In September 1886, after the death of Ramakrishna, when his devotees stopped funding, Swami Vivekananda (then known as Narendranath Datta) and other disciples of Ramakrishna decided to make a dilapidated house at Baranagar their new math.The house crumbled to dust in 1897. In 1973 Vivekananda Math Samrakshan Samity was formed who attempted to preserve the area. In 2001, the possession was handed over to Belur Math authority, who soon-after declared it as one of their official branch. The restoration and development work of the area is still going on.After the death of Ramakrishna on 16 August 1886, his devotees and admirers stopped funding. Many of his disciples showed inclination to return home and live Grihastha(family-oriented) life. The monastic disciples led by young Narendranath Datta understood the necessity to find out a new shelter. Narendranath and others decided to make dilapidated house at Baranagar the new math(monastery) for remaining disciples.The house belonged to a zaminder family of Taki, North 24 Parganas district.Surendra Nath Mitra, a devotee of Ramakrishna desired to pay the rent for the house.Narendranath and his guru bhais used to collect their daily food by holy begging (madhukari). The math became the first building of the Ramakrishna Math—the monastery of the monastic order of Ramakrishnab. Narendra later reminisced about the early days in the monastery.

The inmates of the Math had, by then, realised that the advent of Sri Ramakrishna was not for the sake of India alone, but for the entire humanity.It was at this first monastery that the tyagi disciples of Sri Ramakrishna ritualistically took sannyasa by viraja homa and from here Swamiji set out for his historic ‘Bharat Parikrama’ in 1889.Sri Ramakrishna realised the ultimate truth from varied religions through spiritual practices during His life time. “As many faiths, so many paths” – the fundamental spiritual dictum of Sri Ramakrishna, the Guru of Swami Vivekananda, was practised by the apostles at Baranagar Math through observing the teachings of Buddha, Mohammad, Jesus Christ and other great religious personalities. Swami Vivekananda preached the Universal Religion and propagated the great message of harmony and equal validity of all the religious faiths.

On August 16, 1886 Sri Ramakrishna Thakur passed away in cossipur garden house.His disciples are full of sorrow.Leader Naren however started to organize them in the monastic brotherhood.Whenever they couldnot stay cossipur then with the help of devotee Suredra Nath Mitra Naren rented a smaller house at Baranagar from land lord of Taki Sri Kali Nath Munshi.At first Hutko Gopal stayed here then Tarak,Buro Gopal-- Photograph of thakur Ramakrishna on the bedding used by him began to warshiped daily with flowers and burning inscense.They established the first Monastary of Ramakrishna Order(19th.October 1886).Swami Vivekananda and his fourteen brother disciples are lived here from 1886 to 1892 . (Rakhal,Tarak,Baburam,Sashi,Sarat,Gopal da,Sarada,Hari,latuGangadhar,Niranjan,Subodh, Kali andYogin).There were hardly enough clothes and food was not good and long day had nothing to eat but rice and boiled leaves.They thought only at God ,meditated by long hours,sang songs, discussed thereligious ideas of allsects and religious,tried to folow everything that Ramakrishna had tought them.Swami Vivekananda set out his historicalBharat Parikrama in the year 1889 from Baranagar Math.This Math is the place famous for long spiritual practice by the great Apostles of Sri Ramakrishna Dev.Devotees are come here . A small centre of ramakrishna mission with a glorious history. the first math of the order. very near to kashipur burning ghat & a short distance from alam- bazar math & kashipur udyanbati. devotees can visit all these and also holi mother & balaram boses house in baghbazar in a single day. all open daily from early morning (with a break from 11-30 am to 3-30/4 pm.) till 8 pm. in the evening.

After the passing away of Sri Sri Ramakrishna Dev, Swamiji and others took this house in rent and used to live together to fulfill Sadhana and the Ramakrishna Math & Mission took birth here in this Holy House.
