The place is under archaeological survey of india and has been beautifully maintained. The gates always remain locked, so one needs to ask the gatekeeper to enter. As it is a jewish worship place, boys are given a small hat(as worn by Jews) to be worn. The caretaker allows 10min for viewing the inside. There is also a place for donation.

This synagogue is an architectural splendor and a reminiscent of the rich Jewish history of Calcutta. The Maghen David Synagogue is not just a religious place, but also a popular tourist destination. It is frequently visited by foreign nationals from across the globe. To reach this place, you need to take any Howrah bound bus/cab and get down near the Portuguese Church. Its located exactly opposite to the Portuguese Church. To enter this beautiful Synagogue, you dont require tickets, but need to take permission from the security guard. He will open the main gate for you, check your government ID proof and will show you the way towards the Synagogue. As per the Jewish Culture, you need to wear the black Kippah after entering the Synagogue, which the caretaker will provide you. The ground floor is the praying zone, where you can sit and feel the calmness of the place. Its a huge area & the intricate carvings and designs on the walls will leave you speechless. You can also see some very tall fans and ceiling lights, which are hard to find in the current era. Now, after leaving the ground floor praying area, there is a staircase that leads you to the first floor. The first floor is the museum section of the Synagogue. Here, you will come across some exquisite paintings and articles pertaining to the history of Calcuttas Jews and this Synagogue in particular. Also, there is a balcony from where you can get a panoramic view of the whole synagogue. Do check out some of the photos shot by me. Highly recommended place to visit in the city of joy. 👍☺️

Love this place, I would ask every viewer, please go there and feel the taste of Jews culture, and few steps forward you would also find another small synagogue, but please carry a bottle of water in your bag, because the authority is not concerned about drinking water for the visitors. Thank you taste the syncretist culture of Calcutta... Thank you. Have a nice day.

The largest synagogue of Asia, this is one of the best places to experience the Jewish architecture at its best. Built twice and with 3 synagogues nearby it acts as a heritage for both Jews as well as calcuttans of all castes and creed. The magnificent stained glass windows are breathtakingly beautiful and are a sight to behold from inside on a good sunny day. The guides are very cooperative and have a nice treasure trove of information about the synagogue. Do visit the place whenever around this area, its a crowded place but the experience is worth it

We visited this on a Sunday afternoon around 4pm although youre better advised to visit this before 3pm. Non Jewish people are not allowed on Fridays and Saturdays as these 2 days Jewish rituals are mostly performed. You should carry a national identity proof like your Voter Card, Aadhar card, Pan card as they validate the same. Taking videos are prohibited although no restrictions are there to take photos. I did carry my DSLR and its allowed. Please be informed that you are allowed only for a timespan of 15 minutes at the most.

The synagogue was built in 1884 by  Elias David Ezra in memory of his father David Joseph Ezra, who made his fortune in the real estate trade of Kolkata. Elias David Joseph Ezra is associated with some of the well known buildings of Kolkata including Esplanade Mansion, Ezra Mansion and Chowringhee Mansion. Ezra Street is also named after him.The synagogue is built in the Italian Renaissance style with a brick red finish. Its a very beautiful architecture, and the only place to witness Italian Renaissance architecture in Kolkata.Loved it !!!
