part of the first round-the-world expedition by any air force.[8]The airport began as an open ground next to the Royal Artillery Armoury in Dum Dum.[9] Sir Stanley Jackson, Governor of Bengal, opened the Bengal Flying Club at Calcutta aerodrome in February 1929.[10] In 1930, the airfield was made fit for use throughout the year,[11] and other airlines began to utilise the airport. Air Orient began scheduled stops as part of a Paris to Saigon route,[12] and Imperial Airwaysbegan flights from London to Australia via Calcutta in 1933.[13] This began a trend that drew many airlines to Calcutta airport.Calcutta played an important role in the Second World War. In 1942, the United States Army Air Forces 7th Bombardment Group flew B-24 Liberator bombers from the airport on combat missions over Burma. The airfield was used as a cargo aerial port for the Air Transport Command, and was also used as a communication centre for the Tenth Air Force.[14]Passenger services grew after the Second World War. Calcutta became a destination for the world’s first jet-powered passenger aircraft, the de Havilland Comet, on a British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) route to London. Furthermore, in 1964 Indian Airlines introduced the first Indian domestic jet service, using Caravelle jets on the Calcutta–Delhi route.Between the 1940s and 1960s, the airport was served by several major airlines including Aeroflot,[15] Air France,[16] Alitalia,[17] Cathay Pacific,[18] Japan Airlines,[19] Philippine Airlines,[20] KLM, Pan Am,[21] Lufthansa,[22]Swissair[23] and SAS.[24]Due to the introduction of longer-haul aircraft and the poor political climate of Calcutta during the 1960s, several airlines discontinued their service to the airport. The 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War saw a large increase of both refugees and disease in Calcutta, causing more airlines to cease services to the city. In 1975, the airport opened the first dedicated cargo terminal in India.[5]In the early 1980s, plans emerged to connect the airport with the city center by tram. The proposed route went to the airport from Maniktala, via Vivekananda Road, Ultadanga and Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue. The line partly completed 1985, but further expansion to the airport was cancelled due to the financial downing of Calcutta Tramways Company. The extension proposal re-appeared in 1999, but was cancelled. The 1990s saw new growth for Calcutta airport, as the Indian aviation industry saw the arrival of new airlines such as Jet Airways and Air Sahara. A new domestic terminal was opened in 1995, and the airport was renamed in honour of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.[5] In 2000, a new international arrival hall was opened.

Dum Dum is a populated municipality under Barrakpore Commissionaire in north Kolkata. It comes under Barrackpore sub-division of the state of West Bengal. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority. It is one of the main entry points to the city of Kolkata, providing a number of transportation facilities into that city from the northwest, such as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, formerly Dum Dum Airport, which offers domestic and international flights
