Named after Shaukat Rai Malhotra, who initiated the cooperative in August 1979. Malhotra was also one of the contractors for Som Vihar, the army officers apartment complex in South Delhi. SRM CGHS was registered on 6 December, 1979 with office at 78 Janpath. Land was first allotted at Kondli, on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border, off Mayur Vihar but at the insistence of the members, the present location was given in December 1984. The first set of people moved in here, after draw of lots, in the latter half of 1999. The society had famous members like the actor Juhi Chawla and Jamila Verghese, wife of editor (the late) B G Verghese. There are 90 flats in all.
