In the Puranas, there is mention of shraddh of ancestors in Gaya. According to the Puranas, after getting the groom from the demon god named Gaiasur and misusing it, he started harassing the gods. Unhappy with the tyranny of Gaiasur, Gods went to the shelter of Lord Vishnu and prayed that they should liberate them from the tyranny of Gaiasur. On the prayers of the gods, Lord Vishnu placed his right foot on his head and pushed it inside the earth. After pushing the demon into the ground, the footprints of Lord Vishnu remained on the surface, which are still present. Later Lord Vishnu bestowed salvation on Gaya by placing a stone on his head. That stone still exists in the Vishnupad temple of Gaya. After killing Vishnu by Lord Vishnu, he was considered the liberator of Gaya Tirtha. It is said that by performing Shradh and Tarpan in Gaya, a person attains heaven. Pindadan is delivered to the ancestors by performing pindadan in Phantasila, about eight kilometers from Gaya. It is said that the Pitras are liberated by performing pindadan near the Vishnupad temple and near the Akshayavat on the banks of the river Falgu in Pitrupaksha.Shantakaram Bhujagasayanam Padmanabhan Suresham,Vishvadharan Gaganasadrasham Meghvarnam Shubhangam |Lakshmikantam Kamalanayanan Yogibhirdhyanagyam,Vande Vishnu Bhavabhayaharan Sarvalokakanatham ||
