I WOULD LIKE IF COURSES ARE STILL GOING ON. I AM INTERESTED IN TAKING A COURSE MARCH NEXT YEAR (2022). IS THERE FUTURE COURSES IN MARCH 2022?I am trying to send an email but the website wont allow me. i dont know how to contact them...
Very special place where westerners have the opportunity to take courses on Buddhism in a functioning monastary. Perched on the top of a hill, overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, the setting is so well suited for retreats. You have a little distance from the whiz and whir of Kathmandu whilst also never loosing sight. I took 3 short courses over a month and enjoyed each and every one. Teachers are very knowledgeable, the content is scheduled well, meals are varied and delicious and the accommodation is also very comfortable. Highly recommended.
A beautiful and large Tibetan Buddhist monastery situated at a picturesque hilltop. People across the world comes to study Buddhism and some for retreat purposes!
Oh what an incredible experience it is to visit this beautiful monastery. We were fortunate to visit when a puja (ceremony) was taking place. The temple was filled with monks and nuns chanting. The sound being played over loud speakers was just magical. We visited Kopan via an arranged tour which included spending a couple of hours with a senior monk. An added bonus was the view of Kathmandu Valley.
The Introductionary Course (10 days) was a life shaping experience for me. I learned a lot (mainly about myself), studied and practiced meditation and came out of the place as a better person (in my perspective). The course is well organized and structured, the teachers are great, the food is good (vegetarian) and the rooms are nice (exept for the pillows, maybe you can bring your own).I highly recommend this experience for anyone who wants to get a different perspective of things and to get to know themselves better.
I came to learn more about Buddhism and left feeling more self aware. Met amazing people. I stayed at Kopan for the duration of the course, 4 nights. I would bring healthy snacks such as fruits if you like to eat more frequently otherwise food is served 3 times a day. Also, there is a cafe that serves good filtered coffee and food. I liked the bookstore/library, things are reasonably priced compared to Thamel. Also, dont forget your towel, soap and toilet paper if you use it. Great place to learn.
One of the citys most important monasteries, what you should know before visit it:- It is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery.- Is fare away from downtown, but taxi is not expensive, about 700-900 nrp (download offline the map, the road is a laberint).- Amazing panorama view of Kathmandu.- Free entrace.- There are a market and souvenir shop inside.- The monastery has become especially famous for teaching Buddhism to visiting Western foreigners.- Bring your snacks, there are benchs where sit and eat quitely.I recommend visit this place.
As read in our guide book this is the most welcoming monestary for foreigners. You get a visitor card at entrance. They seem to be ok with making photoes of the place although they dont allow photo as on monks which obviously make sense. The gate to monastery closes at 9pm.Although the doors to the temple inside are closed at 5pm.They have we cafe, and shop in which they sale handmade by monks/nuns sentence sticks.
Apparently Nepalese are only allowed inside on specific dates while their website says there is no restrictions.Tourist/foreigners are granted easy access without any hassle even if they arent a student.I went there only to be stopped at the gate by their guard and I was told I need to get a permission to enter. So I called the number provided on their website and the person said theres a course going on till 31st May so nobody is allowed entrance. I decided to head back only to notice a female tourist granted access( she wasnt a student there cause I talked with her and she was told to wear a shawl since her attire didnt match the religious code) I was shocked that a single Nepalese citizen wasnt allowed entrance while somebody else was granted easy access. I called them again and i was told that the person will talk with senior monks. After 5 minutes, senior monk came and said its not allowed. I told him what I just saw and whats the difference between me and female foreign tourist. After 5 minutes of going back and forth, couple of tourist came and they just waltz inside the gate( girl didnt went inside cause she was wearing short but the guy went inside)I just pointed my hand at the guy who just entered and only then I was finally granted entrance.I havs been to monastery/mosque/church/temples in various countries and never had I felt as an outsider while I was felt as an outsider in my own country.Buddha is peace. I dont know much about his teachings but I am certain he would not differentiate between two human beings.
I stayed 1 month for the November Course retreat and it was one of the most amazing experience Ive ever had. First, the place is gorgeous. Its higher than the city so the air is not polluted there. The Stupa gardens arebeautiful and colourful. Ive met some of the most amazing and kindest people there! Its the perfect place to forget about all of your worries and really focus on yourself in a meaningful way.I would definitely come back often if it wasnt so far from home.
It used to be much better place few years ago when visitors were allowed to visit the monastry once a week and now no visitors are allowed unless you know someone in there who can let you visit. But these days new buildings around the monastry has destroyed natural beauty of it. Still watching sunrise from the restaurant with big balcony and watching sunset from the top of a small hill in the monastry can easily win over your heart. The smell of the incense, the chantings and prayers, sojnd of Lama kids studying, refreshes your soul. The view of the garden is still better. You can enjoy a lot if you can get it for a visit.Situated at the top of a hill, you can have a pleasant view of kathmandu valley.
It used to be my every saturday plan to visit there, during my childhood but recently because of some problems they are closed for publics except for specific reasons and purposes. I just love that place, every time I visit it makes me refreshed and helps me minimize my stress out. The best part is huge meditation hall.
Awesome..
Beautiful view, very calm and relaxing. I did a retreat there for 11 days and absolutely loved it. I would recommend it 100%. :)
✅
Peace।
KAPAN MONASTERYOne of the most popular monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism is the Kapan Monastery which is perched on a hill not far north of Boudha. Each year a large number of foreigners arrive here to study Buddhism and meditation. Kapan Monastery was founded by Lama Thubten Yeshe who died in 1984. Interestingly, a small Spanish boy named Osel Torres became his successor after he was declared a reincarnation of the great Lama. However, the reincarnation does not reside at Kapan anymore. The road is going on reconstruction.so that it takes a time . But it target for 2020 visit nepal. So the construction will be finished till Jun 2019
This is more of a retreat than a tourist stop. If youre just coming for the day, youll get some decent views of Kathmandu, but thats about it. Most places have a do not enter sign and the monastery itself is closed. At least there is no admission fee, but no idea why this is so highly rated.
45 minutes to get there by motorcycle taxi after reading the reviews here and then I got turned away by a security guard at the front entrance (the same gate as in the photos posted here, so I was at the right place). All my Nepali friends can rest assured that theyre now apparently equal-opportunity racists there :-D
Beautiful Monastery up on a hill overlooking the city. Not the easiest to get to but very peaceful and free to enter. Not really a tourist attraction, more of a place for retreats but if you have a free afternoon to relax on the garden up there, worth a visit.
Top of the world
It’s a nice and quite Buddhist place. You breath peace there. And you have an awesome landscape view of all Kathmandu city from there.
Good place to have a good time seeing the good city view but the road is bit offroad
Amazing view of 𝐊apan 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 over the rising clouds 😍😍
Loved it
Nice place
One of the most serene and relaxing places on the edge of Kathmandu Valley with wonderful views. The Buddhist monastery is meticulously maintained. It is highly recommended if you want to get away from the chaos of the Valley.
Definitely my most favorite place in Kathmandu. The Monastery also has an extensive library and beautiful garden. The Kopan cafe also has good coffee ☺️☺️☺️
Best place
Beautiful place
I walk there from my hotel every morning when i was in Nepal and i like the place and very clear Kathmandu valley view from This monastery.I really thanks the main Lama for the all see you again.
Its a best place to hangout for afternoon teaPlus the view of Amazing sunset makes your afternoon grateful#getyourselfchilled
As a much a learning center as it is a Tibetan monastery. Perched atop a hill overlooking the Kathmandu valley, this place offers some of the most interesting courses. Most of the teachers are Westerners who have taken refuge and have been practicing for decades. Ive done three courses and all of them have been extremely fulfilling experiences. Theres a library, a beautiful cafe, a general store inside the monastery. You can also go for a hike in the surrounding hills if you want to explore. The living arrangements are as good as it gets and you have several options to choose from.
Kapan Gumba is one of the monasteries in Kathmandu. Buddhist scriptures are read here. Accommodation is available for students here. Being close to Kathmandu, vehicles are easily available to reach this area. Citizens with disabilities can take helpers. From here you can see the breathtaking views of the Kathmandu Valley. The Boudha stupa and this place are very attractive when you see them face to face.
Awesome place to refresh your soul and your mind. Most visited place around the Kathmandu Valley.. Surrounded by greenery and decorated Buddhist ornaments and sculptures... Can learn the perfect meaning of life and nature. Please visit the site and find out peace for your heart.
Marvelous monasteryMind calming and relaxingNot so easy to reach the point, I travelled all the way with a motorcycle . Amazing views as it is in the top of hill.
Let me tell you once you go there your life will change me mentally and spirituality. The passion of people there. The classes the prayers the medications its just unbelievable. Not many people know about this place well its a blessing cause its better that way. Its keeps it quiet and peaceful.
Nice and well decorated. Would have been good if it was made more accessible to public.
Charming hillstation to get a amazing view of Kathmandu city with peace environment.
It is wonderful, as is the other Buddhist monastery in the fairytale opposite. The latter is difficult to access. Many worshipful Europeans are coming here who are hoping to learn Buddhism.
Peaceful
Really nice place with a great view. Ive been there many timesYou cant go inside the monastery but there is a walking way. Which is full of nature and its almost like walking in a peaceful world. Its great for a date or some time alone.
Great place with the highest number of monks in the country. Currently it has forbidden the visitors inside the compound. From the Monastery area you can see the whole Kathmandu Valley which is mesmerizing.
Nice place for a short teip around kathmandu
The place is hidden up on a very broken road. Not many people seemed to know about its whereabouts. A very peaceful, quiet and beautiful place with a good view.
Kopan has become especially famous for teaching Buddhism to visiting Western foreigners. Kopan Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery which is situated on the outskirts of Kathmandu, near Boudhanath.Kopan is a peaceful, calm and relaxing place to spend a few hours, days or weeks.
Great place for everybody looking for buddhist teachings. Wonderful location, incredible energy, great kitchen and very pleasant rooms for course participants. Kopan Monastery is world famous and there is a good reason for that. Cannot recommend enough!
Its a nice place to visit but the roads leading there is worst. They run meditation classes too for common people.
Amazing
Monastery is a place which is praised by the wise🙏 Because household life is full 🌝 of hassle, whereas a monastic life is full of peace ☮ In that, Kopan Monastery is a symbol of renunciation, peace and tranquility. Kopan Monastery is located in a beautiful location on top ⏫ of a hill overlooking Kathmandu Valley. Experience of enchanting nature will certainly gives joy 😁 to the visitors.
Nice view around but the monastery is closed for public since last 5-6 years. And opens only on buddha jayanti. I asked for the reason of closure to the public, they said many couples visited there. Being a ritual places activities seen were not acceptable.
Very cool place to enjoy peace of mind. I really liked sleeping at nights there and the morning clear visibility of surroundings, sound of birds, blue sky etc.
Kapan monastery is the big monastery of Kathmandu valley and this place is in height so this place is good for scenic and panoramic view. Nowadays we are not allowed to go inside allowed only for tourist. If someone want to go for meditation then it will be perfect for that person.
Nice views, calm place, worth a visit.Road to Monastery is bad but once you reach, you can enjoy good views of the city, relax a bit in the monastery or in the garden/cafe. You can also plan well and join some of their programs
Such a peaceful place.definitely on my recommendation
Nice monastery overlooking Kathmandu from the mountains.Try to go when special Moon occurs as the prayers seem nice to watch or join.Western Buddists taking time to study or meditate
Love this place. Peaceful and relaxing place to enjoy an afternoon. Check out the cafe too!
Because there are many religeous place
Beautiful and peaceful, with lovely gardens. We didnt need more than a couple of hours to look around.
Got rejected at the entry.Reason: You didnt book the 1 month retreat.Better make it a hotel then.
Didnt feel very good about the ambiance... felt more commercial than spiritual. Would not recommend since its little far and you got to theough hell of traffic of katmandu
This place is absolutely amazing and so serene. I also love their milk tea.
One of the best place to learn Buddhism and meditation techniques. Food is great and rooms are comfortable. Price is very affordable.
When it comes to peaceful environment, it gives you a different experience from inside which is best in my viewpoint.
