Jal Mahal (meaning Water Palace) is a palace in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur city, the capital of the state of Rajasthan, India. The palace was originally constructed in 1699; the building and the lake around it were later renovated and enlarged in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber. The Jal Mahal palace is an architectural showcase of the Rajput style of architecture (common in Rajasthan) on a grand scale, from Mughal architecture. The building has a picturesque view of Man Sagar Lake, but owing to its seclusion from land is equally the focus of a viewpoint from the Man Sagar Dam on the eastern side of the lake in front of the backdrop of the surrounding Nahargarh (tiger-abode) hills. The palace, built in red sandstone, is a five-storied building, of which four floors remain underwater when the lake is full and the top floor is exposed[citation needed].[1] One rectangular Chhatri on the roof is of the Bengal type. The chhatris on the four corners are octagonal. The palace had suffered subsidence in the past and also partial seepage (plasterwork and wall damage equivalent to rising damp) because of waterlogging, which have been repaired under a restoration project of the Government of Rajasthan.[2]The hills surrounding the lake area, towards the north east of Jaipur, have quartzite rock formations (with a thin layer of soil cover), which is part of the Aravalli hills range. Rock exposures on the surface in some parts of the project area have also been used for constructing buildings. From the northeast, the Kanak Vrindavan valley, where a temple complex sits, the hills slope gently towards the lake edge. Within the lake area, the ground area is made up of a thick mantle of soil, blown sand, and alluvium. Forest denudation, particularly in the hilly areas, has caused soil erosion, compounded by wind and water action. As a result, silt built up in the lake incrementally raises the lake bed.[3] On the terrace of the palace, a garden was built with arched passages. At each corner of this palace semi-octagonal towers were built with an elegant cupola.[4]The restoration works of the early 2000s were not satisfactory and an expert in the field of similar architectural restoration works of Rajasthan palaces carefully examined the designs that could decipher the originally existing designs on the walls, after removing the recent plasterwork. Based on this finding, restoration works were re-done with traditional materials for plastering – the plaster consists of partly organic material: a mortar mix of lime, sand and surkhi mixed with jaggery, guggal and methi powder. It was also noticed that there was hardly any water seepage, except for a little dampness, on the floors below the water level. But the original garden, which existed on the terrace had been lost. Now, a new terrace is being created based on a similar roof garden of the Amer Palace.[1] The building is located near the shoreline of a lake with a maximum depth of 15 ft. Though 4 stories of the building are under the surface of the water, they would be built into the bed of the lake. The Royal family chhatris and cenotaphsAt Gaitore opposite the lake are chhatris and cenotaphs erected over cremation platforms of some of the Kachwaha rulers of Jaipur. They were built by Jai Singh II within landscaped gardens.[5] The cenotaphs are in honor of Pratap Singh, Madho Singh II and Jai Singh II among others. Jai Singh IIs cenotaph is made of marble and has impressive intricate carvings. It has a dome with 20 carved pillars

Jal Mahal is an amazing palace in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur city. It is believed that this Palace was built in the 18th century. It offers beautiful views at sunrise and sunset times especially, but there is always a good time to see it. One more gem that the pink city offers. There are many many peddlers selling goods along the walking pathway near the pavilions where we can view the palace. While some may find this a bit vulgar diminishing the beauty of the palace views... I found it particularly exciting to photograph them! Watch out for them hassling you to buy something or the other!

Jal Mahal, one of the top places to visit in Jaipur, doesn’t have any recorded history about who built it or when. However, it is popularly believed that Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh constructed Jal Mahal in 1799 to serve as a hunting lodge during his duck shooting trips. Some people also credit Maharaja Madho Singh I for the construction of this palace and date its origins back to the 1750s. Regardless of who built the palace, it was never meant to be used as a regular palace for living.Later, the palace was renovated by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber in the 18th century. Over the years, the structure suffered subsidence due to partial seepage of lake water and waterlogging issues. After several years of deterioration and neglect, renovation works were carried out in the early part of the 21st century to restore the palace into its former glory. Though the palace and many of its features have been restored, its original terrace garden could not be salvaged. Plans are on to create a new terrace garden modeled on the rooftop garden of the famous Amer Palace in Jaipur.Jal Mahal ArchitectureJal Mahal stands in the middle of a lake that has a maximum depth of 15 feet and a minimum depth of 4.9 feet. It is a five-storied structure built in the Rajput style of architecture, with influences of the Mughal architectural style. While four of its stories remain under water, only the top story remains visible, giving you an impression that the palace is floating on the waters of the lake.Jal Mahal has been constructed out of red sandstone. Four elaborate chhatris designed in octagonal shape adorn the four corners of the palace. A huge Bengal-style rectangular chhatri also exists on the roof of the palace. In its heyday, the terrace garden of Jal Mahal was decorated with arched passages.Jal Mahal, Jaipur: TodayToday, a visit to Jal Mahal counts among the top things to do in Jaipur. The alluring view of the palace against the backdrop of the verdant Aravalli Hills is a sight to cherish. No wonder, the Jal Mahal Palace in Jaipur is among the most photographed structures in India. It is also a paradise for bird watchers as various species of local and migratory birds flock to this lake.As the palace remains submerged in a lake, a boat ride is the only way to reach it. The palace has been declared a protected property by the government, so boat rides and entry to the palace premises are restricted at present. However, you can spend hours admiring and photographing the palace from the lake shore. Every evening, the palace is illuminated for some time and the lit-up palace against the dark waters of the lake is indeed a sight to behold. The Jal Mahal Palace is located on the Amer Road, so you can combine it with your trip to the iconic Amer Fort.Lesser Known Facts about Jal Mahal, JaipurThe fascinating terrace garden of the Jal Mahal is known as Chameli Bagh.Since the palace was constructed as a picnic spot rather than a residential structure, there are no personal chambers inside it.It is believed that the palace was constructed during a famine when the lake bed had completely dried up. So, the whole edifice was visible when it was built. The walls of this stone palace were so strongly built that it prevented any water from seeping in. Limestone mortar was used to reinforce the walls.

It has been 221 years since it was built, but it still stands with the same glory as it was before. The most special thing about this five-storey Jal Mahal is that only one of its floors is visible above the water, while the remaining four floors are under water. This is the reason why there is no heat in this palace. A beautiful view of the mountains and the lake can be seen from this palace.

Nothing much to see here as for now you are not allowed inside the mahal.(Funny incident happened with me, a shop worker distinguished as tourist guide told us the story of this mahal and we believed to be authentic and forgot to check his Id card. Then he asked if we need guide for places ahead and we agreed. After 1 minute drive he asked us to stop at a shop for 10 minutes while the next place opens, “buy only if you want to” he said. When we got out of shop he left making an excuse “i will go get my scooty otherwise there is a possibility it might get stolen.” He didnt return, we didnt wait and went ahead.)

We cant get into the palace , and need to viewed from the road side. Due to sandy wind or something, the palace cant be clearly visible as it needs to be. There is walkway from where we need to see the mahal
