I was debating if I should flag this incident or not considering it involves an NGO that otherwise does good work, but it is important to warn other freelancers to tread carefully when working with them.> On January 20th, I was connected to Geeta Malhotra, the Country Director of READ India by an ex-client. They needed a content writer to ghostwrite a book for them.> On February 17th, emails were exchanged with more details and a discussion also happened regarding the timeline.> On February 18th, a discounted project fee was locked in by Geeta for me to come on board for this project, and a timeline was also locked in. This confirmation was officially provided in a written email. A payment structure was also agreed upon (i.e. instalments). Geeta asked me to raise an Invoice for an advance payment, but was yet to send me the details to mention on the Invoice (i.e. which name to raise the invoice to).> On February 20th, I sent Geeta a follow-up because she did not send the details to mention on the Invoice, and there were some more documents she was yet to send, including a letter. Geeta emailed me back that she will send the pending information on Monday, and we were to hop on a call on Tuesday. We were operating with a tight deadline considering the number of interviews to conduct and transcribe for their book. Considering the project was going to take a solid 1-2 months of my time, I did not entertain other client inquiries, so there would be no conflict.> On February 24th, Geeta said it is taking more time from her end, and she asked me to wait until February 26th for the missing information / files.> There was 0 word from Geetas end. I was feeling anxious because a) this project was worth an amount that was going to help me sustain myself for nearly 5 months and b) I had not taken on any other assignments to make sure I could deliver their book on time. I sent a follow-up email on March 1st.> On March 3rd, Geeta emailed me back that the project has suddenly been canned. 0 compensation was offered for blocking my time and misleading me since February 18ths written confirmation that the project had been handed over to me.The work READ India does might be great, but their protocol regarding working with freelancers is not very ethical.
