This is a monumental place where lot of historic moments took place. Since most of the Marakkar village was destroyed, only a few items are here left to see. But, special mention to the staff here who took the time and detailed us about the whole 4 Kunjalis and the battles theyve had done. Ticket rate is very reasonable too .. Rs. 10 for Adults and Rs.20 for photography.

A small portion of house, which is the only left over part of the original fort of Kunjali (which used to cover an area of ​​about 4 km) has now been converted into a museum. History of 4 generation of Kunjali marakkar is beautifully written over the wall of the museum. It also contains a 3-D model of the original old fort in center of the museum which will give you a stunning view about the 15th century. Museum also displayed few cannon fodder, coins of Portuguese army, few clay pot of old century. Guide facility also available. Visiting charge per person is Rs10/- rupees

Its a small museum which is run by the Department of Culture of Archeological Society of Govt of Kerala. There are only a few items on display. The person sitting at the ticket counter is able to explain a lot about the are facts here. One can park a car just outside this museum. One can spend about half an hour to 45 minutes at this museum. Its open from 9am to 5pm and closed on Mondays.

Salute the services of Kunjali Marackar , if you are interested in Kerala history its a perfect place to visit. Take your children too.

Calm and quiet place. Renovation works were going on during our visit. The museum local guide was friendly and explained the history beautifully. A model of the area and fort was displayed in the museum along with artifacts. Shocked to hear the story of betrayal and the incidents led to complete destruction.

The museum houses few artefacts related to Kunhali marakkars.Some of these include the weapons and cannon balls used by the marakkars.It has a model of Kunhalis fort before it was razed to ground in 1600 C.E.The house of one of the descendants of Kunhali marakkar has been renovated and made the Kunhali memorial.This is a protected moument under the State Archaeology Department, Kerala.The museum guide is very knowledgeable and gives excellent narration of the Kunhali marakkars and their naval battle.

Many years ago there was a fort here but it was destroyed by the Portugese with the help of Samuthirees.The house of Kunjali which had 16 rooms is protected here but now it has only 3 rooms. The Portuguese initially attempted to obtain trading privileges in 1498, but soon had troubles because the pressure from the Muslim Arabs over the Zamorin, since they had traditionally been trading in his ports, and did not want to lose the monopoly in trading spices. The Zamorin resisted these attempts which resulted in the Portuguese trying to destabilise his rule by negotiating a treaty with his arch enemy, the Kingdom of Cochin in 1503. Sensing the Portuguese superiority at sea, the Zamorin set about improving his navy. He appointed Kunjali Marakkar to the task.The fight between the Zamorin and the Portuguese continued on until the end of the 16th century, when the Portuguese convinced the Zamorin in 1598 that Marakkar IV intended to take over his Kingdom. The Zamorin then joined hands with the Portuguese to defeat Marakkar IV, ending in his defeat and death in 1600.The Kunjali IV had rescued a Chinese boy, called Chinali, who had been enslaved on a Portuguese ship. The Kunjali was very fond of him, and he became one of his most feared lieutenants, a Muslim and enemy of the Portuguese.[1][2] The Portuguese were terrorized by the Kunjali and his Chinese right-hand man, eventually, after the Portuguese allied with Calicuts Samorin, under Andre Furtado de Mendoça they attacked the Kunjali and Chinalis forces, and they were handed over to the Portuguese by the Samorin after he reneged on a promise to let them go.[3] Diogo do Couto, a Portuguese historian, questioned the Kunjali and Chinali when they were captured.[4] He was present when the Kunjali surrendered to the Portuguese, and was described: One of these was Chinale, a Chinese, who had been a servant at Malacca, and said to have been the captive of a Portuguese, taken as a boy from a fusta, and afterwards brought to Kunhali, who conceived such an affection for him that he trusted him with everything. He was the greatest exponent of the Moorish superstition and enemy of the Christians in all Malabar, and for those taken captive at sea and brought thither he invented the most exquisite kinds of torture when he martyred them.[5][6][7] However, de Coutos claim that he tortured Christians was questioned, since no other source reported this, and is dismissed as ridiculous.[8][
