The structure is no doubt a magnificent piece of art, but more of the palace needs to be opened for visitors. Maybe high value tickets can be sold for those parts separately. There are people who want to see the palace in its entirety.

I love this place very much and its a quite good place to have visit. There we have a museum open for public visit and for that you have to buy a ticket for 30 INR ( Oct 2021 ) . Where you have see the history of royal family and they also offer vintage car showcase. These cars are more than 100 years old and still in use. In this property 70% property is owned by Taj group and its a 5 Star hotel and one of the top luxurious place to stay in jodhpur.

A truly royal experience. The staff were professional, well trained, courteous and willing to cater to your every need and request. The food was amazing, the buffet spread was decent with options from different cuisine. Both indoor and outdoor pools were closed due to Covid restrictions but the spa was available. We really had a really great time.

Umaid Bhawan Palace is the most well maintained palace I have been to. The royal family resides in the palace and almost half of the palace is managed by the Taj group as a luxury hotel. Hence, a very small portion is actually accessible to visitors. The staff volunteers as guides, and is very courteous and helpful. Dont miss the insight into the building of the palace and all the associated objects, arms, clothing, etcCan be completed within 20-30 minutes. Also see the antique car collection and especially the all silver rolls Royce!

JODHPURA DELIGHTFUL BLEND OF THE MODERN AND THE TRADITIONALJodhpur, the second largest city in Rajasthan is popularly known as the Blue City. The name is clearly befitting as most of the architecture – forts, palaces, temples, havelis and even houses are built in vivid shades of blue. The strapping forts that tower this magnificent city sum up to a spectacle you would not want to miss. The mammoth, imposing fortress of Mehrangarh has a landscape dominating a rocky ridge with the eight gates leading out of the fortress. The new city is located outside the structure. Jodhpur is also known for the rare breed of horses known as Marwari or Malani, which are only found here.Jodhpur marks its origin back to the year of 1459 AD. The history of this prosperous city revolves around the Rathore clan. Rao Jodha, the chief of Rathore Clan is credited with the origin of Jodhpur in India. The city is known to be built in place of the ancient capital, Mandore of the state of Manwar. Hence, the people of Jodhpur and surrounding areas are commonly known as Marwaris. Also, it is believed that the relics of Mandore can still be witnessed in the Mandore Gardens.

The Making of Umaid Bhawan PalaceThe history of building the Umaid Bhawan Palace is linked to a curse by a saint who had said that a period of drought would follow the good rule of the Rathore Dynasty. Thus, after the end of the about 50-year reign of Pratap Singh, Jodhpur faced severe drought and famine in the 1920s for a period of three consecutive years. The farmers of the area, faced with this hardship, sought the help of the then Maharaja, Umaid Singh, who was the 37th Rathore ruler of Marwan  at Jodhpur, to provide them with some employment so that they could survive the harsh conditions. The Maharaja, in order to help the farmers, decided to build a lavish palace. He commissioned Henry Vaughan Lancaster  as the architect to prepare the plans for the palace; Lanchester was a contemporary of Edwin Lutyens, who had planned the buildings of the New Delhi government complex. Lanchester patterned the Umaid Palace on the lines of the New Delhi building complex by adopting the theme of domes and columns. The palace was designed as a blend of western technology and Indian architectural features. The palace was built at a slow pace as its initial objective was to provide employment to the famine-stricken farmers in the area. The foundation stone was laid in 1929. About 2,000 to 3,000 people were employed in its construction. Occupation of the palace by the Maharaja came after its completion in 1943, and close to the period of Indian Independence. There was some criticism for embarking on an expensive project but it had served the main purpose of helping the citizens of Jodhpur to face the famine situation. The estimated cost of building the palace was Rs  11 million. When it opened in 1943 it was considered one of the largest royal residences in the world.Umaid Bhawan Palace as seen from Mehrangarh FortThe site chosen for the palace was on a hill known as Chittar hill in the outer limits of Jodhpur, after which the palace is also known, where no water supply was available nearby and hardly any vegetation grew as hill slopes were rocky. The building material required was not close by as sandstone quarries were at quite a distance. Since the Maharaja had the foresight to bring his project to fruition, he built a railway line to the quarry site to transport the building material. Donkeys were inducted to haul soil to the site. The sandstone transported by rail was dressed at the site into large blocks with interlocking joints so that they could be laid without the use of mortar. The palace was built with dun-coloured (golden – yellow) sandstone with two wings. Makrana marble has also been used, and Burmese teak wood has been used for the interior woodwork. When completed the palace had 347 rooms, several courtyards, and a large banquet hall which could accommodate 300 people. The architectural style is considered representing the then in vogue Beaux Arts style, also known as Indo-Deco style. However, for many years the palace did not fully function following tragic events in the royal family. Umaid Singh who stayed in the place for only four years died in 1947. Hanwant Singh  who succeeded him also died at a young age; he had just won in the 1952 General Elections  and was returning home after this win when his plane crashed and he died. Gaj Singh 2 who succeeded his father then decided in 1971 to convert a part of the palace into a hotel

“This museum is the highlight of my Maine trip. Using the Native voice as the primary on, its stories really touch the heart. The philosophies such as “Time is not linear, the past is the present and the present is the future”, and “Man was created to take care of Earth” show us a life filled with deep wisdom and understanding we must change the way we look at indigenous communities and respect and support them. This museum is a beautiful tribute to the Native man.”
