My third trip to Dhaka; was for a member of the Jury at the 16th Asian Art Biennial. As a jury, they hosted us at the Dhaka Club. Quite an old building from the British colony era. One of the few places where alcohol is served in the city. Choose one of the new hotels to stay.

Dhaka Club originally an all-white association and now a premier elitist social association. After the partition of bengal in 1905, dhaka was made the capital of the new province of Eastern Bengal and Assam. The British civilians, who came to govern the new province, felt the need of a social club in the model of the Bengal Club of Calcutta. Dhaka Club was thus founded on 19 August 1911. The club is located at Shahbag and surrounded by university of dhaka, bangladesh national museum, Hotel Sheraton, birdem Hospital, Ramna Garden and the Suhrawardy Uddyan.Dhaka ClubThe founding members were Lt. Col. E A Hall (Civil Surgeon, Dhaka), C R Bryan, H G Bally (Commandant, Military Police Battalion, Dhaka), J O Rennie (PWD, Dhaka), and J S Wilson and A T Halliday of Indian Police, Dhaka. The club was granted legal status on 14 September1911 under the Indian Companies Act of 1882.Soon after its establishment, it became a club of both local and foreign elite, though white dominance continued down to 1947. The land of the club was leased out from the dhaka nawab estate. The membership of the club grew quickly in the 1920s and 30s when many Europeans came to Dhaka in connection with the jute trade, steam navigation, the railway, and estate management. In 1941, the Governor of Bengal leased out a tract of land comprising 524 bighas (173 acres) to the Dhaka Club. The club used the land to develop a racecourse (known as ramna racecourse, now converted into Ramna Garden), a golf course, the club buildings and playgrounds. At present, the club has only about 5 acres of land in its control. On this space, it has facilities for meetings and seminars, as well as hall rooms, guest-rooms, kitchens and dining rooms, playing courts and rooms for table tennis, billiards, cards, squash, and lawn tennis, and a swimming pool.

Governor of Eastern Bengal and Assam on 20 August, 1906 laid the foundation stone of Dhaka Club Ltd. on 19 August, 1911.With the departure of the British in 1947, Dhaka Club gradually transformed itself, adjusting to new needs and demands. After the independence of 1947 from British rule, Bengalis who qualified as members of the Dhaka Club came mainly from the influential and anglicized rungs of the society. Others were senior civil and military bureaucrats, police officials and businessmen.With the Liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971, the last vestiges of the colonial past were shed off giving way to a truly indigenous identity. The club now continues to be a secular space as well as an avenue for leisure, recreation and sport for the elite of the society.

Biggest club in Dhaka. Good facilities are available. But service is very poor. Maximum facilities are old fashioned. Have 4 venues for any events. Food cost less than standard. But service charge has no limit.

One of the famous convention centers for arranging several types of ceremonies. Though the area is not large enough to accommodate the larger amount its perfect for arranging 300 to 500 guests. Catering is also good. The last but not least, behavior of the staffs is remarkable. Their entrance and exit road is very charming. If you couldnt find the way, just ask the guards and theyll locate it..

If a place known to maintain its authenticity then its Dhaka Club.I had an opportunity to hang out with my buddies on a saturday evening in the extended bar area.We ordered some chinese, chicken kebabs and their signature pizza.Drink wise they had a wide selection.Non members are welcome if they accompany a member and you have to register your name at the front desk.
