Head Special:The plane of the temple is 35 feet high and looks majestic without the shadow.Another highlight of the temple is the statues of 63 Nayans and 16 types of lingams.Pride:The city of Erode has been practicing vegetarianism since ancient times. The name Erode is derived from the fact that it is located between two streams. Although Maruvi was later named as Erode, it is believed that the name was derived from the fact that the people of Erode excelled in Shiva worship. It is said that Lord Shiva, the ruler of the south of the country, got his name from the fact that his head was wet with his wife Ganga on his head.According to the literature, the city of Erode was known as Maranthai, Mayilai and Artha Kabalapuri as the creative god Brahma forgot himself and worshiped Shiva here. The Magimaliswar Temple in Erode is one of the oldest Shiva temples in Kongu. Lord Shiva, who is revered as the servant of the devotees in this shrine located towards the west, has been blessing Mahalingam with Goddess Mangalambika.Head History:There are two views on the history of the temple. The descendants of Sri Lankan King Ravana were excellent Shiva devotees. Among them were Mali, Sumali and Magimali who were on a pilgrimage to the Himalayas where Lord Shiva resides and were returning to their country. One of the rituals of worship is for the devotees of Shiva to perform Sandhyavanthanam in the evening. Night was approaching when the three of them arrived in the Erode area today.Ravanas ancestors, who did not miss out on worship, completed the Sandhyavanthana Puja by consecrating a six - foot - tall idol of Mahalinga on the south bank of the Cauvery in a densely wooded area. The temple is dedicated to the lingam they consecrated and is best worshiped. Ithalam is also known as Mahimaleeswaram as it is dedicated and worshiped by Mahimali with the special name of Mali. There is another opinion on the origin of this temple. Under the control of the Pallava kings who ruled Tamil Nadu, the Chitra kings of the Irukuvelir dynasty ruled over the areas between Pandya and Chola. It is believed that the temple was named after King Mahimali Irukvel, who ruled the Kongu region of the Chola Empire in the 10th century AD. Sundarar, along with his goddesses Paravaiyar and Sangiliyar, performed penance for the hero of the place, Mahimaleeswara. Cheraman Peruman Nayanar, who was engaged in Sivath Thondi at that time, has served the three of them by throwing kavari. The scene is sculpted in the temple.
