It was one great experience, must visit. One of the best Muslim sights. There is real ancient history there that you can see with your naked eyes and touch with your hands and feel with your sole.

Al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the rock and its history: a major part of Jerusalem. You must stand there to feel the history: irrespective of your religion. Its a mind-blowing experience.Now on the visit, if you are Muslim, then just go and visit. Lots of entry gates. If not, then except Friday and Saturday, you will have small windows to visit (morning and noon). The only entry gate is located just right side of the entrance gate of the western wall from Dung gate. This entrance is bit tricky to locate (and again, just right side of the western wall entrance from the Dung gate). The security people and others inside the place are courteous and helpful. You can take pictures, walk around and see the Jerusalem from all angles. Just go and feel the place. Dont miss it.

The mosque was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 746 and rebuilt by the Abbasid caliph al-Mansur in 754. It was rebuilt again in 780. Another earthquake destroyed most of al-Aqsa in 1033, but two years later the Fatimid caliph Ali az-Zahir built another mosque whose outline is preserved in the current structure. The mosaics on the arch at the qibla end of the nave also go back to his time.During the periodic renovations undertaken, the various ruling dynasties of the Islamic Caliphate constructed additions to the mosque and its precincts, such as its dome, facade, its minbar, minarets and the interior structure. When the Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099, they used the mosque as a palace and the Dome of the Rock as a church, but its function as a mosque was restored after its recapture by Saladin in 1187. More renovations, repairs and additions were undertaken in the later centuries by the Ayyubids, Mamluks, Ottomans, the Supreme Muslim Council, and Jordan. Today, the Old City is under Israeli control, but the mosque remains under the administration of the Jordanian/Palestinian-led Islamic Waqf.

Despite all the coverage and negativity on the media. I was blown away when I reached there. All the locals are so welcoming and very hospitable. Al-Masjid El-Aqsa is an Arabic name which means the Farthest Mosque. To understand its name, and its importance, it must be remembered that the roots of Islam began in the Arabian Peninsula (currently KSA). Ten years after the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) received his first revelation, he made a miraculous night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem. During his interval in Jerusalem, the Prophet stopped to pray at the rock (now covered by the golden Dome), and was given the commandment to pray five times a day. Today, Muslims throughout the World use Mecca as the direction of prayers (Qibla). However, for 16½ months following the Prophet Mohammads miraculous journey, Jerusalem was the Qibla. There are 11 gates to Al-Aqsa Mosque: 7 of which are open. Of the 4 closed gates, one is the Golden Gate. The walls stretch for 12 miles over an area with a diameter of 2.5 miles and rise to an average height of 40 feet, and a width of more than 7 feet. It is inspiring, of course, to be on the Temple Mount. I arrived early and had the grounds nearly to myself for 15 minutes, because tour groups all stopped near the entrance to group and brief. The mosque is pretty enough. Non-Muslims were not permitted inside, which was disappointing but understandable. (Other historic mosques around the world HAVE let me in.). Most of the attendants were polite and helpful. A few could use a little hospitality training.

The Jewel of Jerusalem. This place is not only spiritual and grants you peace, but it is one Masterpiece of Umayyad architecture and art. The details are magnificent internally and from the exterior. Great iznic tiles and a magnanimous golden dome. This is one great Site for Holy Jerusalem were you can see it from many places, especially during sunset as its reflecting the light wonderfully.

Al- Aqsa mosque is one the most beautiful places that I have been in my life. The mosque considered as a holy by muslims and Christians, many people pray and tour in Al Aqsa all the year.

Mosque located within the same plaza as the dome of the rock. It is a worship place so you must be respectful all the time. The place can also be accessed through the access point at the Dung gate. No entrance fee, however check the entrance times that are usually two, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Closed on Fridays.
