When it comes to the Heritage in Indore, the whole city owes a great deal to the famous feminist Ahilyabai Holkar and her family. The Holkars have contributed a lot to the citys development. Rajwada palace being the stronghold of their roots in the system. Currently, under restoration work, It is a masterpiece of Maratha Architecture. It has a shiv temple inside( Ahiliyabais favorite deity) & the whole structure stands on multiple intricately crafted pillars. There is a courtyard blessed with lush greens in the center & the corridors comprise all the artifacts and paintings with historical depictions. On the first floor, a museum dedicated to the Holkar lineage consists of their daily items and tiny mannequins showing Ahiliyabais contribution to society and a recently added room showing how the last to the Holkar lineage alongside the British, constructed the services throughout the city. A serene and sublime ambiance and quite spiritual too. Staffs are helpful and generous.

Historical Palace which was once the residing place for the Holkar Dynasty , who ruled over Indore. The palace is located in the hustling-bustling central area of Indore. It’s a 7 storey structure with a beautiful facade. The main gate remains closed and the entry is through the side gate.Inside the palace one can find lots of paintings , old artefacts , statues of Gods , and even small puppets depicting stories of the historical era. Wooden pillars are erected and form wonderful alleys. One has to pay ₹.10/- for entering the ‘Holkar Gallery’ . Do read the historical fascinating facts about Devi Ahilya Bai , Yeshwant Rao Holkar and other Holkar rulers .Imagine the time when the royal family resided here and ruled. Their opulence and their grandiosity is sheer evident in this palace known as the ‘Rajwada’.

Highly polluted area, you are going to face heavy traffic so I suggest dont go in a four wheeler instead park it near porwal store even though you are on a two wheeler. Walking is the best way to commute at Rajwada. But the market is huge and diversified you will find almost every thing at very low cost.

Located near the famous Kajuri Market in Indore, Rajwada is a magnificent and historical palace that is located in the city of Indore and was constructed by the Holkars more than 200 years ago. It is a seven-storied structure located near the Chhatris and serves as an excellent example of royal grandeur and architectural skills.Nestled between the crowded streets of the Kajuri Bazar and facing the main square of the city, the Rajwada palace also faces a well-maintained garden that houses a statue of Queen Ahilya Bai, an artificial waterfall and some beautiful fountains. Even after all these years, the palace continues to be one of the most famous tourist spots in Indore and is one of the oldest structures too.

Had heard a lot about this historical palace and made a visit to this place when in Indore, but to our disappointment, most of the sections of the palace were under renovation and hence closed. There was only a very small section of the palace that was open to visitors but even at that, it was a gem of a place. Exceptionally peaceful given the crazily busy surrounding its situated in with a pretty veranda of sorts and a temple inside as well. The area around is a busy market place full of narrow lanes with lots of shops and eateries. You can actually enjoy the peace and quiet of the palace and then head into the market place for your shopping experience.
