East Indian Railway Company opened the Manihari–Katihar–Kasba section in 1888 and the North Bengal Railway opened the Katihar–Raiganj section the same year. The Barsoi–Kishanganj section opened in 1889. All these lines were 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in)-wide metre-gauge lines. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, operating 2 ft (610 mm) narrow-gauge lines, extended their operations from Siliguri to Kishanganj in 1915 and to Dalkhola.Siliguri was connected to Kolkata via the eastern part of Bengal since 1878 (for details see Howrah–New Jalpaiguri line). However, with the partition of India in 1947, railway services in the region were completely disrupted. In 1949, the narrow-gauge Siliguri–Kishanganj section was upgraded to metre gauge. Thus there was a direct metre-gauge connection from Manihari to Siliguri via Katihar.[1] The importance of Katihar station grew because of the jute mill in the region.

Its hudge big juction as compare to saharsa but need at least good canteen for eating on contol rates for needy people and one hall is not enough in the great rush , there should be waiting hall like guntakal station and if you are travelling alone never go outside alone midnight due to safety reason inside you are safe and secure than 4am easily you can take bus ,auto whatever!

Find it in a good position and very clean. Things all that you wanted on a railway station you find it here almost all . Very clean and well managed railway station , all the staff you seems here are on duty and do their own work. Informational annoucements about the trains arrival or departures are always go on and also you find it on the led boards that showing you the information. And lastly about this station is, it is very crowded place . Big thumbs up

Its one of the big railway stations in North Bihar. They station is well maintained and has all types of facilities. The station is well connected with other parts of Bihar. The entrance to the Station is quite huge and beautifully made. It is also clean and well taken care of.

One of the best serving railway station of North East Frontier Railways (NFR), The cleanliness level is also good, the availability of train throughout all the neighbouring states and aslo tp the other parts of states such as Maharastra, Karnataka, Gujrat, Delhi, Punjab, etc.This station is also well organised with their time table of Local trains where a person wants to visit either directions such as towards Jogbani, towards Radhikapur, towards siliguri, towards Sonpur, Samistipur, Tejnarayanpur, Telta or even Patna...There are total of 7 platforms in this station where generally all the express trains and local trains are covered under platform 1 to 5 whereas platform number 6 & 7 are generally dedicated to Freight trains.Most of the trains are coming and going through Katihar are either destinated towards Guwahati or Agartala.

Nice clean station in Behar. Lots of trains leave from katihar station. But lack of security found in this station. Less number of TC and rpf seen in this station. Overall station is good maintain by authority. There is only one washing room at station no. 2.

Under maintenance. Thats why everything looks hazy hazy..I visited here after 6 years many views changed like the engine outside for the figure of station is today upside down,but one thing that is maintained today is its pink color in night, it makes the scenery as an historical monument...

In the early 1960s, when Farakka Barrage was being constructed, Indian Railways took the initiative to extend 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in)-wide broad gauge rail link from Kolkata.The 2,240 m (7,350 ft) long Farakka Barrage carries a rail-cum-road bridge across the Ganges.The rail bridge was opened in 1971 thereby linking the Barharwa–Azimganj–Katwa loop to Malda, New Jalpaiguri and other railway stations in North Bengal.Gauge conversion work (from metre gauge to broad gauge) in the Barauni–Katihar section was taken up in 1978–79 and completed in 1982.The Siliguri–Katihar line was the last surviving metre-gauge line in the area.The Aluabari Road–Katihar section already had a broad-gauge line running alongside the metre-gauge line.The Aluabari Road–Siliguri section needed to be converted. Conversion work was taken up in 2008, train services in the section was suspended and conversion work completed early in 2011.

This is a important station under north Forntier Railway. The division head is sitting here all the train going towards north eastern states must stop at katiharjn. The train to Jogbani near Birat Nagar ( Nepal) is running from this station only. Nice neat and clean railway station with 24 hrs transit facility. Round a clock RPF & GRP security is available.

Its a relatively large station with all the necessary amanities but you won’t find any luxuries in here. It just serves the purpose with some basic ingredients needed to board and deboard your train.There is a certain buzz around the station which some people love while others might find very annoying. You have great opportunities to indulge in some book shopping as there are plenty of book and magazine shops on almost all the platforms.The food is typically indian snacks with some north indian stuff thrown in between. There are some good juice shops on platform 1 and 2. The fruit shops are all nicely stockd and prices are quite good.The cleanliness although better than some other stations is below par, so you might have to think twice before relieving your bladder.
