Goshavank is a 12th-century Armenian monastery located in the village of Gosh in the Tavush Province of Armenia. The impressive monastery which has remained in relatively good condition also houses one of the worlds finest examples of a khachkar.Goshavank was erected in the place of an older monastery once known as Nor Getik, which had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1188. Mkhitar Gosh, a statesman, scientist and author of numerous fables and parables as well as the first criminal code, took part in the rebuilding of the monastery. At Goshavank, Mkhitar Gosh founded a school. One of its alumni, an Armenian scientist by the name of Kirakos Gandzaketsi wrote The History of Armenia. The architect Mkhitar the Carpenter and his disciple Hovhannes also took an active part in the building of the monastery. The complex was later renamed Goshavank and the village named Gosh in his honor.
The monastery was built not far from the ruins of an older monastery named Getik which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1188. The current monastery is sometimes referred to as Nor Getik (New Getik). In the 12th-13th centuries Goshavank became one of the most famous religious and scholarly centers in medieval Armenia, led by one of Armenias most accomplished scholars, legal experts and scientists, Mkhitar Gosh (Mkhitar from Gosh, 1130–1213). The monastery was renamed Goshavank upon his death.Mkhitar Gosh was one of the great intellectual powers of his day, “a humble man of wisdom”, authoring numerous works, including a Codification of Armenian Law, his extremely popular Fables, a number of prayers, theological treatises and other writings. He was twice awarded the title Vardapet (doctor of theology) and had a great reputation among politicians and state figures and was a confidant and advisor to the most important rulers of Armenia, including Zakareh II the Great. At Goshavank, he taught a number of famous scholars and established Armenias first law library. The current monastery was built between 1188 and the late 13th century. Chronicles record Mkhitar and his followers first establishing a small, wooden church in the name of Saint John the Baptist (St. Karapet) before laying the foundations for St. Astvatsatsin church in 1191.The monastery is considered one of the great examples of Armenian architecture, the work of many talented architects, carpenters and stone masons. The names of three masters were preserved for posterity and come down to us: the architect Mkhitar (the Joiner, or Carpenter); his disciple Hovhannes and the sculptor Pavghos (Poghos), creator of some of Armenias most famous khachkars (stone crosses).
Heaven on earth.Hamble and honest local priest talked to us making this place even more eternal.
Middle age Christian monastery with beautiful architectural solutions. There are some ruins of pagan temples. Great nature and tasty cousin in home-made style.
Must seeing in the region. Interesting, old an historically significant complex.

The monastery was built by the famous vardapet (doctor of theology) Mkhitar Gosh near the ruins of the Getik monastery, destroyed by an earthquake in 1188. The monastery was originally named Nor Getik (New Getik), and in 1213 it was renamed Goshavank.Goshavank was one of the most famous religious and educational centers of medieval Armenia, where the great Armenian scholar, jurist and chronicler Mkhitar Gosh (1130-1213) lived and worked for 25 years.Mkhitar Gosh was one of the great minds of his time - a lawyer, theologian, chronicler, fabulist and teacher. He was so famous for his wisdom that many (even doctors of theology and other scientists) came to him from distant places to study with him. Gosh is the author of numerous works, including the Code of Laws, considered one of the great achievements of jurisprudence, popular fables loved by many, many prayers, sacred chants, theological treatises and historical works. He was highly respected among the political and statesmen of his time and was a confidant and advisor to Zakare II the Great Zakaryan. The construction of the Goshavank monastery began in 1188 and was completed at the end of the 13th century. The chroniclers note that Mkhitar and his followers first erected a small wooden church in honor of St. John the Baptist (St. Karapet), and then in 1191 laid the foundation of the St. Astvatsatsin church. The construction project of the monastery was implemented by many talented architects, carpenters and masons. However, the names of only three masters have come down to us - the architect Mkhitar, his student Hovhannes and the sculptor Pogos, the creator of the most beautiful khachkar Goshavank.
The medieval monastery complex of the 12th-13th centuries was founded by Mkhitar Gosh with the assistance of Prince Ivan Zakaryan in 1188, on the site of the Getik monastery destroyed by an earthquake. After the death of Ghosh in 1213, the monastery was also called Goshavank. On the territory of the monastery, the destroyed crypt of Mkhitar Gosh, a cemetery and khachkars. In 1972, a historical and architectural museum was created here.
The wonderful nature of our homeland
Very impressive monastery complex. There were hardly any tourists during our visit and there was enough time to look at everything. As there is a parking space in front of the building, it takes hardly a minute to reach the church.
The monastery is located near Dilijan and about two hours drive from Yerevan. Around the monastery you can find beautiful cross-stones, not far from the central building there is a small garlic. The nature around is beautiful
There are places that prove the truth of the story. As Noahs Ark proves that the Bible is true. So this church proves that the story is not a myth.
Very atmospheric place. Many have already written that it is beautiful there - and this is undoubtedly so - but in a monastery you somehow somehow feel special and it is difficult to convey this feeling in words. Swallows live inside the temple, and lizards live in the walls, which sometimes climb onto the facade to bask in the sun.
Goshavank is one of the most interesting monasteries in Tavush region. It was founded by Mkhitar Gosh in 1188. Most of the churches were built in the 12-13th centuries. One of the two magnificent khachkars created by master Poghos is located in Goshavank. The other khachkar can be seen in Yerevan, in the History Museum of Armenia.
A very interesting and picturesque place. Goshavank Monastery or Nor Getik was erected on the site of the ancient Getik Monastery destroyed by an earthquake (1188). In the construction of the monastery was attended by a politician and outstanding scientist and writer of medieval Armenia Mkhitar Gosh, in whose honor the monastery was named and you will see a monument to him in the walls of the monastery. The ensemble of structures of the monastery includes the church of St. Astvatsatsin (1196), Church of St. Grigor (1231), Church of St. Grigor Lusavorich (1241), narthex (1203), book depository with a bell tower (1291), school buildings, a chapel and a gallery (13th century). The main churches of the monastery belong to the common cross-dome type with four limits in corners.

Armenian culture is very ancient, appeared before the Jewish self. The Armenians are great. Ancient monuments have been preserved in their original form.
Located away from noisy tourist routes this creates the feeling of time travel.
Excellent tree behind the church .. fulfills a wish ..5 +
Like many other Armenian monasteries, it is a very beautiful, prayed place. But I do not advise you to go separately to it - just include it in the route of a long trip.
