Beautiful monastry with a large stone-carved christian cross under UNESCO protectionAs mentioned by other reviewers, it is recommended if you travel with a knowledgeable local guide who could provide a proper introduction and historical facts. Else this would seem like another monastry (which there are plenty in this region...and on the surface they all look similar).

Haghpat Monastery with St Gregory church is an ancient pearl situated in the village Haghpat of Lori Province in Armenia. From the center of city Alaverdi you will need approximately 25 minutes on taxi to reach there and to admire its intact beauty. You will undoubtedly enjoy the special atmosphere of this historic place which will transport you to 11th century making you to touch the history with your own fingers. A must see place during your visit in Armenia.

Haghpat monastery was founded by Queen Khosrovanuysh, wife of the Bagratid king Ashot III, probably in 976.The nearby monastery at Sanahin was built around the same time. It is around 170 km from Yerevan City towards the northeast. it overlooks the Debed River in northern Armenias Lori Region. The monastery stood the test of time for the last thousand years. Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries came under  UNESCOs World Heritage List in 1996 for its development of unique Armenian religious architecture which is a blend of of elements of Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture and the traditional vernacular architecture of the Caucasian Region. Visit and be blessed. Good luck.

The monastery was founded by Queen Khosrovanuysh, wife of the Bagratid king Ashot III, probably in 976. The nearby monastery at Sanahin was built around the same time. The location of Haghpat Monastery was chosen so that it overlooks the Debed River in northern Armenias Lori region. It was built, not on a peak, but halfway up a hillside on a site chosen to afford protection and concealment from prying eyes and also in response to a kind of monastic humility. It is built on a verdant promontory located in the middle of a mountain cirque, which is often wreathed in clouds. A peak on the opposite side of the river is over 2,500 meters high. The monasteries of northern Armenia are not isolated, unlike their counterparts in the countrys arid regions. They were built in a village environment and Haghpat is surrounded by many hamlets.

A beautiful monastery, Founded in 976 under Ashot III. In the second half of the 18th century, the famous poet Sayat Nova lived in the monastery for several years. At the beginning of the XX century, Haghpat was empty, having lost most of his possessions. Reopened under Catholicos Wazgen I, it is currently a functioning monastery. The monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin in 1996 were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

It was an important educational institution of the Kiurik dynasty that flourished in the 10th and 13th centuries. It began construction in 966 and was completed in 991, and has been completely restored to its early form through some restoration work in the 12th century.

Haghpat Monastery is located in the southeastern part of the Haghpat village: on a high plateau. It was founded in 976 during the reign of Ashot Bagratuni. Haghpat was one of the most significant spiritual and cultural centers. From the second half of the 12th century to the 14th century, Haghpat Monastery was the diocesan center of the Kyurikyan dynasty. The ancestral crypt of the kings was moved here from the Sanahin monastery. In the 11th century, Tashir was subjected to frequent attacks by the Seljuks and Arabs. From the second half of the 12th century, the monastery passed to the Artsruni dynasty from Makhkanaberd, and then to the Zakaryan dynasty. In 1223, by order of Ivane Zakaryan, the Haghpat fortress was built nearby to protect the monastery.Haghpat Monastery is one of the largest monastic complexes in Armenia, which has unique features of medieval Armenian architecture: picturesqueness, harmony with the environment, territorial balance. The monastery includes the churches of St. Nshan, St. Astvatsatsin (Mother of God), St. Grigiria, a parish, a chapel, a printing house, a library, a bell tower, a refectory, chapel-graves, khachkars. In the 11-13th centuries the Haghpat school and printing house were known. Here they taught grammar, public speaking, philosophy, theology, music and other subjects. Haghpat was also famous for its miniature school. The famous Armenian composer Sayat-Nova lived here for several years under the vestments of a priest. Many legends are associated with the name Haghpat. One of them says that one day the prince of Sanahin invites a famous master to build a monastery. The master comes with his son. During the work, a dispute arises between father and son. After a long dispute, the son leaves his job and leaves. On the way, another prince invites him to build a monastery. When the walls of the building are high enough to be visible from Sanahin, the workers tell the old master about it. On a non-working day, the old man goes to Haghpat to see how his sons construction work is going; looks at the walls for a very long time. Everyone was impatiently awaiting the assessment of the master, and he, at last, pressing his hand on the masonry, exclaimed: “Ah pat”. (“This is the wall”). Here father and son embraced and made peace, and the monastery was named “Haghpat”.
