Very nicely maintained palace.Very peaceful atmosphere. There is a courtyard also. More things still coming up..Staff is very helpful and kind..Not much crowded in the afternoon..A good place to visit....

Beautiful palace

The museum is laid out much in the manner of other musea in India: priceless artefacts presented with a mix of care and abandon. Hunting exploits of the Chatrapatis dominate. The durbar hall isnt quite as impressive as it is probably intended to be. Featured in an utterly non-descript way in exhibits that are a pointer to the sporting feats of the Kolhapur princely state is a certain VS Hazare (for cricket fans).A major downside is that the staff are utterly rude to all visitors and while one can make a concession for such an attitude being engendered by thoughtless tourists, it still doesnt justify uniform bullying and shepherding.All this is compensated for by a truly magnificent specimen of Indo-Saracenic architecture built in black, polished stone complete with onion domes and domed chhatris. This is housed in a garden that is home to a bevy of peacocks that make their presence felt with screams. It made for a wonderful sight during the rains in July when we were there.

Laxmi Vilas Palace is birth place of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur. He was the first Maharaja of Kolhapur. He was born to Ghatge family and was adopted by royal family. This place is recently renovated by State archaeology department. Also you can see various archaeological remains and artefacts and stone edicts.There is small replica of Radhanagari Dam here for visitors to see.But unfortunately the place is vacant from inside. Just few large life size paintings. Thats why I have given 3 stars. Government needs to put lots of efforts to make this place a happening one.
