Absolute must-visit if youre in Dunedin. Top quality Japanese food at really reasonable prices. Great flavours, great portion sizes and friendly staff. The mini rice balls are a definite must-try.

From my first ever date here, to many meals since, I have enjoyed every single one of them. The food is absolutely fantastic, the staff are always an absolute joy, the price is beyond affordable (although dont tell them, they might put it up!), and the overall experience is always a 6/5. Great location, and beautifully designed with two floor levels and vibrant decor. The food was very well presented and tasted delicious for that great Japanese food experience. Staff is friendly and very helpful. Will go here again for another lovely dinner and some warm sake

Amazing food and staff. We arrived on the evening of the Midwinter Carnival and the place was pumping. The staff were super friendly and organised and we were well looked after.The food took a little longer than we had hoped, as we had two starving kids, but it was to be expected since the place was packed. The only improvement we could have thought of would be having some kids activities available. Even if it was just paper and pencils, it would have helped a lot with out wait.Once the food arrived, we were all very happy. Great bento box, curry, sushi balls etc. You cant go wrong with almost anything on the menu.If youre looking for a nice night out, Jizo can definitely make it happen. Bookings recommended on busy nights!

Amazing Japanese, best I’ve had since going to Japan! We came here for dinner on our first and last night in Dunedin (it was that tasty)! The restaurant can be quite busy but we didn’t need to wait for longer than 10 minutes for a table. The food is very cheap for the size of meal you get comparative with other Japanese restaurants. There is a whole vegetarian and vegan menu, as well as “normal” menu. There are also some clever twists like Paleo sushi which substituted rice with cauliflower and cream cheese (which was delicious)! The wait staff are young and really onto it and friendly. Highly recommended!

The food was so bad! The katsu curry tasted like rehydrated ox cubes, we also got “ramen” and to be honest iv made better 2 minute noodles. Can’t say I’ll be back

Will not be returning, I ordered the Jizo deluxe Katsu which is meant to have both chicken and pork in the meal. I only received chicken and when I told the manager about this she told me that I was lying and asked if I could tell the difference between chicken and pork. Making a customer feel like you think we are dumb and a liar is not OK. And to make things worse you tried to say it was the same price as the chicken Katsu which is a lie. The Deluxe is $20 and the chicken Katsu is $16.50, learn how to deal with customer complaints that should be the first thing you learn how to do as a manager. Very rude and condescending. no discount was given and a fake apology.

Was recommended by friends to try this place out as they very much enjoyed the food. I went last week for a friends birthday with a large group of people and overall did not enjoy my time, quite frankly my experience was not a nice one. One server forced one of my friends and I to order more food which was just nonsense, she also kept trying to take our food away when we were still eating from said plate -to conclude the server did not treat or speak to us nicely which had quite an effect on my whole evening. When my friends and I were all paying we were charged an extra $9 for something we didnt even order. Food was also undercooked. Disappointed and will not be coming back.

Good staff, very accommodating and kind. I had to go to work and had 20mins but the guy taking my order fast forwarded it to the chef and I got it in 10 mins though there was a big line of orders. And yea the food is tasty.

Standard Japanese menu. Service is limited and slightly slow. Price is fairly low. Teriyaki flavor was not bad, but wasnt great either.

A regular of mine cause its consistently good and in a convenient place. Usually opt for a poke bowl but the sushi, karaage chicken and sashimi are other favourites of mine that are delicious.

Besides the lovely atmosphere the sushi is fantastic a priced amazingly well.The sushi come with a dish for soy sauce and you get nice chopsticks not wooden ones.Im in love with the art on the walls and the service is great.Warning: this place is packed!

Worst japanese that i have ever eaten (been in Japan few times) and i’ve never tasted such a bad rice. Worst rice ever to be honest. Looks like they’ve stocked the rice in a tupperware case for a week, then warmed in the microwave and finally served to the client.Crowded because of the BYO, definitely not for their « food ». And the service was terrible. Not even a smile, they dont bring you water / chopsticks if you dont ask...

Huge fan of Japanese cuisine so, I had to try Jizo! Really enjoyed the variety of sushi available only issue is the confined seating areas but other than that, love it!!

The most delicious sushi in Dunedin. Great ambience, with a range of seating options - from the cool mezzanine cosy dining to the big group table experience. Jizo has a great menu - its not only the sushi thats tasty - and is very popular, so booking is recommended to ensure you get a seat.

Best Japanese in town!!!

We use to have a shop a block away and this this where we choose to dine on those days when Im just too exhausted to cook. When this place changed hands, they added a lot to the menu which I felt was not unnecessary. It only confused us and we ended up ordinating the food in the old menu. It could be crowded at dinner time so it pays to book. There is a little second floor nook where there is more privacy and could be a romantic space. The owners are very good and hospitable.

My best Japanese by far

We love Jiso, it’s our regular go to place. The food is always good. Hopefully the new system(new owners?) is going to work in their favour...unfortunately we waited for a VERY long time (over an hour) for our food tonight which is unusual. Also, I would suggest a better sound system.Post script: Food arrived, delicious and drinks on the house. All is well.

Ambiance is not good for children as patrons are too loud. Very unfortunate night for me maybe as I feel deaf when I received my food as it took ages to arrive. No issues if only the surrounding is calm and a little bit quiet. And that particular group was considerate enough to tone down their voices as they were truly speaking from the top of their lungs.

The food is always exceptional! Great place to relax and kick back! If there is one thing Id like to suggest that would be great is if someone would take your order at the table instead of having to get back up and order at the counter. Aside from that - amazing place! The food... ahhh the food!! So good!

By far one of Dunedins best restaurants! Jizo can do great sit down and takeaway meals good for students, couples or families. Huge, delicious selection of Japanese food (sushi, donburi,Service was great and very helpful staff as my friend and I hadnt been to a Japanese restaurant before. We got the Bento and next time we would like to try a variety of other dishes

Not a fan of the new system where you can’t see a menu. You get coerced the minute you walk through the door and seated and there’s no place you can stand and read the menu. The old system was so much better, especially since you feel obliged to order something as your sat down and given water. You should want to order food not feel pushed into it.

Great value Japanese food in central Dunedin. We always eat here on any visit to Dunedin. Not fine dining, but you wont be disappointed. Try the deep fried Teriyaki tofu. !

Had a nice after work dinner with colleagues. Friendly service and a nice menu selection. Recommended anything with Japanese curry - great flavors.

They do good sushi with unique selection. But the rest of menu feels rather less exciting. No table service for a large space, finding a seat on your own and wait in a long line is a standard thing here.

They seat too many people for what the kitchen can deal with plus take away orders. The last few times I have been, theres been at least a 45 minute wait from ordering to getting my meal. There are plenty of other options for great Japanese food in town.
