Galtaji is an ancient pilgrimage centre in Jaipur. Set amidst low hills and packed with locals and tourists alike, the attractive spot has temples, pavilions and holy kunds (natural springs and water tanks). Visitors to Galtaji will come across the complex of Ramgopalji temple, locally called the Monkey temple (Galwar Bagh). It gets this moniker because of a large group of resident monkeys. The green landscape and chattering monkeys add to the delight of the area. On top of the hill is a small temple dedicated to the sun god, called the Surya Mandir. Constructed by Diwan Kriparam, the temple can be seen from anywhere in the city.

GO GO GO!! Truly remarkable, stunning, lots & lots & lots of monkeys!! One of my best experiences over two years of traveling!!I thought this place was going to be packed, there were times I was literally the only person in the place!! It was truly a wonderful experience.I highly suggest walking the entire length. There are some vendors and Tuk Tuk drivers that will offer peanuts or a ride to the temple, they don’t push to hard. There might be a couple people asking for money as well, but nothing to aggressive.Waking the full length will take you pass some old buildings, which is situated in top of a hill. After you pass the first set of buildings, you walk along a dirt road. There’s brush, trees, and great pictures ahead!!You will reach the top of the hill and then descend down to Monkey Temple, which will offer more awesome pictures.Offer 200 or 300 donation at the entrance to the monkey temple, which will make the care takers happy. That’s $3 - $4 U.S.You will never forget this place, it’s truly something special and there’s hundreds of monkeys on top of everything!!VISIT VISIT VISIT!

Galtaji is an ancient Hindu pilgrimage about 10 km away from Jaipur, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The site consists of a series of temples built into a narrow crevice in the ring of hills that surrounds Jaipur. Visitors and pilgrims can ascend the crevasse, continuing past the highest water pool to a hilltop temple from there are views of Jaipur and its fortifications spreads out across the valley floor. It is believed that a Saint named Galav lived here, practiced meditation, and did penanceBuilt within a mountain pass in the Aravalli Hills 10 km. east of Jaipur,[2] Since the early 15th century Galtaji has been a retreat for Hindu ascetics belonging to the Vaishnava Ramanuja sect.[1] It is said to have been in the occupation of yogis for a long time; Payohari Krishnadas, a Ramanujite sadhu, i.e. a follower of the Ramanuja Sampradaya) came to Galta in the early 15th century and, by his yogic powers, drove away other yogis from the place.[3] Galta was northern Indias first Vaishnava Ramanuja Peeth and became the one of the most important centres of the Ramanuja sect. The temple features a number of pavilions with rounded roofs, carved pillars and painted walls. The complex is set around a natural spring and waterfalls that create 7 Holy Ponds.[4]Introduction About Galta JiThis world famous Pilgrims Paradise popularly known as Shri Galtaji is a Holy Ashram and a Governing Office of the Supreme of Shri Vaishnava Tradition which is also mentioned in many holy texts and scripts of the world.Besides, the devotee masses of Jaipur and Rajasthan, the holiness of the place is being kept intact by the erstwhile rulers and the emperors as well as the representatives of the present Government of Independent India including Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Governors, Chief-Ministers and other Ministers as well as Religious Supreme and Heads of different sects, philanthropists, politicians and Government Administrative Heads and Officials who also came to pay their homage. This holy pilgrimage centre is a traditionally established Acharya Peetham (Holy Throne of the Supreme of a Religious Sect) in India consists a group of historical temples which is being elevated keeping its holiness intact by virtue of the penance, sacrifice & contribution by the traditional Acharyas of Shri Galtaji.Under the holy guidance and direction of the Seventeenth and the present Office Bearer His Holiness Jagadguru Shri Swami Sampatkumar Avadheshacharya Ji Maharaj of Shri Galta Peetham, the process of development of place with advanced facilities and arrangements is carried forward following the line laid down by the former Acharyas of the Peetham.Besides, its religious fans and the carriers of the Indian ancient religious tradition and culture,History About Galta JiThis Galva Ashram is named after the famous Holy Saint Galva who made his penance for about 60,000 years in Satyuga and according to the ancient belief he brought the sacred Gangaji to Shri Galtaji which comes out of the Gau-mukh (Cows mouth).According to Galvashram Mahatmaya on every full moon day of the hindi month Karthik, Brahmaa, Vishnu and Shiva, the Trinity of Gods of Sanatan Dharma visit this holy place as the reason of which taking bath in the holy ponds provide divine blessings of God into multiple of trillions. It is a nice complex of temples that offers a view of the city id you come from the side where the Sun temple is. But as some of the reviews pointed there is a rather weird payment system. They charge you for a camera but yet they do not charge you for the phone. Many of the latest models of phones have much better camera than mine. Anyways, the guys taking payments dont look anything like authorities. Totally contrary they just casually sit and ask you for money. On the receipt that they give you they handwrite the price so there are no rules for how much you pay. We were there with friendly local and he did warn us about those practices. So there are weird mafia-like practices going on and everyone knows about it. Local not paying it is quite normal in India the prices for locals are usually around 10% of foreign prices or non. Which is fair taking into account economy of the country. On the second thought I just remember that on my way back there were 3 young guys that were rather aggressive towards me and tried really hard to get their hands on my camera. Summing up, the place is interesting and worth visiting. Yet, it needs more care taken of and security, as there are some shady business going on. Go see it, with a group and a local guy and dont miss the sunset from the Sun temple.

The temple is often called as the Monkey Temple as you will find many apes roaming about here within the complex. This famous temple of Jaipur is dedicated to Lord Hanuman who is also called the Sun God. This wonderful holy temple of the Hindus is made of pink sandstone and the temple appears more like a palace than a place of worship. As the temple is located on the Aravalli Hills, it offers a fantastic view of the city of Jaipur from the hilltop. The surrounding of the temple also creates a lovely landscape with green vegetations on all sides. You will also find small templesdedicated to Lord Rama and Lord Krishna being established within the complex. The walls of the temple are beautifully painted and decorated with curved pillars and rounded roofs. This holy shrine experiences a lot of crowd every year during the occasion of Makar Sakranti when a large number of devotees visit the temple to take dip in the holy waters of the kund.

Which is kind of excitingIf you have never been this to place I will recommend to take walk/bike route its exciting and you will enjoy it.Reaching down to temple its a nice place surrounded by hills all aroundOverall I will recommend to visit this place.

After a serious hike up the hills, while dodging super aggressive kids who are cheeky enough to warn you about the monkeys (no, beware the kids!), plus guys trying to be your guide, you will walk 15 minutes (stay straight at the fork, its not the first temple to the right!) you will come to planet of the apes. Or monkeys. And it is GLORIOUS! This is a dont miss. The monkeys are absolutely not aggressive, especially if you do not have food. You do not need a guide. We could have spent hours here.
