Very satisfying trip. about 20km from Jodhpur. Owner described the process quite well, describing how they prepare the yarns and colours. Very hospitable too. We went there without a prior appointment, yet were welcomed quite warmly! very quite and peaceful setting. A nice place to spend an hour or so. Ended up buying 3 durries too!
Amazinggggg experience 😍 they are trying very hard to keep the tradition alive. Explained everything very nicely. Had the best food and the best people, a must do
I visited Salawas Village as I had heard about the Durry cooperative, what I found was a hive of activity and a homestead of traditional mud and dung huts beautifully painted. These round thatched homes were both inviting and very comfortable and whilst you stayed there you were able to learn the skill of weaving on floor looms using a variety of materials ranging from camel wool, cottons, silks and hemp and how to cook traditional village food, I wish I had known about this earlier! The weavers make amazing rugs in a variety of sizes and as one would expect in Rajasthan using wonderful colours. Chai was made, the best if had tasted, whilst I looked at rugs. I knew I wanted one and was stuck for colour combinations and was really glad that I was able and privileged to purchase one. 49 families belong to this cooperative and each rug sold gives 75% to the families that make them, so definitely worthwhile in a state that has some of the poorest peoples in it. From there I was taken to a local potter who uses a two hundred kilo weight stone wheel propelled by a stick to make pots, all perfect and then onto a block printing family. If you are in the area please support this group of enterprising friendly people they really do deserve your support and bring back a rug, tiny oil lamp and block printed tablecloth!
The weaving here is incredible. Pieces can take well over a month to complete. Considering this, the prices are very reasonable. Thank food here is wonderful. It is not like the food in the city, it is homemade and has very good flavour. We also watched the food being prepared. I recommend this place very highly to anyone visiting Jodhpur. Om is a fantastic guide and explained the processes very helpfully.
Good but not so well!
We went there at Salawas in Nov 2015 . We purchased one rug and brought it back to my home . They were very nice and hospitable to us during our visit . Even we had lunch with them . Using the rug since then everyday . It is nice beautiful and tough . I would recommend them to everyone without any hesitation . Go for them .
Beautiful and well made Indian carpets in all sizes and colors; a great place to visit and experience. Highly recommended.
Interlocked weaving amazing..........
I visited them twice and bought 3 cotton carpets which are durable. I love the vivid color and tribal & modern patterns. The hospitality of owners are also kept in my mind. Wanna go back again and see my old friends there.....
This is firm no. In retrospect I let them rip me off. By their tour which isnt really about their manufacture, but telling short stories (20 mins?) focusing on selling you their carpets and taking you to other factories for the commission. If you are a tourist the usual 5x price is - of course - applied here.Just pass on this one.
Nice place where You wont expect it to be. Nice hosts and good english speaking. They take care of all you need. Ah, and homemade food is really good.
To be able to interact with the actual dhurrie makers and the act of being made was a great experience.
Its interesting to see the process of hand weaving a darri , one has to see it to realise how much time and effort goes into that beautiful rug on ur apartment floor !We sat under the shade of a neem tree after going thru the Dusty lanes and even the highway to look at some of the most colourful pieces of art .Call the number available , for fixing up and telling them you would want to visit . They will even send a bike rider to guide u , if u get lost in one of the bylanes .
A remarkable combination of cuisine and art. Takes us back to our roots, an overall and holistic experience for people who wish to truly visit the heart of RJ
