The Dashavatara Temple is an early 6th century Vishnu Hindu temple located at Deogarh, Uttar Pradesh which is 125 kilometers from Jhansi, in the Betwa River valley in northern-central India. It has a simple, one cell square plan and is one of the earliest Hindu stone temples still surviving today.Built in the Gupta Period, the Dashavatara Temple at Deogarh shows the ornate Gupta style architecture. The temple at Deogarh is dedicated to Vishnu but includes in its small footprint images of various gods and goddesses such as Shiva, Parvati, Kartikeya, Brahma, Indra, River goddesses Ganga and Yamuna, as well as a panel showing the five Pandavas of the Hindu epic Mahabharata. The Temple was built out of stone and masonry brick.[8] Legends associated with Vishnu are sculpted in the interior and exterior walls of the temple. Also carved are secular scenes and amorous couples in various stages of courtship and intimacy.According to Alexander Lubotsky, this temple was built according to the third khanda of the Hindu text Vishnudharmottara Purana, which describes the design and architecture of the Sarvatobhadra-style temple, thus providing a floruit for the text and likely temple tradition that existed in ancient India.[9] Though ruined, the temple is preserved in a good enough condition to be a key temple in the Hindu temple architecture scholarship, particularly the roots of the North Indian style of temple design. The Dashavatara temple is locally known as Sagar marh, which literally means the temple on the tank, a name it gets from the square water pool cut into the rock in front.

Its a very beautiful and very old temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu .It is in Devgarh village of Lalitpur district of UP .Its about 32 km away from Lalitpur Railway station and about 12 km from Jakhlon railway station .Lalitpur is a main railhead where express trains stops but at Jakhlon only local passenger trains stops . To reach Devgarh no bus are plying and so you have to wait for an auto tempo or have to hired an auto in Rs 200-250 as you have to go to in a remote place . This temple is under ASI and Rs 25 is charged as fee . But I am sure you will find it worthy to visit here .

The Dashavatara temple is locally known as Sagar marh, which literally means the temple on the tank, a name it gets from the square water pool cut into the rock in front. The Dashavatara Tfcmple is an early 6th century Vishnu Hindu temple located at Deogarh, Uttar Pradesh in the Betwa River valley in north-central India. It has a simple, one cell square plan and is one of the earliest Hindu stone temples still surviving today,Built in the Gupta Period, the Dashavatara Temple at Deogarh shows the ornate Gupta style architecture. The temple at Deogarh is dedicated to Vishnu, but includes in its small footprint images of Shiva, Parvati, Kartikeya, Brahma, Indra, River goddesses Ganga and Yamuna, as well as a panel showing the five Pandavas of the Hindu epic Mahabharata. The Temple was built out of stone and masonry brick.Legends associated with Vishnu are sculpted in the interior and exterior walls of the temple. The temple provides steps in the center of all sides of the platform to let the pilgrim enter the temple from all four direction. The temple faces west, with slight deviation to the south that enables the setting suns rays to fall on the main idol in the temple. The plinth is square with a 55.5 feet (16.9 m) side, about 9 feet (2.7 m) above the bottom step (called the moon stone) of the shrine. Each corner of the platform has a 11 feet (3.4 m) square projection with remnants of a shrine. The plinth was molded in four parallel courses, each molding about 0.95 feet (0.29 m) thick. Above the four moldings, rectangular panels separated by pilasters ran all along the plinth with friezes narrating Hindu texts such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Some of these friezes are now in museums such as the National Museum in Delhi. These show, for example, the narratives from the Krishna legend. The Dashavatara temple is generally dated between late 5th-century and early 6th-century, or about 500 CE.Benjamin Preciado-Solis, a professor of Indian History specializing in Hindu and Buddhist iconography, dates it to the 5th-century.According to Geoige Michell, an art historian and a professor specializing in Hindu Architecture, it is unclear when exactly the Dashavatara temple was built but its style suggests the sixth century.Michael Meister, another art historian and professor of Indiantemple architecture, dates the temple to between 500-525 C

RELATED RESEARCH TOPICS1. दशावतार – Dashavatara refers to the ten avatars of Vishnu, the Hindu god of preservation. Vishnu is said to descend in form of an avatar to restore cosmic order, the list of Dashavatara varies across sects and regions. The standard list is as follows, Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, sometimes, Krishna replaces Vishnu as the source of all avatars and Balarama takes Krishnas place in the list. In other versions, Krishna may be dropped from the list and substituted by regional deities like Vithoba, the order of the Dashavataras has been interpreted to be reflective of Darwinian evolution. The word Dashavatara derives from daśa, meaning ten and avatar, God Vishnu incarnates on Earth from time to time to eradicate evil forces, to restore the dharma and to liberate the worthy ones or devotees from the cycle of births and deaths. A similar thread appears in Buddhism, the Pāli Canon refers to 28 Buddhas, while the Mahayana tradition additionally has many Buddhas of celestial origin, for example Amitābha and Vairocana. The time till completion for Kali Yuga is in 427,000 years, at that time, the Supreme Personality of Godhead will appear on the earth. Acting with the power of pure spiritual goodness, He will rescue eternal religion, Matsya, the fish, from the Satya Yuga. Vishnu takes the form of a fish to save Manu from the deluge, after which he takes his boat to the new world along with one of every species of plant and animal, Kurma, the tortoise, from the Satya Yuga. Varaha, the boar, from the Satya Yuga and he appeared to defeat Hiranyaksha, a demon who had taken the Earth, or Prithvi, and carried it to the bottom of what is described as the cosmic ocean in the story. The battle between Varaha and Hiranyaksha is believed to have lasted for a thousand years, which the former finally won, Varaha carried the Earth out of the ocean between his tusks and restored it to its place in the universe. Narasimha, the half-man/half-lion, from the Satya Yuga, Vishnu descended as an anthropomorphic incarnation, with the body of a man and head and claws of a lion. He then disembowels the rakshasa at the threshold of his house, at dusk, with his claws. Vamana, a dwarf, from the Treta Yuga, the fourth descendant of Hiranyakashyap, Bali, with devotion and penance was able to defeat Indra, the god of firmament. This humbled the other deities and extended his authority over the three worlds, the gods appealed to Vishnu for protection and he descended as a boy Vamana. During a yajna of the king, Vamana approached him and Bali promised him for whatever he asked, Vamana asked for three paces of land. Bali agreed, and the dwarf then changed his size to that of a giant and he stepped over heaven in his first stride, and the netherworld with the second. Bali realized that Vamana was Vishnu incarnate, in deference, the king offered his head as the third place for Vamana to place his foot

The Dashavtar temple has been constructed by huge carved stone blocks. This temple is of medium height, square in shape and west facing. Earlier there was a columned orbit around the temple but now only four columns are in existance. The peak of the temple is destroyed. Its entrance is inscribed with multiplicity and the incarnations of Vishnu on the three sides of the temple have been exhibited. On the south there are five Pandavas, including Anantshai Vishnu, Draupadi along with Lakshmi and Brahma, Shiva, Indra and other gods on the vehicles. To the north Nar-Narayana and the Gajendra Moksha have been carved. This temple is very important in terms of architecture. Some scenes of Ramayana Leela related to this temple are kept in National Museum Delhi. The construction period of this temple is considered to be the sixth century.
