Very deceiving! Thought it was the small fields and house, but oh no wait a minute. There’s a rolling down hil just as you walk past the house and the biggest field leading down to the beach!! So amazing! Be careful coming back though, it’s a pretty long and steep hill! Definitely have someone pull you haha
I came for trail running and this place did not disappoint. I logged 6 miles on both trails and had a good time. Unfortunately I must give it a one star review. This estate was obviously a plantation and there was no mention of the people who worked this tobacco farm. Slavery cannot be erased. We must tell the truth about our history.
Tucked away in the woods of Indian Head is a delightful park that most people only know by stumbling upon it or finding it after a day of exploration. The house settled atop Mount Aventine hails from the 1840s, and in the 1980s the land was acquired by the state of MD. The home is on the National registry of history places, and the Chapman family who resided in it ran a ferry boat and steamboat business. If you walk around behind the house, youll see the dipping hillside overlooking a stunning view of the Potomac River. This location is great for photo shoots and for American history unit studies.
Fun hiking trails with great views of the water!
Its a great location! Behind the building there is a great view of the land, the river, and just beyond there is Virginia. Definitely recommend going!
Our family photographer chose this spot to take outdoor Christmas photos and it was picturesque and natural. Be advised it is an extremely long walk to the historic plantation house and view of the water. (Not really accessible for elderly.) Also ....parents....lots of places to easily lose sight of quick little ones as you can be on one side of house as they go to other and under the porch or down the hill or into the woods. Wear running shoes and it could be great family fun though. Amazing and quiet.... almost hallowed spot to enjoy nature and contemplate lives of slaves in historic southern Maryland. Beautiful gravel tree lined lane made perfect backdrop for beautiful portraits. We cannot wait to visit in every season!
The entrance was closed for vehicle traffic. I parked at the entrance and walked through the side gate. The walk to Mount Aventine was half a mile. As I got closer to the house, there were trees planted on both sides of the path and Mount Aventine slowly began to appear between the trees... Very pretty view. Behind the house is a large field with a path, River Access Trail, to the Potomac River. I stopped behind the house, saw the frame of the smokehouse, and turned around to walk back to the car. Total of 1.05 miles. I was going to hike the trails but my pups already walked over 2 miles before arriving at the park. I didnt think the want to go another couple more miles. The entrance to the Coastal Woodlands Trail is on the right before reaching the house and there is a portable potty in the trees right after the Coastal Woodlands Trail. After passing the trail entrance, the Potomac River Trail entrance is on the left. Look for a rectangular information sign and you will see the trail entrance. Everything is well marked. This park is very quiet and peaceful. I will probably come back and hike the Marsh Trail, which is what I came here for. Didnt realize I couldnt drive up to the house, closer to the trail entrance.
Truly quite surprising! It has woods, waterline, beautiful driftwood, quaint. It was a nice day out taking in the beauty.Con: lots of trash littered the shore.
Good for a long hike, river shoreline, historic structures, never crowded.
It is a beautiful piece of property to explore. When I got to the back of the house the scenery overwhelmed me, leaving an unfamiliar heaviness. My first and last plantation.
This a hidden gem! Very cool state park with a lot to offer and explore. There is a beach area for fishing and wading, it’s about a mile walk down a hill to get there. There are historical buildings to explore as well. There is are trails for hiking, but the wooded area is sometimes used for hunting so be careful. Great place for dogs! There is a small parking lot, but it doesn’t seem to be too frequented.
Awesome Aventine Mount mansion, with a beautiful view over the Potomac and a nice landing. I really liked the story of a Hungarian princess breeding the war spoil Hungarian horses here.
A hidden gem in Charles County. Sadly, The house was not open for touring. Sad, too, that there has been no upkeep on the outbuildings. The grounds are lovely and the view of the Potomac was outstanding! It should be beautiful with blooms in a few more weeks. Will return then.
Beautiful views of the Potomac and Virginia from up by the house. Easy walk for families. Wonder if theres a trail map link.
Chapman State Park is a state park 30 minutes south of Southeast DC along the Potomac River. Heres why its worth the drive:1) Family-friendly: If you have small children, its perfect. There are two trails and none are longer than 1.5 miles long. Its easier for children. Theres also a wildlife preserve where you may find turtles, lizards, bald eagles, and other animals. The trails lead to the river with small sandy beaches for children to hunt for seashells.2) History: The property belonged to the Chapman family since 1751. The family has ties to several Founding Fathers. Theres a historic mansion on the property restored (tours are offered). There are several old buildings abandoned and worth exploring.3) Architecture: The mansion is beautiful and was used during the Civil War by the Federal government. The back porch offers stunning views of the Potomac River.Theres one thing to be warned- ticks! Bring repellent and stay on the marked trails. We went in May. Venturing off the trail for literally 15 seconds resulted in three ticks on my ankle. Ugh!
Gorgeous view! 😍I 8
My girlfriend and I had the most wonderful experience here. It was the most fun Ive had at a park. The view was simply amazing and full of wonder. It helped us forget about the stress of our lives and the pandemic and we really needed that.aap
Great place to hike. A lot of history here.
Great for walking (some might call it hiking) and enjoying the banks of the Potomac. Not too crowded, free parking, and historical learning. Used to be a plantation and has some information about the people and place. Also can find traces of Native American history.
Beautiful Views of the Potomac River
Really nice way to spend some time in nature. The trails arent the widest so be prepared to wear your mask. Its really nice by the Potomac
Beautiful Area.
Beautiful park. A little daunting when youre alone but otherwise, truly peaceful. My fiance and I ventured this park along with our Westie. We enjoyed the peace but be sure to spray yourself down with bug repellant. The trek down to the water was nice and just whats needed during these times if youre looking to get out of the house.
Honestly an underrated park that is limited by parking but it has great scenery, trails that take you up to the river and my dog loves it. Due to. Parking at the entrance be prepared to walk (:
Came here for the first time with my girlfriend and 2 dogs. Trials aren’t super long but are nice and very scenic.
Beautiful place to go for a walk. Notice the cacti as you go to the river from the back of the house. Its a nice work out but a gorgeous view.
Great historical place. Fun time with family. Learned a lot about how people lived in the old days. Even a couple of the rooms upstairs are claimed to be haunted.
The Mount Aventine house and the history of Chapman landing are fascinating, and the sweeping view of the potomac river offered from the back porch is breath taking... ideal spot for a picnic if the weather is good. However, the park does not have much in the way of walking trails, offering only a couple relatively brief paths down to the river. I was unable to determine whether or not the historic house was open to the public, though it appeared not to be. All in all, it made for a very interesting pit stop, but by no means took my whole day to visit.
Pretty historical area, no toilets at the trailhead. Pretty easy hike back to the house, which is where all the trails really start.
Cool place for walk around
Very beautiful and scenic with a short-medium sized walking trail. The historic house is lovely. This park would be great for a wedding.
Beautiful place to enjoy nature!
As of 2015, this park is clean and beautiful. I have taken my daughter there in a stroller a few times, its a good little bumpy (unpaved) walk with a beautiful view of fields and the Potomac behind the house at the end of the lane. I havent made the hike on any of the trails yet, but have seen runners there before enjoying a challenging run. I imagine it would be a good walk for families or more adventurous types looking for a nice day out. Lots of birds, deer and even a fox! There is a port-a-potty on the grounds, but no actual bathrooms on site. I believe the house is open for tours on occasion.
Fun time w/my family
Very cool, historical place to go for a family outing.
Beautiful historic location. Great for the entire family.
Nice place to go for a Nice walk in the park..A Solid 8-10 miles of walking trails down the River & through theWoods..G
Very cool and historic park. Lots of history and information.
My family loves coming here because of the view and the variety of scenery within the park. I even did a photoshoot here once which seems to be a popular choice for some local photographers.
Only there for a short period of time, found about 12 shark teeth.

Nice and beautiful park. Will go back to visit again.
Quite. Serene. And very educational!
Had a wonderful sincerity the tour of gorgeous house and view!
Very nice place
Spiderwebs everywhere on my early morning hike. It is like a creepier, emptier Mt. Vernon. Check out the collapsed house ruins on the side trail that leads to the Potomac rivers edge.
Great hiking trails and dog friendly!
