I have been in Jaipur in Summer Volunteer Program 2014 with Sankalp for 3 weeks. I would recommend this program if you are looking to help with some great social work combined with a week long travel program, meet amazing people and have the experience of a lifetime!

This was my second time volunteering in Jaipur, India. Yet again it was an amazing experience working with their school for street kids.

The overall layout and design of the Gap Year Expedition program is good to be a responsible tourist in India, I had a great time. I joined their 6 week Gap Year India Expedition and get opportunity to work with street kids for 4 weeks. This experience definantly ranks as one of my all time greatest. The kids have touched my heart in such an incredible way.Pranay & Amita (Organizers) are compassionate, caring people who have inspired me to live my life in a way completely dedicated to the kids. I am so impressed by this project. I have learned so much that I know I will never forget. It was an honor to be a Sankalp Volunteer !!The two weeks of travel has been one of the best ever as this has been an experience of a lifetime. Thanks to Sankalp team, for all that you do for the kids here and for us !

Read both the positives and negatives of this review for the full picture :)The positives:Two of my friends and I volunteered at Sankalp for 4 weeks through the orphanage program. We had a wonderful time there and it was an experience well never forget. The volunteer home that we stayed at felt very safe and every night there was a security guard stationed outside. Oddly, there was also CCTV on every floor in the common space (i.e. the dining/living area). There was also a lady who cooked for us and helped maintain the place. She provided us with information about the local area and befriended us. We ate homely Indian food every lunch and dinner. The way the owners handled having volunteers at the orphanage was excellent as they endeavoured to always have someone present. So the minimum time we were allowed to stay was dependent on the time the volunteers before and after us would arrive/leave.It is a place that is great value for money and you really get to know your local surroundings. The negatives!!!1) Unfortunately the owners of this business (especially Prenay? The male) can be very *controlling* and have strict rules with close to *zero flexibility*. This is great for younger customers who require more boundaries to remain safe, however is not ideal if you are more capable of making rational decisions for yourself. (EXAMPLE: We volunteered M-F mornings and could travel over the weekends. We were required to get back to the volunteer home at 8pm every night including weekends. My friends and I decided to go on a trip where we would leave Friday midday and arrive back Monday morning - this proposal was completely rejected with no room for negotiation and with no rational explanation all because wed arrive back at 7am which is after the 8pm curfew).2) They also prefer that if you travel, you use the travel programs theyve created (which are definitely more expensive than if you were to do it yourself). If you dont use these programs you may oddly find yourself given less flexibility in your own travel plans. If you choose to ignore their rules be aware that they will enforce some *very questionable consequences* upon you.3) If you choose to volunteer through the orphanage program be prepared for a lot of DO NOTs. Examples: we were not allowed to take any photos at the orphanage or with any of the children, we were not allowed to give the children any life essentials (this includes fruit, socks, or even lice treatment), we were not allowed to make our own way there or back, the owners also went to lengths to try and conceal the name of the orphanage from usConclusion: there are both positives and negatives. Personally I would never go back nor would I recommend this place to anyone else. However there are some great things about the place.Note: My friends and I are approaching our mid 20s and are not underage so were perfectly capable of making rational decisions. We always ensured we traveled in at least threes and stayed safe whenever it got dark. I recommend you do the same if you visit :)
