The highest altitude railway station on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways in the state of west bengal, India. This is a symbollic and iconic station and an UNESCO world heritage sight. The station is about 25 minutes away from Darjeeling.
The UNESCO accepted Darjeeling Himalayan Railway toy train that passes from here as a world heritage site. The train makes steep climbs through a number of reverses and loops promising an enthralling view. One of the most heart-stirring being the Batasia Loop between Ghum and Darjeeling.Construction of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway began in 1879 and the railway track reached Ghum on 4 April 1881. Until 1878, the journey from Kolkata to Darjeeling took a week’s time. When Siliguri was put on the railway map of India the journey time reduced to two days. Thereafter, it became a 3–4 hours journey to Ghum by the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. This station is nothing less than a beauty personified! A decade of painstaking hard work that flaunts one of the most exemplified architectures of Indian history. No wonder UNESCO was wowed by it and bestowed it with a heritage status. It is India’s busiest railway station. After climbing from Siliguri to Ghum, the train starts descending about 1,000 ft (300 m) to Darjeeling, first crossing the graceful double loop at Batasia (meaning windy place).Ghum is (falsely) claimed by some tourist literature to be the highest railway station in the world. It never was. Chicla station at 3,724 m (12,218 ft) in Peru opened in 1878. The Tanggula railway station on the Qingzang railway in China and Tibet, opened in 2006, is at5,068 m (16,627 feet). In Switzerland, the Jungfraubahn (JB) is a 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) rack railway which runs 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) from Kleine Scheidegg to the highest railway station in Europe at Jungfraujoch (elevation 3,471 m, 11,388 ft).

Highest railway station of India .....DHR- DARJEELING HIMALAYAN RAILWAY...YOU ARE going to found trains running on COAL here.....just terrific to watch that ....love it .....trains normally take av. 7 hours from here to Siliguri through kurseong. Trains are normally with 2 coaches ....one AC and the other is normal ....fare is quite expensive.
We were walking from the toy train station to the monetary, one km away, and he best is to use the rail tracks, as there are only a few trains per day. And then, when they arrive, they whistle loudly and all the time to make sure everyone is aware of their passage. Thats always a spectacle to watch them passing by, just a few cm away from the wall on one side, and from he cars on the other.

Nice historical place
To the tour to Darjeeling i took a Steam engine ride which looks and sounds more authentic on the Darjeeling Himalyan Railway from Darjeeling to Ghum and back to Darjeeling. The station is about 2 kms from the main town and one can either hire a car or share a car to reach the station. There are ticket counters in the station from where the tickets can be bought or it can be also bought online through the IRCTC website where other information such as ticket rates, departure times etc. There are also trains which go to Kurseong and Siliguri and back from here. One can also reach Darjeeling by toy train from Siliguri and I am told the entire journey is a mesmerizing one as the trains slowy winds it’s way up the mountain, through small towns, tea gardens, crosses the road to Darjeeling in several places but it takes about 8-9 hrs in a steam engine to reach Darjeeling Station. Deisal takes a litte less time.If one has the time then one can certainly take this mode of transportation and enjoy the beauty. The train stops at a place called Batasia Loop which is a War Memorial for 15 mins where one can get down and go around and then it stops at the Railway Museum in Ghum for half hr.The joy ride is approx. for two and half hrs including the stops. It was a once in a lifetime experience and the first for us in a UNESCO declared heritage site.
Popular & nice place. Amazing climate. Enjoy this atmosphere.
