I have a very intimate relation with this place since my childhood. It has made me familiar with the empire of Bengali literature. After my home, this place offers me most comfort with its startling collection of books and magazines. You can also request for new books and the staffs are always amicable to you.

History:This library can be considered as one of the greatest heritage of Bally. Founded in 1885 in Haridhan Goswamys house, as Boys Association, the library shifted to many places, like ‘Beams Charitable Dispensary’ building (presently known as Kedarnath Arogya Bhaban), to River Thomson School (presently Bally Shantiram School), before finally setting up at 383,G.T.Road, beside Bally AC Ground. In 1913 the foundation was renamed as Bally Public Library, which was LAter, in 1933, again renamed as Bally Sadharan Granthgar, which it carries till date. In th present, the library has two main buildings, one the general sections building. Another is the Children section situated at Radhanath Banerjee Lane.Statistics:It houses approximately 35000 books (about 6500 rare), 5000 periodicals (3500 rare), 316 old manuscripts (all rare). There are 50 members in Librarys volunteery working committee. The library sees an average of 125 readers per day. [As per 2009]Present Activities:Unlike many old libraries, even many State Govt. owned libraries, Bally Public Library isnt dying out, or struggling to maintain its existence. Instead, the administration and members have stepped up with their collaborrative effort and kept this a very active library in all the regards. The library celebrated its 125th foundation day in 2009. The library is taking efforts in coservation and restoration of old and rare books, also keeping up with the present trend, library is trying to digitize and store its books online.
