I came to study with Sri Ramu Ramdev and was honoured to be accepted as a student in the Rangreet School in Jaipur. Having had no formal art training in miniature painting, Ramuji patiently taught me about mineral paints, how to prepare and use the art materials and, most importantly, the art of the line. At first I was eager to learn and tried to take on too much too fast -I quickly saw however that miniature painting is about patience and surrender to enjoying the technique itself, not about focusing on the result. It is a meditation, it requires focus and breath work and peace of mind. The painting has to come from the heart and not the head, and for that reason I love to learn how to paint this way, as the process is a meditation in itself. Over the years I have returned to Jaipur to continue studying with Ramuji and the palace artists, observing their practice and happy to embark in a long journey of using miniature painting into my work. These days I live between Canada and the UK and incorporate what I have learnt so far into my own art work. My work is of course not completely traditional, as I do not have the years of expertise as the master artists have, and my lifestyle and experience with art is different too. It would be disrespectful to pretend otherwise. I hope that I can honour what I learn through my painting, celebrating the tradition without appropriating from this rich heritage of painting that I have only a little experience with.Sri Ramu Ramdev is an excellent teacher, holding space for me to discover the beauty of the miniature painting process in my own time, so that each lesson is digested when I am ready to accept it. I hope to return to India to continue studying in the future and in the meantime, continue to paint from afar.Thank you 🙏Victoria
