Located right opposite the Buddha statue on a hill, Diskit monastery was built back in 14th century.The monastery can be reached by climbing a flight of steps and also has a statue of Maitreya Buddha in the prayer hall. The monastery also offers the best views of Nubra Valley. Its worth coming here just for the ability to photograph Diskit Buddha statue with the backdrop of Nubra Valley. Unfortunately my phone and camera batteries were dead by the time we reached there, so all the photos were clicked while on the way upto the monastery or from the Buddha statue.
Beautiful monastery and a must visit when visiting Nubra. The building architecture is unique and situated on the hilltop. Opposite the monastery is the 106 ft statue of Maitreya Buddha overlooking the valley. There are 3 temples inside the monastery, one dedicated to the protector deities Mahakali and Sri Devi, one of Shakyamuni and the last one of Buddha. There is one more temple but was not open during our visit because of the Maintenance work going on. Interestingly this Gompa is one of the 4 Gompas that belongs to Hemis Group.
Diskit Monastery is often said to be the oldest and the largest Buddhist Monastery in all Nubra Valley. I often saw the photograph of this milky white and brick color bordered Tibetan Gompa nested in some mountain in Nubra valley. That is basically Diskit monastery. It is almost at the meeting point where Nubra river meets Shyok river. After entering Diskit monastery, there are two parts. In one side you can find a huge Maitrey Buddha statue which signifies peace and protection. And the other part is the stairs towards the old temple and monastery. We started climbing the stairs and stopped at each level to see the gorgeous view and also the old rooms and walls of the monastery. Lachung temple is the oldest temple in Nubra region which is situated in higher floor of the monastery. Inside the prayer hall there are huge images of the Buddhist guardian deities. Somewhere huge drums are found, some illuminated oil lamps, meditation halls, posters and wall paintings and a very peaceful environment. Free tea is also served up in the monastery. Diskit monastery is the best one till now in terms of peacefulness. It is indeed a delight the soul.

After several stops in between we reached Diskit Monastry ( also known as Diskit Gumpha). It was built in 14th century by Changzen Tserab Zangpo and is situated on a hill. There is a statue of Maitreya Buddha near the Gumpha looking at the valley. This statue was inaugurated by HH Dalai Lama. The view of the valley from the base of the statue is breathtaking.
Its a must visit place in the outskirts of Diskit. Its a hilltop monastery that offers stunning views of surrounding mountains and deep valleys and ofcourse a huge Buddha statue. It really is a marvelous Buddha statue. You can drive right to the top of the hill almost to the feet of Buddha Statue. However do climb up to the monastery and do visit their Cafe which offers variety of tea for free to the visitors.Its a place where one can also meditate.
Standing tall at 108ft is the Gorgeous Buddha statue. The monastery should be hiked. Theres a gift shop for souvenirs and a small bakery sorts. The view from the Gompa is beautiful and you can see desert storms and magnificent sunsets at 8PM
This impressive 32 metre (106 foot) statue on top of a hill below the monastery, faces down the Shyok River towards Pakistan. It is said that the statue was built with three main functions in mind - protection of Diskit Village, prevention of further war with Pakistan, and to promote world peace. Truly an out of the world experience. The grand larger than life statue at Diskit Gompa is visible from many kilometres away. You start to realise how great it is as you reach nearer. Once you reach there it feels like you are in heaven.The terrain in the vicinity and the geographic landscape around this monastery is simply heavenly. You are left speechless once you are at the foot of this magnanimous buddha statue. The design and the colors are magical and unbelievably intricate.The drive towards the monastery is scenic and the anticipation of witnessing such an amazing monastery keeps you excited throughout the journey. When we visited here it wasn’t much crowded and we got to experience the place without any hassles.I suggest you stop at this monastery on your way to Nubra Valley. It is definitely worth the drive. The view from the top is also amazing. Unfortunately when we reached there the sky got cloudy so we couldn’t get to witness the desert landscape against clear blue sky.

Good and peaceful place. Its a bit at the outskirts but worth taking out some time to visit here. You can meditate and enjoy the beautiful 360 degree scenic views from the hill top.

An incredible monestry to visit. I would suggest dont click photos but just be there in the moment and feel the energy in the atmosphere. Also many people dont visit the old monestry so I would say do visit it.
Good monastery to visit if you’re venturing north of khardung la. Very open space and a large Buddha statue. From the courtyard you can entire valley and adjoining river. Whole compound is well maintained. It also has a restaurant, shop, public toilet and hotel rooms available

Ladakh was amazing. Something about that place keeps calling you back. Diskit and Hunder were amazing and we had an amazing time over there which was much more beautiful than these pictures. If you can, do go to Turtuk which is further ahead.

One of the best place in Ladakh.. Very big statue of lord buddha, 360 view is awesome. Very peaceful.Its on certain height so the view is amazing. Greenery, river then mountains and u may find some rain too clearly coming towrds you. On the way to Nubra valley you may find it. Diskit Monastery also known as Deskit Gompa or Diskit Gompa is the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery (gompa) in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh, northern India.It belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It was founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsong Khapa, founder of Gelugpa, in the 14th century. It is a sub-gompa of the Thikse gompa.Lachung Temple and Hundur Monastery are also located nearby, the latter is below the main road near a bridge.The monastery has statue of Cho Rinpoche (Crowned Buddha) in the prayer hall, a huge drum and several images of fierce guardian deities. An elevated cupola of the monastery depicts a fresco of the Tashilhunpo Monastery of Tibet.The monastery administration runs a school, with support from a non-government organization known as the Tibet Support Group, which has computer facilities and teaches science subjects, in English, to Tibetan children of the region.A popular festival known as Dosmoche or the Festival of the Scapegoat is held in the precincts of the monastery in February during the winter season, which is largely attended by people from villages of the Nubra Valley since the other regions in Leh are inaccessible during this period due to heavy snow fall.

This is a very famous and historical monestry in Nubra vally. Diskit.There is a huge bank of nubra river which is originted from siachen glacier.Very beautiful and heaven like place in ladakh. So peaceful and calm. Away from the noise and rush of the city. There is a huge, beautiful and colourful statue of Buddha situated near this monestry which can be seen from 10km away.Nearby village is hunder, which is almost 8km away from here.There is also sand dunes near hunder village . Which has amazingly beautiful scenic view of Himalaya mountains.World famous Highest motorable pass Khardungla is on the way to this place.

Beautiful huge statue of Lord Buddha. place on the way from Lah to Hunder at Nubra valley. Surrounded by Huge Karakoram and Ladakh range. Near to this place is sangam of Shayok and Nubra river. Once you cross Khardugla pass, you may face low oxygen saturation problems on the way to Diskit Gompa, better to carry oxygen cylinder with you. Siachin Glacier is 90 km from here. Aside from the fact that it has a huge statue of Buddha, which is really awe inspiring and is easily visible from miles away. The statue literally makes you bow in honor.Also the views from this place are simply stunning. You can see the entire Nubra Valley from here, the river flowing through the middle of the desert, snow clad mountains.
