Old church with quite striking exterior and bell towers. Nice to view from outside and you may respectfully visit inside too. There is always something sticking about seeing architecture that feels out of place. Peaceful and serene. A nice holy place to visit for all religions. Dont forget to go to the top of the church for a good view of the city.

Vallarpadam Basilica is one of the church which is known for its miracles. It was raised to the status of Basilica on 1st December 2004 by late Saint John Paul II. The Church has a good artitecture and the area is so peaceful. There is a good parking space for cars and bikes. There is also a very beautifully build 12 places representing way of cross. The area is large and that too gets full of cars once the celebration day comes like Christmas and Easter times.

Beautiful Basilica. The idea of sweeping the Basilica premises with a broom for prayers answered is interesting. The story of how the church came into being and how it has over the decades become an important place for the fisherfolk who believe in the divine powers of the deity here is a good piece of story to hear from the locals. The place is safe for families and solo travelers.

The National Shrine Basilica Of Our Lady of Ransom, situated at Vallarpadam , Ernakulam is a large pilgrimage centre and is one of the biggest Christian pilgrim centre of India. Located in the middle of Vallarpadam in Kerala, the Vallarpadam Church or the Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom is an ancient church and a very famous centre of pilgrimage in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. Its one of the oldest European Churches in India which was built by the Portuguese Missionaries in the year 1524. The church is dedicated to the Holy Mary of Vallarpadam which is commonly referred as Vallarapadath Amma. Though, it ruined due to heavy flood in the year 1676 but it was reconstructed in the year 1676. Then in the year 1888, it was declared as a special church by Pope Leo XIII and later the Union Government stated it as a major pilgrim centre. The history says that Vallarpadath Amma has saved her devotees life several times from violent storms.Feast of Vallarpadath Amma is conducted in the month of September 24 every year with pomp and gaiety. So, if you wanna explore a bit off beat, then do visit this place where you get the full combination of sightseeing, religion and folklore. The picture of Mary and Infant Jesus, installed at the top of the main altar of the Vallarpadam Church, was brought by Portuguese merchants under the leadership of Vasco da Gama in 1524. In 1676 the old Church, which was known as the Church of the Holy Spirit, founded by the Portuguese missionaries, was destroyed by a heavy flood, and the picture was found floating in the backwaters. Nobody except Paliyath Raman Valiyachan, the Prime Minister of Maharaja of Cochin, could recover it. The present church at Vallarpadamis built on land donated by Paliyath Raman Valiyachan. A sanctuary lamp which he donated has been burning day and night from 1676 onwards in his honour. In May 1752 a miracle is believed to have taken place which made Vallarpadam a centre of pilgrimage. In Vallarpadam there was a young Nair Lady named Meenakshi Amma, who was a member of a noble family called Palliyil Veedu. Together with her son she was sailing to Mattancherry. There arose a storm and the boat capsized. Meenakshi Amma and her son went deep down into the backwater. She promised to devote the rest of her life to Mary’s service if she and her child were saved. It was a promise she kept.On the third day, as per instructions in a dream, the parish priest asked the fishermen to cast net in the river, and Meenakshi Amma and her son were rescued. After her death, the church put up the picture of Meenakshiamma and her child alongside the painting of Mary.Nb: There is a lift which can be used to see the top view from the church where we can see a 360 degree view of the places surrounding the church which costs only 10 rupee per person

I liked visitng the place and I have visited plenty of churches like this. However I felt little detested with the kind of content published over there. Though its a story, the protagonist in the story is a Hindu family who finally got CONVERTED to a Christian, because she was to visit a temple and in between she met some with a boat accident where she was to die and then the church came in rescue for her and hence she lived as a slave to the church further on. There is still this ritual of being a slave at this church. However, my opinion was that the way it is published (that the lady was to visit a temple and then this accident happened) is definitely spreading a hatred in some or the other way.

I visited this church for the first time in the year 1997. It was then a small church mainly visited by fishermen who believed that if their child was blessed at this church, the child would never drown. Years later, the church became famous and now is a Basilica. The two new towers were added to the church building without altering the main structure. There is a new church built behind this Basilica. Underneath this new church is a source of sweat water, this water is consumed by faithful’s who believe that it has healing properties. At the entrance of this new church one can see four glass tiles which cover the source of this water. The water is then collected in a small well. People can collect this water and either consume or take it home. One should not miss the view from the top of the tower!
