Goa Gajah is a thousand-year-old magnificent temple with several ponds surrounded by lush trees and beautiful surroundings. It was a calm and soothing experience. This place is less busy when compared to other popular locations in the Ubud region. Goa Gajah was missing informational signage to provide history about this temple.

There were two temples here: Buddhist and Hindu (XI and IX century). Also, there is a Goa Gajah itself - the Elephant Cave with the entrance through the Bomas mouth. Theres a temple inside with the places for meditation. You can walk around to see a beautiful nature, big stones of the Buddhist temple ruined during the earthquake in 1917, small waterfall, a pond. The entrance ticket for an adult foreigner - 50k IRD.Dont forget to take your sorong, or you will have to buy it before you come in.

One of the more serene places in Bali that wasnt overrun by people. It actually felt really peaceful and we could take our time looking at the different fountains and temples. Highly would recommend coming by here if youre looking for a breather between visiting more popular temples.Note: Visited prior to COVID, so things may be slightly different.

Just recently went there with my daughter during pandemic. It is sad because pretty empty and probably when we were there only more.or less 10 people. It is a beautiful scenery , has a temple surrounded by trees and landscapes. Here you can feel relaxing and peaceful. The entrance fee for local still the same, adult 20k and kid 15k. Its a cool place but there are no educational/informative signs around. The history of the site is very interesting but if you just visited it you wouldnt know that it was a thousand year old forest temple for both Buddhists and Hindus. If you walk down past the main cave there is a lotus pond and a cool mossy bridge overlooking the ruins of a Buddhist temple.

A wonderful Historical place. Would definitely suggest to hire a local guide, so that you get to know the century old history of the temples. I hired one, and got to know how thousands years ago, Buddhism and Hinduism came to the island, and how the temple was built. In an earthquake some 50-60 years ago, the massive statue fell down, some parts of the temple also broke. Inside the cave the king used to meditate and till this date, priests do regular rituals twice a day.

A few tips, don’t buy the sarongs the lady will try to force you to buy in the parking lot as you are getting dropped off, or outside of the temples. Goa Gajah is a beautiful temple in Ubud. Please make sure your legs are covered. You do get free sarongs at the entrance so you don’t need to buy one. There is an entry fee for the temple you can look it up. You have to climb down a lot of stairs, so people with knee issues can avoid. There is no other way to go down but the stairs. Surprisingly you get beer and other drinks in the complex. The Lilly pond is beautiful but that is also further down. If you are up for it you can explore that area.

Nice temple, with several area to visit. The entry price per person for non-indonesians is set at 50,000 and includes everything you need to wear to enter the temple respectfully, so basically you can come with regular clothing like shorts and t-shirt, no worries. This is a very spiritual place for the local people and therefore you have to wear a sarong before entering. It’s not that big and better to visit in the early hours of the day.PS: if you climb the stairs up to the Buddha Tempel u can follow a very narrow path to the right and keep walking through the bush for around 500-600 meters. You will find 2 ceremonial bathing places two meditating caves (with Buddha status). After that u will get to the river where you can find the Buddha caves. They were rediscovered I. The early 1900. Goa Gajah is locally known as Elephant Cave because of its proximity to the Elephant River. A mysterious cave, relics, and ancient bathing pools set amid green rice paddies and garden. Such an overrated, busy tourist attraction, this one you can skip and nothing worthy. The cave itself is actually quite small. As you enter through a dark, narrow passage. To the left is a statue of Ganesh. To the right holds a worship area. The real draw of Goa Gajah is the beautiful surrounding. We walked from Ubud to Goa Gajah. It’s about 3km. The road is narrow and busy on a Sunday and often there is no proper sidewalk. But we enjoyed the walk and passed local stores, stone and wood carvers as well as sculpture artists, rice fields, and beautiful lush green hills and forests. Yes the raid was busy, dusty, polluted. Despite it, it was an experience we are happy we made. Once we arrived at Goa Gajah we were able to cool down and centre ourselves again. The water from the lady fountains in the baths was so fresh and the elephant cave had a very special (meditative-subtle) feeling to it inside. I was impressed.
