First visit to this place and it’s alright. It’s very popular so booking is recommended. I am a vegetarian and whilst they say on the limited menu they can adapt, all that means is tofu, tofu and more tofu. I had 3 starters which were large portions. They recommended 3 but I was full before the main course arrived. The main I chose was pad Thai again adapted using tofu. Very tasty but by this stage I’d had enough. No desserts on menu and the coffee machine was broken. Staff were pretty good but didn’t ask once if meal was ok. My partner disliked the chicken Polynesian and didn’t finish it. Very pricey and the decor is a bit dated now.
The Taste of Bangkok platter was great except for the Moo Ping Ribs which were too chewy. Sushi was average. Sukhothai Noodle tastes authentic for Thais.Love the Zen style, vibe and music. Food came quick. Staff should stand at the front of the house to greet customers as we had to wait quite a while before being seated.I would recommend this restaurant if you like Asian/Thai food.
Seriously great food and service, waiter recommended the weeping tiger but with the lamb shank, wow...... I asked for it to be extra spicy and they didnt disappoint.
Lush food and such great customer service.Visited today 31/07/2021, and thoroughly enjoyed the food. It was very tasting and filling but for me, what really stood out was the customer service. Few issues with the order initially but resolved really quickly and seamlessly. Also, I needed a place to pray so I asked the lady in a white top (sorry I didn’t get your name but manager maybe?) for a quiet place and she was so kind to direct me and my husband to a small quiet corner. For me, this is what going above and beyond for your customers means and she definitely deserves some recognition for this. Would visit again! One thing I would add and would love to see, please make the chicken halal! :)
The food is just amazing we over ordered a bit as we wanted to try some different things. Without a doubt the best ribs Ive ever tasted in UK, well done guys, see you next time.
Excellent food. Couldnt fault it.Service was a bit slow at times but it was busy, probably because the food is so good.Staff were very friendly and very helpful.
Food was excellent and the restaurant atmosphere was very pleasant. However, the service could have been better. We had booked a table for 2 hours but were kicked out after just over an hour. The table next to us had been there before us, yet we were told our table was needed while they were allowed to stay. There were also no dessert options available.
Superb food, Indonesian rice bowl is unreal. Great service
It was the best food I had in my trip to Durham ! Especially the young lady I guess her name was tarana she was amazing very happy with her service
Delicious food and generous portions. Staff are really attentive and friendly, so service is excellent. A little of the pricey side, but its worth it.
Delicious and fancy Thai food restaurant. This restaurant has an amazing design both on the outside and inside. The place will make you fill relaxed in no time. The service is great as well, they take your order as quick as they serve you your food.Despite how the place might look, the prices are not that high and they do not ask for a certain way of dressing.I can personally recommend that you try the noodles, I think you won’t regret it.
Great food, great ambiance, decor very clever and not sure where all the comments have come from on the service. It’s a little slow but not too much. Quite pricey even for Thai food but it’s actually worth it and you are in a city centre. The food was incredible, could happily dine here every night just to try everything. Highly recommended.
Ive had takeaway from this place a few times now, does not disappoint for portions and taste. Will defiantly be back.
Very hit and miss. Food is generally nice but you need to have tried a few things and know what to order as some dishes are incredible, while others are absolute rubbish. For example the seafood Pad Thai, dumplings and gyoza are gorgeous, curries are decent, starters are lovely, but bento boxes are completely wrong, their ramen soups are...well, dont even bother with those, much better from a takeaway or homemade. And while kitchen staff is very friendly and responsive, floor staff is actually such a massive let down of the place. They need a new manager, proper training in customer service, food handling and a friendlier attitude. On our visit they were very hostile, got so many things wrong, argued about a dish that they got wrong as well and put both the wrong dish and the replacement on the bill. They took over 30 mins to approach our table, we had to call them every time. Didnt even get asked once how the food was. The surfaces were very dusty as well. Clearly the staff working there doesnt care about presentation or hygiene. Its such a shame because the restaurant itself is beautiful. All in all, our experience was unpleasant and very negative, we all left massively dissapointed. Definitely wont go back. For those prices I expected way better.
There is only so long you put up with these rude muppets before you just have to walk out... even for Durham its an over-rated 1 star dive
Wonderful food and atmosphere. Beef rendang is delicious and service is smooth. Im a returning customer and will definitely go back again and again and again.....
Best food weve had so far in Zen. Gets better every time.
Never had a bad meal in Zen and today the food was exceptionally good. Lovely to get out in a restaurant even if outside in the well organised seating area. Highly recommended
Had a lovely lunch today, great food, great service especially from Martin who went above and beyond, would highly recommend this restaurant, this is the second time Ive eaten there and extremely impressed
£49 down.I ordered from here because my wife thought it might be really nice and has heard good things about it, so we thought we might try a nice romantic fancy takeaway. This was the price for one shared starter, 2 mains and some fries....First of all it was £3 for a small box of fries, which I couldnt eat because they were just like sticks of rubber, my teeth were bouncing off them, I can say in complete honesty, Macdonalds fries are much better. The main meal was average at best and £5 of the price was for delivery, I thought it was going to arrive by helicopter, but it was a girl in a car.I would rather have had a chippie for 2 at a quarter of the price.
Good atmosphere... friendly staff...First class food.... recommend.
Nice place, food is ok but I was expecting more from the previous reviews.
As always, food was spectacular, cant be beaten
Excellent food, excellent atmosphere, excellent staff. All in all a great experience and would recommend to any fan of asian flavours.
Lovely food and staff. Authentic food. Prices arent cheap but its all worth every penny. Not tried it for takeaway yet but its on my list too very soon
Very tasty food, good service
Great food, at very reasonable price. All the staff were very considerate and the attention was good.
Excellent service, food and staff.Recommended to all of our friends.
First thing you notice when you go in is the big pink tree in the middle of the room which is a lovely feature. Makes the place a bit more memorable. For my main I went for a combination of meats with basmati rice. Portion was good. Meat was delicious and cooked well. Wasnt chewy. Rice was cooked perfectly. Service was good despite it being busy. We went during eat out to help out so price was good but I think if you went any other time, for what you get, its a little too much. The staters are 7.50 for 3 mini skewers and a load of shredded cabbage. Although they tasted good there wasnt much. If it wasnt for the price it would have been 5 stars.
We have had several meals at Zen and ordered several take-away meals and service, food and staff have always been fantastic. Tried to place an order on Wednesday for Monday to be told to ring back Friday or order online as can only order 3 days on advance of order date, which is fair enough. Message online asking to ring to place order to get 25% discount. Rang back today to be asked to place order online or ring back Monday if want discount off order. Staff not aware of advice on site to ring with order. Sorry Im not messing about. Your staff need to be consistent with advice to customers and be aware of what is on your website advising customers. 😞 Will certainly reconsider ordering again if this is the level of service and advice offered
EAT HERE! We found this place by chance thanks to Google maps and dropped in. We were seated without a reservation which was a bonus! The place was lively and the smell was great. The drinks and food menu offered plenty of choice and we found it difficult to pick! We ordered too much in the end, woohoo! We can recommend the noodle broths, we LOVED the Sukuthai and wonton soup, super tasty, be warned these are full meal in their own right! A rookie mistake for us. We did find room to eat the delicious soft and fluffy bao buns we ordered on the side, Pork Char Sui and Chicken Satay, beautiful! What we didnt need to order was the extra Thai BBQ platter, we had to take this home, but, we did eat a little bit of it....anyway, this was all washed down with a cocktail and made for an overall excellent value meal and we cant wait to visit this place again. Lovely restaurant, lovely staff, lovely food! yum!
Food was amazing as was the service couldnt fault any of it
Really nice fresh food, tasty and decent price
Never been before until yester omg it was amazing
Went for lunch in the outdoor area on the car park. Food was excellent as always but the dining area was disappointing - no social distancing re tables at all, hard wooden benches without cushions/throws and heating poor.
Great food and service
Amazing food and service.
Dont sit in the outside sitting area not very good Tables that slope and the gas heater had no gas
Fabulous food as always can recommend the king prawn star starter gorgeous service was great cant wait to go back
Great venue for a Covid safe wedding
Gorgeous food and great service
Paid £61 to have to ask the entirely useless waitress do everything twice. She forgot our drinks, our cutlery, 1 of the 2 main meals for the table next to us and all drinks forgotten on the table behind. On top of this she didnt know any of the items on the menu and we had to point to everything we wanted - all while watching a drunken girl queue to get in with her nipple hanging out and the table over from us having a domestic.Food was alright.
Really nice food
Great food and great service
Very nice food and service
Great food and great service
One of the tastiest meals I have had in the North East. Would highly recommend this place. Lovely seating areas under purple flowers and other ornaments around make a pleasant dining experience. Decent portion sizes and great value for money. Was not crowded during lunch but would recommend booking at nights especially Friday and Weekends.
This is a firm favourite at lunchtimes for me and many others in my office. Great Thai food for reasonable prices (at lunchtimes) plus a 10% discount for Durham University staff and students make this a nice treat. Prices jump at about 5pm though, so go during the day if possible. Great atmosphere and service.
The Tom yum soup is good, Sukothai my comfort food) nice, lamb shank curry nicely cooked. However service is only good by the non-Asians. If you like to come to this place and want feel like you owe some of them a millionaire baht just to get some decent Asian food be my guest. There’s quite a few better restaurant in the same area. The Thai place at the food pit is also very good and you will feel so much more welcome there any day.
It was amazing to be able to return to Zen today after lockdown...The food was amazing and the staff were fantastic.. We will be back soon
Ordered a meal to takeaway. Ready promptly. The restaurant itself had a friendly atmosphere with safety features to ensure covid19 precautions. Some confusion with the bill which was quickly rectified. Food was delicious
Amazing food and a wonderful atmosphere, the interior adds a lovely feel. Often fully booked so Id recommend calling ahead to avoid disappointment
Stunning food. Highly recommended
Splendid private outdoor space and food.
My boyfriend and I had gone for a mini holiday to Durham in the 1st week of October and on the first night there we opted to go for Thai food for dinner . My boyfriend went for the pad Thai , while I went for the Polynesian Chicken curry and basmati rice. We both loved the food there and if we are in Durham again we wont mind going back for another takeaway.
Amazing food and excellent service
One of best restaurants in the north east
Sugar. The restaurant looks lovely but all the food tastes of sugar. If you want a nice looking restaurant then this is for you. If you want your food to taste of anything other than sugar then go somewhere else.
Food was really nice but if you want to relax and enjoy your meal, definitely dont book a table late on. We were only in there just over an hour and the waitress kept coming over, standing, staring and then asking are you finished yet. Someone in our group went to the toilet and on the way out the manager literally said are you leaving, were closed.Cant knock the food but for the price, the service was not worth it. Big shame.
The food is delicious and caters for gluten free.
Always fab food xx
Their food is usually amazing. However, the last time Ive been there their pad Thai had a funny taste. I would still recommend it though!
Highly recommended
On the first day of our visit arriving in Durham, we spontaneously decided to order a takeout from Zen (around 7.15pm). They had a separate takeaway place (which you can order from inside and collect) - Zen2Go. The staff were very friendly and hospitable; there was indoor seating to wait for the food and not very busy for a Thursday night. I ordered the Pad Thai dish with Rice Noodles and Lime. Delicious and tasty - they even gave us free chopsticks!
Fabulous restaurant that is now doing deliveries and collections. We chose two option 1 meals to collect. We delivered one to a family member that is shielding. The other was as an Anniversary treat to ourselves. It was great news when The Mrs found they were open for (safe socially distanced) business again. We had a lovely night off enjoying to food, with no cooking or cleaning required. It’s a great restaurant. We’ve used it many times over the years.
It used to be amazing but there appeared to be a change in management and it hasnt been as good since. Food and ambience is still good but the customer service is insincere and weve had a few bad experiences there now. We used to be regular, now were not.
Amazing food
Thai food init
Oh Buddha me is possibly the nicest curry in the world! Always a pleasure dining here.
Food was delicious! The space is lush and when we walked into Zen the staff gave us a warm welcome. Top quality, highly recommend. The tom yum took us back to our trip to Thai Land. Will come back if we find ourselves in Durham again 😊
Just collected our meals for my celebratory birthday tea. Hot, tasty and as always absolutely delicious. Thank you Zen
