Astonishing place!!!! It’s more than just “beautiful, nice, pretty”. It is breathtaking! The best time to visit the monasteries is sunset. First, there won’t be that much people. Second, the sun won’t kill you. And finally, the buildings and mountains are amazing in the sunset light!

Every day of the week a monastery is closed, by rotation. the visiting schedule is until 16 Oclock. The rest is amazingly beautiful. The constructions prove once again what being one can do. Spirituality feels extraordinary at sunset, when the number of visitors is considerably lower.

Meteora was an amazing experience. Both beautiful as well as hard to believe that monks lived in the monasteries built into the rock walls.I recommend a tour guide if you decide to visit so they can explain thoroughly the history. We went with “Visit Meteora”

The stone spires and cliffs that this region is known for certainly dont disappoint and absolutely live up to the hype. It is impossible to grasp the sheer awe you feel when looking out off the balcony of a monastery over the near-endless expanse of mountains and plains below you. I highly recommend making a detour here just to see these sights.

Is not like this place needed another review but...Despite the greatness of this place, I would like to see all the monasteries open. More than that, the biggest one it was more restricted to visit that few years ago :(Nonetheless it is worth visiting if you are in the area (in Greece I mean).Allow yourself at least one full day because some of the monasteries are closed most of the time. You can visit some in the morning and some on the evening.Bring some good camera, is worth it!Tip: relax and try to fill the divinity!

There is simply no place like Meteora. The area is beautiful the structures amazing and you can spend countless hours in monasteries and surrounding areas looking at culture and nature coexist in harmony. The roads there are nice but can be very narrow. Several stops are located all around to see the sites up close and from a distance. It is worth the trip from anywhere in Greece to see. It is truly unique.

Definitely worth it. So much history. The view is breathtaking! The monasteries are beautiful inside out. You can buy souvenirs and visit their mini museums. MEN should wear pants and WOMEN are asked to cover their arms with scarves and wear long skirts or pants. But when youre not in those monasteries you can wear what you want. Be ready to do a lot of stairs! Stay hydrated.

Meteora and the monasteries are amazing - such a stunning mixture of nature and architecture. Most of the monasteries can be reached by foot (It takes aproximately 30 minutes or an hour to walk up there). Suggest you ask locals where the paths are situated. The paths go through the woods mostly and hence the trees protect againt the heat providing shadow..

Amazing views! Great scenery! Many churches are free to visit, but some of them may charge entrance fee (which they don’t mention). My advice is to avoid these, they get enough already from candle donations. Why so greedy..You get to experience most of the area by moving around the road, and stop at different points for some nice pictures.

A trip full of spirituality, the time to find yourself, know yourself and know what you want. In Meteora you will also have the opportunity to admire, to know about religion, history, which is more interesting each time the trip progresses. You will see the wonder of nature and will be part of the architecture of the place. Without a doubt, a very interesting and magical adventure. In the center of Greece, specifically in Meteora, some wooden structures that were clinging to the rocks of the place were built in the 11th century , and with the passage of time they began using the caves that were excavated in the eroded rocks. All of this was part of a plan by the devout hermits to obtain more solitude and isolation from the rest, in order to have the peace they were looking for.

Magnificent place. We had one day only, so we went to see both sunrise and sunset, the light is very different and is worth it (there are two rocks where the view is amazing, one can google them by the best photo locations in Meteora). If you would like to enter some of the monasteries, please check their schedule. All 6 of them have different close days and visiting hours. By the way, if you like cats please take something for them, they like to be fed 🙂

Probably the best rock formations I’ve ever seen in my life. The ace art is absolutely breathtaking. You feel so small on top of these rocks. There are 6 monasteries still active. The small one in the middle is the coolest in my opinion. The most photogenic one is the second from the left (when facing the town bellow). Bring water, and a towel, cause you’ll sweat going from rock to rock (if you like to get adventurous)

The most breathtaking place ever. I met my guide by the train station. And we book him on getyourguide. He was very knowledgeable! I loved every minute of it and we exchanged a nice conversation about greeks vs americans about life. And honestly I would much rather live like a greek which is all about enjoying life. Also for women wear something appropriate for the monastery (long skirt and no midriffs and cover your shoulders). Men wear pants that go over the knee or you’ll need to pay €2 for some uncomfortable non-breathable pants.

If youre into hiking, this is a great place to train yourself under some pretty defiant conditions: uphill, facing 30°C. Thats not for everyone thats for sure, but you can still reach each monastery by car (the front gate, that is, you still have to walk your way upstairs). Going by foot feels like a pilgrimage, its exhausting but you get to admire all such wonderful scenes with no time limit, step by step.To be frank, the monasteries look rather similar among themselves (I visited all 6). The ones I (personally) found less interesting were the Holy Trinity and St. Nicholas. All other 4 are gorgeous. Each monastery you climb feels like a great achievement. If you want to really enjoy your visit and the magnificent views, Id recommend to spend at least one night in Meteora. In that way youll manage to see the monasteries (either the top 4 or all 6). Dont get dazzled by the day-trip from Athens offer. I think you only see stuff in rush and with no real time of your own enjoyment. Locals are super friendly! Spend the night here and not in Athens.

One, if not THE, most impressive areas I have ever been to. The landscape itself is already unique, but the fact that they have built the monasteries on top of the pillars in the 14th century is just incredible. We travelled there by car and had no issues with finding parking spaces near each monastery, neither was it too packed. It was a really relaxed trip. Only important note that is not written anywhere: in the monasteries are toilets, but it is only these toilets that are on floor level, where you stand above. This is for women quite unhandy and you should know about that. I recommend to visit a toilet in the city of Kalambaka or Kastraki, before you drive up to the monasteries. The monasteries itself are differently designed but all are really beautiful to visit. The streets up and down the mountains are in good condition, so it should be no problem to access it by car. This place is a must-see if you are anywhere near in Greece!!

Review №96

Nice views and nice place. But Im not a big fan of religious hypocrisy. You could see the accumulation of wealth in these Monasteries and they have opening hours whereas outside these hours they close up the whole territory around the monasteries. Ive always thought religion is for the people but apparently religion is only for the monks who pretend to be poor and humble but in fact they are wealthy and live in their own empire.
