Chamunda Mataji Temple is located at the southern end of the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur. The idol of Devi Chamunda Mataji was brought to the fort in the year 1460 by Rao Jodha as the goddess was his favourite. The idol was earlier based at Mandore. Soon after the idol was installed in the famous temple in Mehrangarh Fort, that was dedicated to Devi Chamunda Mataji. Even in the current times the royal families of Rajas and the Maharajas considers Devi Chamunda Mataji as the ‘Isht Devi” or the adopted goddess of their families. Devi Chamunda Mataji is a deity who is popularly worshiped even by the common people of Jodhpur. The occasion of Dussehra sees a huge mass of devotees who visits this fort and the temple offering prayers
Chamunda Devi TempleThe chamunda Mataji was Rao Jodhas favorite goddess, he brought her idol from the old capital of Mandore in 1460 and installed her in Mehrangarh (Maa chamunda was the kul devi of the Pratihara rulers of Mandore. Mehrangarh (which is the gateway to the Gayatri Shaktipeeth Shri Chamunda Mata temple) is a very beautiful and well maintained fort overlooking the whole of Jodhpur and showing a lot of the city’s history. After paying the entrance fee you’ll be let in to the fort. A ticket for foreigners is ₹600 (or ₹400 for students) and includes an audio tour, unfortunately the device doesn’t come with headphones and you’ll have to walk around holding it against your ear for a few hours. The museum is beautiful, clean and really well maintained, especially if you compare it to other museums and exhibition rooms in India. The fort it self is an architectural masterpiece, especially considering the time it was build. After visiting the fort and the museum you can make your way true the garden and visit the temple, which will give you the absolute best view on the blue city.

Chamunda Mata Raj Rajeshwari is a form of Tripurasundari. There is a legend behind the name of mother Chamunda. The origin story of mothers name is described in Durga Saptashati.Thousands of years ago, according to the Goddess Mahatmya named Durgasaptashati, two demons named Shumbh and Nishumbh were ruling the earth. They had done a lot of atrocities on earth and heaven. As a result, gods and humans went to the Himalayas and worshiped Goddess Bhagwati. But did not take the name of any goddess in praise. After this, Goddess Parvati, wife of Shankar ji came there to take a bath at Man Sarovar. She asked the deities who are you worshiping? Then the deities became silent but because the form of Bhagwati was recognized. So even Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva do not know. Then how can Indradi Devta tell who he is, so he became silent. But Mother Bhagwati appeared from the body of Goddess Parvati and told Parvati, Goddess, these people are mine Praising. I am the Supreme Soul in the form of Atma Shakti, who resides in everyones soul.Due to the manifestation of Parvati from the body, one of the names of Maa Durga was also known as Koshiki. The messengers of Shumbha and Nishumbha saw Koshiki and said to both of them, Maharaj, you are the king of the three worlds. You have all the priceless gems adorned here. Indras Airavat elephant is also with you. For this reason you should also have such a divine and attractive woman who is the most beautiful in all the three worlds. Hearing this word, Shumbha and Nishumbha sent a messenger to Goddess Koshiki and told that messenger that you should go and tell that beauty that Shumbha and Nishumbha are the kings of all the three worlds and they both want to make you their queen. Hearing this, the messenger went to Mata Koshiki and narrated the words spoken by both the demons to the mother. Mother said that I believe that both Shumbh and Nishumbh are great forces. But I take a vow since I will marry the person who will defeat me in battle. The messenger told all these things to Shumbha and Nishumbha. So both of them got angry on hearing the words of Koshiki and said that this womans audacity to challenge us for war. Then he sent two demons named Chand and Mund and said that grab his hair and bring it to us. Chanda and Munda went to Devi Koshiki and asked her to accompany them. When the goddess refused, he attacked the goddess. Then Goddess Kaushiki assumed the form of black on one side of her forehead with her obedience and saved the demons and brought Chand and Mund to her own abode. Because of killing both of those demons, the name of the mother was Chamunda. In spirituality, Chand is the name of Pravarti and Mund Nivarti and Mother Bhagwati liberates the soul from both Pravarti and Nivarti and gives salvation. Thats why Jagadambas name is Chamunda.
One of the famous temples of Rajasthan, this Gayatri Shaktipeeth is also the temple of Chamunda Mata which is a grand temple located in Mehrangarh Fort. There is a crowd of visitors here.Everyone who comes to see the fort comes here to visit.
