Unique living fort. There are many people who still live inside. Jain temples have beautiful intricate detail walls. There is a section of palace which is open, but otherwise the real charms is to roam in the small lanes. There are many view points from where city can be seen. Very nice vantage point for sunrise and sunsets.

Decent palace but hate that you have guides attacking you from all sides. The people living there will try to pull you into their shops for purchasing stuff from them. Entry fee is high but you get to see only limited portions of the palace, according to the path shown by the arrows. Fabulous view from all over the palace, great stuff. Bit disappointing though in terms of them not allowing you to explore the entire place.

Only fort in India where people still resides which is itself a royal feeling. The Jaisalmer Fort is huge with marvellous cravings on it, one of my favourite forts so far. To know about the living of the people residing inside of the fort was truly an amazing experience. There are few viewpoints and several Jain temples you can visit, plus there are ample numbers of shops almost to every door from where you can buy souvenirs. The only thing I didn’t like was that after seeing the visitors/tourist the guides jump on you like anything which is quite annoying.

Jaisalmer Fort was terrific. The views from the top of the fort are amazing. I would really recommend you to get a stay inside the fort. If you are a backpacker, Id recommend Zostel. The narrow alleys with all the high rise homes & buildings inside, give a serene vibe to this living fort. The wind blows continuously throughout the day & provides a real relief from the heat. Exploring these alleys as a backpacker is just amazing because you never know what youll encounter next, monuments, temples, view points, cafes, shops, etc.

Jaisalmer Fort is situated in the city of Jaisalmer, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is believed to be one of the very few living forts in the world (such as Carcassonne, France), as nearly one fourth of the old citys population still resides within the fort.[1] For the better part of its 800-year history, the fort was the city of Jaisalmer. The first settlements outside the fort walls, to accommodate the growing population of Jaisalmer, are said to have come up in the 17th century.Jaisalmer Fort is the second oldest fort in Rajasthan, built in 1156 AD by the Rajput Rawal (ruler) Jaisal from whom it derives its name,[2] and stood at the crossroads of important trade routes (including the ancient Silk road).[1]The forts massive yellow sandstone walls are a tawny lion colour during the day, fading to honey-gold as the sun sets, thereby camouflaging the fort in the yellow desert. For this reason it is also known as the Sonar Quila or Golden Fort.[3] The fort stands amidst the sandy expanse of the great Thar Desert on Trikuta Hill. It is today located along the southern edge of the city that bears its name; its dominant hilltop location making the sprawling towers of its fortifications visible for many miles around.[4]In 2013, at the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Jaisalmer Fort, along with 5 other forts of Rajasthan, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the group Hill Forts of Rajasthan.Legend has it that the fort was built by Rawal Jaisal, a Bhati Rajput, in 1156 CE.[5] The story says that it superseded an earlier construction at Lodhruva, with which Jaisal was dissatisfied. Thus, a new capital was established when Jaisal founded the city of Jaisalmer.[2]Around 1293-94 CE, Rawal Jethsi faced an eight to nine-year siege by Sultan Alauddin Khalji of Delhi, who is said to have been provoked by a Bhati raid on his treasure caravan.[1] By the end of the siege, facing certain defeat, the Bhati Rajput women committed jauhar, and the male warriors met their fatal end in battle with the Sultans forces. For a few years after the successful siege, the fort remained abandoned, before being eventually reoccupied by some surviving Bhatis.[6]During Rawal Lunakarans reign, around 1530 - 1551 CE, the fort was attacked by an Afghan chief Amir Ali. When it seemed to the Rawal that he was fighting a losing battle, he slaughtered his womenfolk as there was insufficient time to arrange a jauhar. Tragically, reinforcements arrived immediately after the deed was done and the army of Jaisalmer became victorious in its defence of the fort.In 1541 CE, Rawal Lunakaran also fought Mughal emperor Humayun when the latter attacked the fort on his way to Ajmer.[7] He also offered his daughter in marriage to Akbar. Mughals controlled the fort till 1762.[8]The fort remained under the control of Mughals until 1762 when Maharawal Mulraj took control of the fort. The treaty between the East India Company and Mulraj on 12 December 1818 allowed the Mulraj to retain control of the fort and provided for protection from invasion. After the death of Mulraj in 1820, his grandson Gaj Singh inherited control of the fort.[8]With the advent of British rule, the emergence of maritime trade and the growth of the port of Bombay led to the gradual economic decline of Jaisalmer. After independence and the Partition of India, the ancient trade route was totally closed, thus permanently removing the city from its former role of importance in international commerce. Nonetheless, the continued strategic importance of Jaisalmer was demonstrated during the 1965 and 1971 wars between India and Pakistan.[c

Said to be the only fort with people still living inside in India, a magnificent piece of architecture. It stands tall atop a hillock and is visible from a long distance. Vehicles are not allowed inside, but there is a parking area inside the fort and one outside also. Inside, theres not much to see, except a Jain temple, a museum and an old residential property which has collections from all over the world. The fun part is a large number of shops and restaurants inside the fort, but watch out for overpriced local stuff and do bargain well. the beauty of the fort is highlighted by some sensible and tasteful lighting which one can see after sunset even from a distance. A variety of restaurants inside and on the periphery of the fort offer cuisines right from home cooked local food to Italian.

Jaisalmer is a former medieval trading center and a princely state in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, in the heart of the Thar Desert. Known as the Golden City, its distinguished by its yellow sandstone architecture. Dominating the skyline is Jaisalmer Fort, a sprawling hilltop citadel buttressed by 99 bastions. Behind its massive walls stand the ornate Maharajas Palace and intricately carved Jain temples

Jaisalmer Fort locally known as Sonar Quila is the one and only living fort in India located in Jaisalmer City in Rajasthan. Beside palace many local families are also residing in this fort. It is like a small city itself. It is recommended to take a guide with you or else you might forget the ways in the fort. Dont miss the Palace museum inside the fort. Awesome architecture fort, its triple ringed defense architecture. In Fort 7 Jain temples built by yellow sandstone and there are many elaborate havelis carved from yellow sandstone.

Small but very good fort. It is called as Ajay fort as well as no one have ever won this fort. It in on little hight, so if you can not walk on hight take small rixa it is easy available. You can see city view from the top. If you are interested in history of fort take guide with you. Moreover in Jaisalmer you can find Ayurvedic stone glasses, pots etc. but only buy from authorised places or else you ended up with fake products. Its nice and small fort.
