Mehrangarh Fort is the best tourist places in Jodhpur city, as it is the most explored one by the tourists that visit Jodhpur. It hence tops the list of places to see in Jodhpur. This royal abode, earlier was one of the most majestic palaces in this city and is now turned into a museum that depicts the rich culture and heritage of Jodhpur. It is one among the largest forts in the country and accommodates several mahals within it.

Nestled atop a hill, at a height of 410 feet above the city of Jodhpur, Mehrangarh Fort stands as a majestic citadel of colossal proportions. Also known as Mehran Fort, it boasts of a history of more than 550 years and is surrounded by imposing walls. It is one of the largest forts in the country and is among the most formidable ones in Rajasthan. While the fort itself is an ode to Rajputana grandeur and architectural brilliance, the view it offers of the Jodhpur city spreading out below is no less impressive either. It’s not a surprise that the grand Mehran Fort is a prime attraction for travelers while planning a trip and booking rooms in the hotels in Jodhpur.

Mehrangarh, also known as Mehran Fort was built by Rao Jodha in 1459 in Jodhpur, is one of the largest forts in the country. It is situated at the top of a 410 feet elevated hill and guarded by massive walls. One of the most easily recognisable forts in Jodhpur, it has appeared in many Hollywood and Bollywood productions such as The Lion King, The Dark Knight Rises, and the more recent - Thugs of Hindostan. The entrance of the fort, atop a hill, is majestic and has seven gates. These are called Victory Gate, Fateh Gate, Gopal Gate, Bhairon Gate, Dedh Kamgra Gate, Marti Gate and finally Loha Gate. Each of these was built at different times and serves a very specific purpose. While one still has marks of cannon balls being hit on it, the other has spikes that can protect it from elephant and animal attacks. However, Victory Gate was built to commemorate the win of Maharaja Man Singh over Jaipur and Bikaner armies. The fort also has opulent palaces such as the Sheesh Mahal (Glass Palace) and Phool Mahal (Rose Palace). The intricate carvings on the walls of the fort, the sprawling courtyards, its impressive history, striking palaces, museums and galleries allure tourists from all over the world. The fort also has one of the well-stocked museums of Rajasthan. There are six different galleries in the Mehrangarh Museum: Elephants howdahs, Palanquins, Daulat Khana, Armoury, Paintings and the Turban Gallery. National Geological Monument, Nagnecha Mataji Temple, Chamunda Temple and Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park are the tourist attractions in Mehrangarh Fort.

Mehrangarh Fort is the biggest fort in India and covers an area of 1,200 acres (486 hectares) in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The complex is located on a hilltop around 122 metres above the surrounding plain[1], and was constructed circa 1459 by Rajput ruler Rao Jodha. Inside its boundaries there are several palaces known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards, as well as a museum housing various relics. A winding road leads to and from the city below. The imprints of the impact of cannonballs fired by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate. To the left of the fort is the chhatri of Kirat Singh Soda, a soldier who fell on the spot defending MehrangarhThere are seven gates, which include Jayapol (meaning victory gate), built by Maharaja Man Singh to commemorate his victories over Jaipur and Bikaner armies. There is also a Fattehpol (also meaning victory gate), which commemorates Maharaja Ajit Singhji victory over Mughals. Some of the notable festivals taking place here include the World Sacred Spirit Festival and Rajasthan International Folk Festival

Jodhpur marks its origin back to the year of 1459 AD. The history of this prosperous city revolves around the Rathore clan. Rao Jodha, the chief of Rathore Clan is credited with the origin of Jodhpur in India. The city is known to be built in place of the ancient capital, Mandore of the state of Manwar. Hence, the people of Jodhpur and surrounding areas are commonly known as Marwaris. Also, it is believed that the relics of Mandore can still be witnessed in the Mandore Gardens.

The Mehrangarh Fort viewpoint at Singhoria Hill looks back over the desert landscape and provides the best view of the fort in the distance. This viewpoint is lesser-known to tourists so you’ll be able to enjoy the stunning views all to yourself. The viewpoint is located at Singhoria Hill which is just a short 10 minute walk from the fort itself. You can also reach the fort by walking from the city which will take you roughly 15 minutes. From Mehrangarh Fort you’ll notice a hill in the distance with stairs leading up it. Follow the road past the carpark and you’ll reach the bottom of the stairs located just beside the main road. The stairs lead up to the rocks where you can climb around. You can explore the area yourself to find the best view of the landscape. Additionally, you can head up to the fort wall for some views overlooking the other side.

This viewpoint is a part of the guided tour of the Mehrangarh Fort. The breathtaking view of all the blue coloured rooftops of the houses in the city down below from here is unusual. That amply justifies the name a blue-city.That paint maintains the homes cool even in the sweltering weather of the desert. But, at the same time, the unplanned & disordered distribution of the dwellings also becomes apparent in the composition.

Dont go for the Audio Guide as it is outdated and does not fully capture the beauty of the fort.Tip: ask the guide to be patient and take atleast 2 hrs to complete the tour. Always ask questions in his explanations and ask for a guide who has worked as an employee at the fort earlier.

Seems to be the main attraction of Jodhpur: Luckily, despite visiting during the usually swelteringly hot month of May, getting there during the morning proved to be a wise decision as it is somewhat cooler then. It opens at 9am, which isn’t that early to be honest, but the foreigner ticket price does at least include an audio guide available in foreign languages such as English, Spanish, and even Korean (a passport suffices as a bond for the audio guide set). The audio guide is very detailed and fairly interesting and takes you round the various parts of the fort. Some great views can be taken in from the fort of the “Blue City” below. All in all, I would recommend this fort to anyone visiting Rajasthan, however one night in the city is likely enough, since (perhaps owing to it being low season) I didn’t find much else to do - or even many cafes or restaurants open - in Jodhpur during my visit.
